- A duke's daughter disguises herself as a boy to get the attention of one of her father's attendants whom she likes. But then she's stuck being a boy in order to stay close to the attendant. A public domain Shakespearean comedy adapted by J.M. Barrie and Robert Cullen.
I loved the performance of Rosalind. In many scenes she carries the entire scene on her arms. Her performance is exceptional.
This wonderful film makes studying Shakespeare a real pleasure. Wasn't Rosalind marvellous! Why cannot more of Shakespeare's plays be as brilliant as this. The sound etc was outstanding but the sub-titles were really appreciated. Just think, this film was made 80 years' ago...the year of my birth. Thank you so much for this. I am enjoying it so much and have book-marked and will watch, and watch and watch.
The performances of Elisabeth Bergner and Laurence Oliver were outstanding! Truly an enjoyable to watch - especially since this movie was filmed in 1936!
One of my favorite versions!... the first I'd ever seen! THANK YOU for sharing!
I wish i would b there and perform this act. i m still reading this story in my class 09th....
Hats off 2 sir william shakesphere.....!!
i never thought that study could be made so simple and can be explained in just about 1 and half hour
The monologue, Seven Ages of Man, which starts at 43:00, is the best I have ever found on the Internet. In fact, all other versions are too short, too strong, or too boring!
Great work.. every sentence is loaded.. learned a lot, Thank you!!
Evergreen play which we can watch again n again.
I enjoyed watching this this video, thank you for sharing. I think watching plays and novels before reading them will be helpful for critical thinkers and critics, it gives deep analysis and clear ideas to put in consideration.
For some reason this feels like an Xmass seasonal movie I could happily watch each December.
this is our spring play for community theatre, so watching this helped me understand it better; thank you!
The look on Orlando's face at the end is priceless.
Orlando is indeed beautiful :-)
Thank you U.S department of education for funding and captioning this movie.
I find it really hard to hear and make out old english. At least reading it helps out a lot along with watching it in understanding its meaning. Thanks again!
Great experience to watch this movie.
Rosalind....wonderful dialogue delivery.
How wonderful ~ for me Olivier is simply the greatest - knew he played the part but no idea it existed on film ~ what a fantastic historical record !! Magic

Henry Ainley who played as Exiled Duke is the father of Anthony Ainley. He is best known as The Master from Doctor Who!
In Shakespeare's days 'hour' was pronounced as 'or' which is very similar to 'whore'; and therefore, in order for the audience to get the fool's pun the actor must pronounce that part as: 'from or to or we ripe and ripe.. and from or to or we rot and rot.'
Wow!
Such a nice vid. Even helped me alot.
Thanks for providing & keep it up!
Farewell good Sir
The captions on this film follow the DCMP Captioning Key for Educational Media. The presentation rate limit for high school theatrical productions, like this one, is 150-160 words per minute. Additionally, no captions should appear on screen for less than two seconds. Verbatim captioning is preferable, but not always possible. Any presentation rate edits maintain the original meaning, content, and essential vocabulary.
Scintillating! I am overwhelmed.
Thanks for sharing!
I'm liking this version so far! Nice to finally have a good-looking Orlando. :^) Although it's a little distracting to have Rosalind with a French accent. I suppose that's correct since it's supposed to take place in France but since only she and one other dude so far have an accent it makes them seem a little out of place.
What a great ending ! Nice
I love this movie.
I expected Orlano as a heavy man but its a very good presentataion it will help for 10th class ICSE exams.
The movie is hit, you know!😉👍👍
Great job
This was partly adapted by the guy who wrote Peter Pan!!??

Delightful Rosalind a fluid performance upon which any stick would float.
They've skipped some dialogues... but good overall :)

I remember my Calculus professor a year ago telling me how he thought Shakespeare was boring.
"Yeah, I tried to listen to a Shakespears play once. We were watching the play 'As You Like It'....I did not!"
