I couldn't agree more. It's that quintessential Paul Jackson P-bass style sound that's so central to much of the Headhunters sound but particularly on the Secrets album. Helped along by the fact that they weren't scared to turn the bass up high in the mix. Then again, who wouldn't want to turn Paul Jackson up to 11? 😄
Great playing and tone. I love this album and have been wanting to transcribe some Paul Jackson lines for ages but never got round to it. What year is your P-Bass and what strings do you use?
Thanks for listening and commenting. A great album indeed and transcribing Paul Jackson is certainly rewarding if you're into that Oakland funk vibe. The bass is 1970 and the strings are roundwound Rotosound.
For this track (and anything else by Paul Jackson) it's P-bass all the way! But I love both basses. J tends to be my no.1 for gigs. P is great for studio stuff.
Hi thanks for your question. It's really just the sound of a 1970 P-Bass. My chain is pretty simple. You've probably spotted my Mark Bass head (Little Mark Tube) which is DI'd directly into my sound card. Eq more or less flat except for little bit of extra low end. No post prod, just the natural sound of the intrument.
@@MarcelStranis that's amazing how simple it is and how gorgeous that sounds all flat! I guess it's just the magic of the natural tone of the 1970 p bass and of course all the character a tube amp adds, tubes and P Basses just go so well :) my main Rig is a PJ bass with an Ampeg B-15NF ;) How do you like your little mark tube? Also what strngs do you use?
@@hetul784 I like the Mark Bass tube well enough but I still prefer the old skool type rigs like Ampeg, SWR etc. Mark sounds overly clean and a bit dry I find. But the light weight is a big attraction, and there's no shortage of power so overall it's probably a fair compromise. Strings are rounds from Rotosound that have been on there for about 3 years as I'm an old strings kinda guy 😄 Favourite strings are DR though.
@@MarcelStranis hahaha ayyyyy I'm an Ampeg myself Frankly usually switch between an SVT and a B-15NF. I'd love to try a markbass tube sometime tho! Also I'm an old string guy too!! Haha!
@@hetul784 Slight correction, the Little Mark Tube actually sounds pretty cool through an old skool cab. It's the Mark Bass cabs that can sound a bit dry. I sometimes get to use an Ampeg 410HLF and the Mark head sounds great through that, as well as through my old SWR Goliath. Old string guys unite! 😜
Thank you! I will have a think about how to break this one down for tutorial. But there won't be anything quick about it as it involves so many variations of the same theme.
So that's the main theme sorted. Apart from the intro and the bridge, everything else is a variation of that. As I consider how best to approach this tutorial it would be helpful to know which particular segments you're looking to learn.
That, right there, is FUNK. This is music you play with your heart, not your head, not even your fingers. I'm 65, but I hear this and I'm 18. Really!
you cant go wrong with that Paul Jackson groove
you nailed it baby!! always been in love with this tune ever since I first heard it back in 76...PJ was definitely the funkiest cat back then
That's it man.Every note is nailed.
Fantastic!
Thank you sir ;)
2:56, what a groove
Paul Jackson was a genius. One of my fav with Jaco and Rocco Prestia. Well done man!!! ♥♥♥♥♥
Thanks very much!
Brilliant, you played it really well.
Thanks for listening
Nice playing! And man I love your bass! This is the sexiest P bass I've ever seen!
Thanks very much, on behalf of me AND the bass 😊
CONGRATULATIONS !
Amazing
very good, I liked it a lot, you made me want to play this bass line
Great playing 👍 same groove that Paul J👌
this is so funky
I think, particularly on Secrets, the bass is as essential to the overall sound, feel, and success of the album as the keyboards. Excellent cover!

it's also super loud in the mix! the style of the era.. loud drums and ESPECIALLY bass
That is sick! Thanks for sharing it
Great tone,well played 👍
super cool!

Prefer precision over jazz bass?

any word on the tab?
Sorry I have no tabs or score.
how did you manage to get that tone??

can you make a quick "How to play" with this one too? You're a beast! cheers
