    02:00 Clicking while coasting AND pedaling
    02:26 Rubbing noise
    04:04 Creaking sounds: seatpost/saddle/pedals/cleats/bottom bracket
    Half the battle in eliminating bike clicks, bike clunks, bike creaking and rubbing is finding out where it's coming from. It takes time and patience and I usually suggest starting with some of the easier repairs first. If that doesn't solve it, move on to another component. We'll link to our playlist on bike noise at the end of the video. Lets continue our observations.
    1. Clicking or clunking while coasting but NOT while pedaling
    The only thing turning while coasting but not while pedaling in your freehub The freehub is made up of pawls that engage the spines of the freehub as you pedal. But when coasting, the pawls are pushed down to allow the wheel to turn independent of the pedal and chain movement (i.e. coasting). Clucking or clicking when coasting but not pedaling may indicate that dirt or grime is preventing the pawls from being pushed down when coasting or there may be internal damage to the freehub. We suggest taking your bike to your local bike mechanic to overhaul the freehub and eliminate the noise.
    2. Clicking while pedaling: See our video in the upper right. Also consider problems with pedal bearings. And check your cleats for wear, especially Look style cleats.
    3. Clicking while coasting AND pedaling
    a. Look for embedded particles in your tires such as glass or small stones which will click against the road pavement
    b. Also check the bikes brake pads for embedded particles which may intermittent be clicking against the wheel rim
    c. If you have a magnetic sensor attached to a spoke, check it is not hitting the odometer pickup
    d. Make sure the wheel quick release is closed and tight
    e. A loose spoke may sometimes give a pinging sound as the wheel rotates
    4. Rubbing sound as the wheel rotates coasting AND pedaling
    a. Check that the wheel is properly installed and centered between the brake pads. The rim brakes themselves may need to be centered (CARD)
    b. Carefully look over the tire for defects that may be causing the tire to bulge and hit the brake pad as the wheel rotates. If so, replace the tire immediately or you may have a sudden blow out and flat.
    c. If you have disc brake noise, make sure the disc is not bent and is centered between the brake pads. If the disc is aligned properly between the pads but you still here an intermittent rubbing sound, clean the disc with some rubbing alcohol to remove any grit or grime that may be the culprit.
    5. Creaking
    a. Creaking seatpost: Remove and clean to seatpost and seatpost clamp. Clean and apply Fiber Grip (prevents slippage even if you're not dealing with carbon fiber).
    b. Creaking saddle: Remove and clean. Apply grease or Fiber Grip to the saddle rails. Make sure the saddle clamp is tight (torque to specs, don't over tighten or the bolt(s) may break while cycling.
    c. Check the pedal are tight. You can also remove the pedals, grease the pedal spindles and re-tighten the pedals.
    d. Worn pedal, worn cleats or old bicycle shoes can creak (the latter due to some flex that occurs in the hard shoe sole over time).
    e. Finally, you may need to overhaul your bike's bottom bracket. GCN has an excellent review on how to do this. The link is in the upper right. It may involve just removing, cleaning, and re-greasing the bottom bracket. But some bikes, even fairly new will have a creaking bottom bracket. Using plumbers' tape, anti-seize, or other methods will decrease BB movement, flex and noise.
    Remember that all bike noise can represent a mechanical problem and should be investigated. Much can be prevented by good maintenance of components and replacement of worn parts.

    Your videos are always very useful and thorough. I’m in month 4 of trying to diagnose a clunking/creaking sound. To date, I’ve replace the pressfit BB (via LBS), regreased the carbon seatpost (fiber grease) and the QRs (fiber grease) and cleaned, regreased the hubs. The noise doesn’t tend to show up until 20-30 miles into a ride most rides but once it occurs it is steady throughout the ride. Never occurs when coasting, only when pedaling and more when pushing (quad) than pulling (hamstring). I can take my shoes out of the clips and it will still occur with pressure. The noise occurs multiple times (2-3) in a revolution and always sounds like it is coming from the rear (although I realize noise can be difficult to pinpoint on carbon frames). The noise tends to sound more like a clank or clunk than a creak or ping. I’ve changed the rear wheel out with another and it stopped. I can also dismount, hold the rear brake (rim brake) on and put hand pressure on the crank and the exact creak occurs once at the engagement point. Wheels are Vision Metron 40s, groupset is SRAM. Noise can occur in both large and small chainring and seems somewhat worse in the easier (larger) gears than the harder (smaller) gears.

    I had a noise that only clicked 2 times per complete full cycle, on riding uphill or first few cranks starting out from a complete stop; HARD to find on the stand with no stress!
    I just bought for my brother, a practically new bike from someone that never found time to ride it. I knew it was not a tired bottom bracket or anything serious of course; I found it was a loose nut on the back wheel; looks like it never got assembled right; there's only 300 miles on this bike, and it has a loose wheel nut? Not tightened to spec from the bike shop or factory. It was only on the left side away from the gears; was quite loose, without much play in it however; but not even finger tight.. 3/4 inch nut, or mm equiv.
    The loud click was from the loose nut and the lock washer caught between nut and main washer. Wheel did not come off when riding; but I'm amazed original owner did not see that, before selling it to me. It made all the difference to fix one thing at a time; test ride it, and I could tell instantly I had my culprit!
    Had to re-align the back caliper too; glad I just purchased a rotor alignment shoe that fits over the rotor when adjusting; worked like a charm; I find them difficult to adjust properly otherwise. It was definitely out of alignment once the wheel was on tight; it would not spin for long when on a stand, without realignment, and when I loosened the caliper, took it out of the equation; all was well... nice to have a bike stand, can't recommend it enough; if you like bikes, get a stand.

    Thanks for the tips, I love watching your videos! I have an interesting problem in that I hear a clicking from the bottom bracket area, but only when the chain is on the largest chainring gear, and only when I pedal hard with my left foot. It doesn't matter whether I'm sat or stood, but when I push down hard on the left pedal with my left foot I hear the click. I don't hear anything when pushing hard on the right foot. I'm starting to think the pressure of me pushing down is causing the pedals to pivot slightly which is causing the right pedal to catch on something - but I can't see any evidence of scrapes or catches. I'm kinda stuck!

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 роки тому

      Before you take apart the bottom bracket:
      1. Check for wear on your shoe cleat or surface of the pedal.
      2. Check the pedal - see:
      ua-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      3. Could also be the bearings in the left pedal. You'd need to borrow a pedal to try a different one out.
      4. Finally, you can overhaul the bottom bracket. This is something your bike shop can do for you (although I still feel it has something to do with the pedal).
      Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

    I experience creaking sound and unable to locate the source.. it is coming either from the bottom bracket.. but it creaking only comes after i have done like 2 miles and the sound intensifies post that.. it still comes when i am not pedaling which makes me wonder if it from the bottom bracket or from the front wheel

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 роки тому

      Creaking or noise when pedaling and coasting suggest 2 possibilities. The only things turning when coasting are the wheels and freehub (not the bottom bracket).
      1. Wheel bearings: The bearings and/or cones of one or both wheels may be worn and may need replacement.
      2. The freehub may need service or may be broken.
      Your local bike shop can help you with these.
      One more note: Be sure it's not the saddle or seat post. Easy to check - does the creaking stop if you stand while on an uphill. And be sure it's not the handlebars. Does the creaking become less if you let up your hold on the handlebars?
      Let me have some feedback since both our viewers and I learn through the feedback. Regards and safe cycling, Tony

    On each crank (360) of front while peddling, the rear spocket is very slightly delayed, causing a sound in the back. You can feel a clunk on each revolution of your peddles when the rear sprocket catches up to the forward peddling. The rear wheel doesnt wobble just delay then sound when it catches up.

      The parts that that could be a fault are known as the pawls and the ratchet inside the freehub. Slipping can happen for a number of reasons, including worn ratchet, worn pawls, weak springs, or excessive accumulation of grease & grime within the freehub.
      Depending on the hub you have, a repair consists of either cleaning, rebuilding or replacing the freehub. Some freehubs are rebuildable, others are not and must be replaced as a unit. That said, it's often possible to extend the life of a non-rebuildable freehub by flushing out the old grease & gunk and regreasing.
      The mechanic at your local bike shop can almost certainly take care of this for you. If you're more of the do-it-yourself type, www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/freehub-service has step-by-step instructions for several different freehub types.
      This video may be of interest to you in explaining how a freehub works:

    Tony, I have a squawker! It's a titanium road bicycle which creaks and squawks while pedaling, and originally the noises would begin a few miles into a ride and be almost incessant the rest of the way. It is not present when coasting, but the noise will happen when standing. The shop swapped the bottom bracket (threaded external bearing type) but that didn't cure the noise. Now for the mysterious part: after washing the bicycle, it was quiet for several weeks of riding but the creak has returned. It is now present as soon as the ride begins, and is heard with even very light pedal efforts. A subsequent bike wash had no effect.
    Other info: Chainring bolts, pedals, cassette, rear d/r hanger, both q/rs are tight. Noise is present in any chainring/cog combo. Different shoes have no effect. No frame cracks are visible. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated! It's loud and it's embarrassing.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for all the info. I've been thinking about your problem all day when out cycling. I really think it's the bottom bracket. On some bikes there is some give between the threads of the bottom bracket and the threads of the frame. This occurred on one of my older steel bikes with a threaded bottom bracket. What I did was to apply some plumbers tape (Teflon tape) around the threads of the bottom bracket and then tightened the bottom bracket cups tightly. That got rid of the noise.

That resulted in a quiet ride, but I won't call it a success just yet. What put me off from doing this earlier was how it creaked even if I stood while pedaling. Sneaky devils, these creaks!

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 роки тому +1

      My guess is that it's coming from the suspension stem "bottoming out" when you ride over a grade or road dip. I'm not sure how to adjust the stem which are relatively new to cycling. Some have "elastomers" of various types to absorb more shock. Others, you can set the "preload." I don't have experience with the rock shock suspension stem so you'll need to check with your local bike shop. Let me know how you make out so we all can learn. Thanks, Tony

    Hey Tony, great videos! I have a mountain bike (Specialized Hardrock). It has a thunking sound at every pedal revolution. I was convinced it was a centre mounted kickstand hitting the pedal. The kickstand came off and I still hear the noise. When I spin move the pedals with the tires off the ground I can't hear anything. It seems to only be when weight is applied. Any ideas? It has a sound like a kickstand hitting metal pedals.

      A clunking under load may have several causes. I'll list them in order of probability:
      Bottom bracket is the most common. See: ua-cam.com/video/InW64uutftM/v-deo.html
      Less likely but possible is a loose headset. More likely to be intermittent and more pronounced when climbing. See: ua-cam.com/video/N0Zagtnyhys/v-deo.html
      Finally pedal problems (including loose bearings), less likely to produce clunking sounds. See:ua-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/v-deo.html
      Also make sure the wheel are inserted properly. My bet is the bottom bracket. You may want to have your local bike shop take a look. There are many different types of bottom brackets, some requiring special tools. Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

I have a question tho, there is this sound coming from the front of my bike that I can't quite identify, it happens when I ride my bike, while pedaling and while coasting, but if I turn the wheels while I am off the bike it makes no sound, so I assume it has something to do with the weight of my body being on it.

      What kind of noise: creaking, clicking, rubbing, pinging or thud like sound? Is it worse when pulling on the handle bars going up hill and less when you ease up on the handlebars on the flats? Thanks for you awsome video. I've a problem of some random ping sound every time i ride when bike. It only happens when i pedals and it only happens once in a while (2-3 times over a 2 hour ride). Its very loud that my friends riding with me can hear it clearly. I am on the heavy side at 110kg. I changed bike from between aluminum bike to a carbon one from Merida and Giant both are within 3 months old bike. I tried replacing pedal already but the sound still occurs. Do you think you can give me some pointer?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 роки тому

      Check your spokes for tightness by plucking them like a guitar. A very low sound indicates a loose spoke which can cause pinging, especially under tension when you pedal hard. See: forum.bikeradar.com/discussion/13068835/quot-pinging-quot-rear-spokes
      The other problem to consider are the bottom bracket bearings with inferior sealing, especially under load. Finally, some carbon fiber bikes have some flex causing occasional noise (but not usually a pinging sound). If it's not the spokes, I'd return to the dealer to check out the bottom bracket as well as the wheels themselves. I wish I can be of more help but it's hard to solve intermittent noise problems, especially over the internet.

      ua-cam.com/video/FzyRCcjRuu0/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/g5uqTNmikro/v-deo.html
      Several other possibilities:

      Freehub: See: ua-cam.com/video/TMWmnv6o9Zc/v-deo.html

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  2 роки тому

      Clicking (not creaking or knocking) while pedaling AND coasting indicates something to do with the turning of the wheels as opposed to the handlebars, seat of bottom bracket. You may or may not hear the clicking on a bike stand where the bike is not under the added weight of the rider. Here are some keys to look for starting with the easiest:
      1. Check that an odometer magnet is not hitting the pickup on the fork.
      2. Remove each wheel and lightly grease the quick release skewers. Replace the wheels and tighten the skewers making sure the wheel is properly aligned.
      3. Pluck the spokes looking for a loose spoke.
      4. Finally, the clicking may be coming from worn bearings in one of the wheels or from the freehub. If you have another set of wheels, you can narrow it down to the wheels or freehub. Investigation and overhaul of these items are best suited for your local bike shop.
      Let me know how things work out so we too can learn by your experience. Regards, Tony

    I have a problem of feeling a clunk in my pedal stroke every few revolutions. I've replaced the bottom bracket and its exactly the same. When I put the bike on the stand and use my hand to turn the crank as hard as I can, it all appears ok and no clunk can be felt. As soon as I ride, the clunk can be felt through the pedal stroke again. Strangely, I've noticed it under average load on the flat, but under heavy load or stood up climbing, it disappears. Any advice would be appreciated because it's driving me insane. thanks

    The most common cause of clicking on my bike is from the wheel magnet hitting the odometer pickup on my fork. How can I keep the pickup from moving?

    • @tony10speed

      The pickup is usually held on by zip ties. Take a piece of electrical tape and place it vertically on the inside of the fork across the zip ties and press firmly in place. You won't see it on the inside of the fork, it will not interfere with the pickup and will hold that pickup in place for many months if not a year. Regards, Tony

    My bike has a weird clunk only when I start pedaling. it happens once or twice and then goes away, even when I am pedaling hard on slopes it doesn't happen. it's only when I start, I thought it was the chain but now that you mention the pedal it could be that the pedal is losened and resting in oneñpositio and when I start moving it it moves to another position and doesn't come back until I stop pedaling hard again.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  Рік тому

      This is a tough one to answer. Some things to consider:
      1. Your pedaling action: Could it be that when you start up your in a relatively low gear and the clunk is occurring as you first bring you foot up and over the 12 o'clock position? This has occasionally happened to me as I fatigue, am in a relatively low gear, and I notice some foot hesitating as I bring it up and around when I pedal.
      2. Wheel freehub problem: Some freehubs may clunk as they first engage the splines in the hub due to dirt or lack of grease. As you get going, things quiet down.
      Listen to the clunking an try to get an idea of where it's coming from. See if you can reproduce the sound if you stop pedaling and coast, then start pedaling again. There's no easy answer here. If it's the freehub, you'll eventually hear sounds at other times. Keep me up to date as you explore this problem so we can all learn. Regards, Tony

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  8 місяців тому

      If the noise only occurs when pedaling but not cycling, it would indicate a drivetrain issue. These include worn pedals/cleats, worn chain/cassette or chainring, or bottom bracket problem. Bike noise can be hard to locate since noise can travel along the frame to appear to come from other parts of the bike (not necessarily from the front wheel). Tackle the easy thing first. Check the cleats and pedals for wear.
      Visually check your cleats and pedals for wear and replace if needed.
      Check the chain for wear as well as the cassette and chainrings:
      ua-cam.com/video/FzyRCcjRuu0/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/g5uqTNmikro/v-deo.html
      Re-grease the pedals:
      ua-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/v-deo.html
      Finally, check the bottom bracket:
      ua-cam.com/video/InW64uutftM/v-deo.html
      The chirping noise sounds usually are related to a worn chain but it also could be a bottom bracket issue. If the above doesn't help, have your local bike store take a look and consider having the bottom bracket overhauled.
      Let me know how you make out and if any of the above videos help. Regards, Tony

    Hi i have a squeaky noise while I am pedalling and coasting. It is coming from my back tire

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 роки тому

      The only things turning when coasting (and pedaling) are your rear wheel and freehub.
      1. If you have a squeak or squeal that occurs while you are pedaling or coasting, it is usually a caliper alignment issue or a bent rotor that is causing your brake pads to rub as you ride. Pick up the back of the bike and spin the back wheel. If the wheel does not spin freely and comes to a stop, you have a brake rub issue! Even if the wheel doesn't stop, try removing the wheel and reinstalling. As you spin the back wheel, make sure it does not rub the brake pads or the disc rotor is centered and not rubbing against the disc pads. If it does, the wheel may be out of alignment, the rim brakes may need to be adjusted, the disc rotor may be bent or need to be re-centered between the disc brake pads.
      2. Place a light coat of grease on the rear wheel skewer and re-insert the skewer. Take a ride.
      3. The grease in the rear wheel bearings may have "dried up" or been washed out and the hub may need to be overhauled.
      4. Finally, but less likely, the freehub may need to be overhauled and greased.
      The last two problems may require the help of your local bike shop. Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

      There are a number of different types of suspension shock absorbers. Less expensive ones work of springs and air compression and others have an oil lubricant. Here are some references (that may or may not apply to your type of fork):

      You can consult the internet for your specific fork to see what the manufacturer suggests in terms of cleaning and lubrication. Or you can take it down to your local bike store. I wish I can be more specific, but the variation in suspension forks is so great it precludes a precise solution without actually seeing the fork itself.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 роки тому

      Finding the source to the noise can be a challenge in that the sound is not always what you think. Listen carefully to your bike. Start with some of the easier things first.
      1. Make sure the back wheel is installed properly and there is no wobble in the cassette. See:
      ua-cam.com/video/XdShMsbFNPg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      3.Check for wear on your shoe cleat or surface of the pedal.
      4. Check the pedal - see:
      ua-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      5. Could also be the bearings in the pedal. You'd need to borrow a pedal to try a different one out.
      4. Then consider the bottom bracket. See:
      ua-cam.com/video/InW64uutftM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      It is possible that the bottom bracket needs to be overhauled. This is something your bike shop can help. Finally you can consider the freehub although this is not a typical freehub presentation.

      Or the bottom bracket. See:

      Try your best to pin point the sound. Is the noise directly under you (pedal or bottom bracket), from the rear (pulley wheels or derailleur), from the front (brakes, headset, bar clamp)? This is not an easy job but should be tried before any repairs.
      Check your bike shoe cleats for wear. Worn cleats can make odd sounds.
      Is the noise from the pedals or bottom bracket area or toward the rear where it may be the pulley wheels. I first try and put a drop of light lubricant on the area where the bearing meets the plastic of the pully wheel (just a very tiny bit on each side of each pulley wheel). See:

      I actually prefer the manual adjustment on mechanical disc calipers, wherein you use an allen key or small screwdriver to move the pads closer to the rotor. It means slightly more maintenance, but is much easier to avoid disc rub. Performance-wise though, I find mechanical ones to be poor.

    I'm not sure if my problem is the pedal creak but when I'm pedalling (I think this only happens when I push my feet down) I hear some sort of locking noise (when you lock your door or something, not sure how to explain) from both my pedals. They seem to physically move my feet a very tiny bit when it happens. It's concerning me as it's a brand new bike I bought today. Not sure if it's because I crashed kinda hard when I was riding it as it was my first time in like 4 years because the crash also caused the chains to move away from the middle if you know what I mean (fixed thanks to my dad). Please help me out if you get my problem, thanks!

      Could be a bent rear derailleur hanger as a result to the crash. See:

      Also check that you didn't damage the front derailleur (if your bike has one) that the chain is not rubbing on one of the derailleur plates. See:
      ua-cam.com/video/mSIK0I4TDNg/v-deo.html
      Finally, it may be the bottom bracket and you may have to return to the shop where you bought it and let them have a look.

It is a geared bike and I forgot that I was supposed to keep pedalling when shifting gears so I may give that a try to fix the problem. My dad says it may be either because it's a new, geared bike and to just give it some time to get 'soft' or simply because I sometimes may not keep an equal balance on both my feet while pedalling. • @tony10speed

      What ever is causing the noise requires more force then just seated and cycling. This is not unusual and finding the source take time and patience. First: Does this happen in both the large or small chainrings (unless the bike is a 1x, i.e., single front chainring)? Do you hear the clicking no matter which cog your in? If it's only in specific chainring or specific cogs, let me know because our approach will be different. If so (noise regardless of which chainring or which cog you're in), then start with some of the easier things first.
      1. Check your cleats and pedal surfaces for wear.
      2. Check your chainring(s) for wear. See:
      ua-cam.com/video/sXdrOQpr-Zg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      3. Next check the pedals themselves. See:
      ua-cam.com/video/xn0bokygJ9c/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      It is possible that the bearings in the pedals (if you've had these pedals for years) may be shot. Do you have another set of pedals to try or can borrow?
      4. If the above are not the problem, it's probably coming from the bottom bracket. See:
      ua-cam.com/video/InW64uutftM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      It is possible that the BB needs to be overhauled. The cups may be loose or the bearings replaced. See:

      and
      ua-cam.com/video/ow-iRD_dHs8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ozcycle

    Why would worn shoes creak?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 роки тому

      Bicycle shoes have a very firm sole to protect the metatarsal and surrounding tissues from injury. It allow spreading ot the force of the pedal across the whole underside of the foot. When they wear with the age and use of the shoe, slight flexion occurs causing creaking. It also may result in some foot pain under the metatarsal, toes or sole of the foot.
