It think masochism can be both offensive and defensive aar. Its why if you use sabertooth with km synergy his sp1 bleeds cant be shrugged. On the other hand if you parry it can't trigger either. Its weird. Other good example is proxima that ignores it on block, I'd think thats defensive aar.
That’s probably not a good comparison though, because mags and AA have blanket AAR and crossbones is defensive aar. That being said, I still do think it’s AAR, and it got shut down because the debuff was inflicted while the opponent was being hit.

Champs like AA and Magneto turn off maso. Definitely an AAR thing that failed maso from triggering.
