I knew a chinese man who would lead flocks of girls between university buildings with a bamboo flute, I assume the Native American version works the same way.
I’ve been wanting to get a wooden flute for a while since seeing your videos! The main thing intimidating is not knowing what kind to start with, since there are so many options. I play guitar professionally (punk, blues, classical Indian 🇮🇳, folk, all with a lot of fingerstyle), so I’ve always been concerned about the keys, scales, and modes I could or couldn’t play. Starting off with pentatonic scales would definitely let me play in most scales I use, but not something like the Phrygian dominant scale.
These flutes can play most scales including Phrygian dominant excluding the flat 2nd. The biggest thing to know is that every flute comes in a certain key and only has a note range of about an octave plus a major 3 depending on the maker. I have a flute in every key mostly so I’m able to incorporate them into most of my songs. It becomes an addiction! ❤️ A great place to start is www.singingtreeflutes.com use code: “Tommy” to get a discount!
Thanks so much for the amazing video, Tommy! I’m from Germany and was wondering if you know any good vendors for Native American flutes in Europe? Thanks again!
Red Kite Flute are in the UK. I think there’s a great maker from Germany too but the name escapes me right now. I think there’s brand starts with a W? It’s been a while since I’ve looked into it.
It’s all true. I was in my seventies when I started and found a great blessing in life. They’re easy to make too…..bamboo!
I love bamboo flutes!!
Enjoyed the encouragement!
