Randomly came upon this video while looking up some pronunciation hints for a completely different language and now I'm sitting here at 4 am, studying how my tongue moves while doing "rrrr" noises. It's a fascinating thing, just like watching someone trying to explain it to English speakers is. And the best part? I have no trouble with rolling Rs, since my native language has them as well :D
Here I am, me at 24, a guy who's first tongue is Spanish finally realizing how to make the (soft) R sound thanks to some very clear examples in English.
I swear once I learn this I'm going to end up just non stop trilling for a month through excitement and lose all my friends haha. For not tho it's making silly noises whilst I try to trill and fail constiantly! Lol Ty for the video
Haha I can actually Trill now but I am still no expert! Can only do it now when I don’t think about it or try to actively Trill :) It it possible though so keep at it!
Surprised I have another response from this as I posted my comment a year ago. If it helps it was definitely a combination of both when I was learning to trill. Videos helped me a lot but I think as long as you want to do it and practise enough you will eventually be able to do - trill. For me personally I remember I managed to pull it off once, then managed a few times and just persevered until I was able to do it. Again though if I really think about how to Trill i can totally muck it up. It’s very much a natural sound with not much effort on what your doing with trying to make the sound. If that Makes sence? Lol Keep practising and failing a LOT would be my advice tho,
(I’m American) It clicked for me more when I realized, that you have to open your mouth much more than when you’re speaking English. We keep our mouths very closed bc we use our tongue so much, but once I opened my mouth wider the tongue could move more (like almost smiling), and it started working (better airflow)!! Now I just need to practice!! Thank you!!!

Thank you for being the first one on You Tube to adequately explain how to create the trilled R sound. Your advice to make the TH sound and pull the tongue back worked like a charm. Muchas gracias!
Thank you, now I can finally pronounce the R right! It’s actually much easier to do than I thought. I’m German and have always pronounced my R like the French do, since the German and French R are quite similar.🙏🏻
That's the standard dialect, standard high German, but there are dialects that pronounce it with the rolled R, specially in the North, low German, North Frisia, the Saxon dialects
I'm from Finland so the hard 'r' doesn't pose any difficulties for me since in the Finnish language that's the only 'r' sound we have, but the soft 'r' definitely doesn't roll off my tongue quite as easily...
As a latino, I knew this but didn't know I knew this. I would try to help my friends who were taking Spanish class but was terrible at it. So they mostly came to me to learn curse words instead.
Thank you so much ! I've always been able to make the trilled R sound in isolation, but have always struggled to use it in words or sentences because I couldn't make it flow with other letter sounds. This video has made me realise that I've been making the sound with my tongue in the wrong position; I've been doing it with my tongue pulled way back into the middle of my mouth, nowhere near my teeth. Which meant moving my tongue quite a lot when transitiong from R to any other sound, which is why I've been unable to make it flow. Now I know what I need to work on. Thanks again.
OMG!!! I’m a Chinese speaker and I watch tons of videos on UA-cam to learn the strong “R” sound. And your video make me pronounce the sounds in 1 hour, even it’s still not perfect, but at least it works!!! OMG !!! Thank you so much
I'm a German and my r sounds so horrible when speaking Spanish which frustrates me a lot. I've been trying for long to understand how you do it and your video has helped me to finally understand how it works. Thank you so much!

I am learning this for Welsh-and also because I have never been able to do it and I would really like to (I am 65!😂) From other videos, I can just about do it, but not long and hard like you can. This technique has helped give me more consistency, I feel, and I guess now it is practice, practice, practice (like the passer by told the woman in New York when she asked the way to Carnegie Hall)!
Thank you Milena! you video was very informative! and learned to really get some good vibrations going on with my tongue Its very hard! but i will fore sure keep practicing this! you're a good teacher!
Thank you! My tongue trills all over the place, but I could never locate where it should be so I could continue the word at the same time. This really helped!
Yeah thats the problem with saying "Say it like the P in apple", cause every country says it a bit different. Irish dont do a dental fricitive for th for example, but would make a strong T sound in bottle and not a dd sound. However she does explain in a way an american english speaker could understand. For UK/Irish people it would probably be better to diagram it, as they are exposed to the French thrill, the spannish one, italian and even germany and often they cant tell the difference. French and german ones made at back of throat. Also some accents in English actually thrill the R already, some northern/scottish accents etc, also all the english accent villains in star wars roll their r.

Can you help if I can do the sound but not sustain it? I can say certain words perfectly like perro but no others (like reto is hit and miss). I can't sustain the rr for more than about a second.
I am finding the "R" con "R" tongue twister helpful. I find if I go to 6:37 and play it with my eyes closed, stop the video and repeat it, then play the next one with my eyes closed, and then repeat it, I eventually start rolling my "R's". Could you possible create a video with about twenty repeats of you doing the "R" con "R" tongue twister with space in between each one so we can practice it easily without having to stop and restart?
This a good video. As good as the instructions themselves are, it's also a huge help to learn that this requires practice and isn't something that comes right away. My question is: Is it normal for a beginner to get a kind of airy sound? I'm getting okay tongue vibration (if I force a little more air out than I normally do when talking), but I also get the sort of "leaky air hose" sort of sound with it. It kind of sounds more like a rolling "th" than a rolling "r".
Yes, it is totally normal and that is a great indicator that you are getting closer to the fully rolled "r" . You can also try to pull the tongue in a tiny little bit . This can help with the airy sound.
Having trouble with this “rr” sound but I’ll keep practicing....... prettiest Spanish teacher on UA-cam I think. Think I found my teacher.....z how can I not want to watch? 😍

@ Easy Spanish with Milena - I just subscribed! How do you pronounce the Spanish name Rosaura? Google translate audio sounds funny or not quite right. I am English speaking and just starting to learn Spanish Thank you much! 👍😊
I would like to learn how to make the high pitched longer trill that is used in the song "The lion sleeps tonight" I can roll the short rrr's soft and hard. I really want to learn how to trill a longer rrrrrrrrrr sound, like a high pitched bird call. Would you teach me please?
Milena, how do you say the "r" sound at the end of a word WITHOUT making it roll? That's what I'm having trouble with, like in "azucar". Any tips for that?
Do not worry. Isn't a problem. You can pronounce the single R in all situation, the context will help you to be understood. For example, if you say: "Voy manejando el caro", only an idiot would think tha you´re speaking about some expensive thing. Relax, the R and Rrrr is not important as many think. In countris such Bolivia, Ecuador and Perú, the hard R is not used.
Was trying to do this, but decided to practice just my "r" in spanish first. So I said "caro, caro, caro" and my friend who speaks spanish said "One of those times you said carro" and apparently it was just the one time and i didn't hear, i don't know what i did, and i can't replicate it. Funny that I did it when trying to say "caro" though. I somehow am always communicating the wrong thing in spanish hahahaha But hey, I'm getting closer maybe!
Regarding the “r” sound, comparing that to the “tt” in “bottle”, I always understood the “tt” in “bottle” as the English “d” sound. Compare “body” and “bottle” (or “lid” and “little”, etc.). On this interpretation, am I to understand the “r” sound as the English “d” sound? I’m having trouble saying “preparación”. Replacing the “r” with “d”, we get “pdepadación”, and that “pd” sound is troubling for me. Am I wrong to pronounce “preparación” like “pdepadación”? If so, I must be wrong that the “tt” in “bottle” is the same as the “d” in “body”, or else the “r” sound in Spanish must be a little different than the “tt” sound in English. Thanks for any help anyone has to offer.
I think what she meant by the "tt" is more of a "hard" L sound. You know how L is softly moving up on your palate and resting; the soft R would be a "pointy-er L". Point the tip of your tongue on the end of your palate, where it meets your teeth (the tip of your tongue should be a little concave) and whip it outwards. It should make the soft R sound... if my explanation was clear enough lol
@@purrgundy Thank you. Yes, over the weeks I think I've gotten a little better with this pronunciation, and my understanding is in line with what you are describing.
the American way of pronouncing bottle is more like "boddle". Being English this is how i pronounce bottle in the US, otherwise i get a strange look, lol.

Funny that I did it when trying to say "caro" though. I somehow am always communicating the wrong thing in spanish hahahaha
But hey, I'm getting closer maybe!
Thank you so much... while I was watching this I started doing perfect rolled r’s for the first time of 200 hours of practicing Spanish... :0
I was born with a bilateral cleft palate and I have really hard time doing this. Is there any alternative ways to do this?
Question what do you say to get the rr sound do you say thhh I don't get it
i sometimes had trouble pronouncing my hard R's at times and other's i was fine, but now i realized it was the position of my tongue! thank you soo soo soo soo soo much!
