  • The MG3 is a German-made machine gun from the early Cold War era. The MG3 is a code name for a variety of machine guns developed when Germany joined NATO. This is essentially a conversion of the MG42 machine gun, which was widely used by Nazi Germany during WWII. The MG3, along with the Belgian MAG, was the most common type of Western machine gun during the Cold War.
The MG3 is essentially a 7.62x51mm NATO conversion of the MG42. Early versions were simply conversions, but later versions include a slew of minor improvements in a variety of areas. The short recoil operation and roller locking mechanism are retained in the MG3. It is only belt fed and feeds from left to right. The square slotted forearm is open on the right side to allow for the replacement of the quick change barrel. The MG3 can be fired from a bipod, a tripod, or as a pintle-mounted or coaxial machine gun.
