Just heard an interview w/ Adrian Belew that Bowie gave him these lyrics as a gift and that Adrian could do whatever he wanted to do with it. Who does that? BOWIE, man!
So devestated by his death...I woke up this morning and my 17 year old daughter was the first one to break the news to me...yes I raised my children to appreciate great music. Me and my kids cried at his passing.
On the surface this song is everything I used to love to hate in rock-n-roll; dressed up aging rockers, polished, slick guitars, and a cheesy video, but this song is in my soul. And I love the entire EP, even the quirky shoe song. Even though I discovered this CD only in the last year, it's one of my all time favorites.
I saw this song performed on the Sound +Vision tour of 1990. I thought it was cool of Bowie to let Belew take over the vocal mic for most of the song, and lead the band too.
What great memories I saw Adrian belew and King Crimson do this I think it was on South Street in Philly but of course no David Bowie but it was still a great concert
Bowie is music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and of course Belew is quite quite good too. I am working for a musical website that i can't nominate... but i am listening so much horrid music that sometimes i have to come here and open my hearth with wonderful wonderful David!
Luv this song kinda gets u going, I bet that david and Adrian had a blast. The big 6'2" actress who portraits the Russian woman is Julie T. Wallace FYI.
It's interesting how it came together. Belew has said Bowie was trying to get him in as musical director for a tour, but the dates clashed with, iirc, contractually required studio time for his next solo record. So Bowie offered up material as an incentive to Belew (and I suspect more importantly Belew's label) to come on board. Bowie sent a tape of unused material, I think mostly from Tin Machine sessions, which also included some stuff he had recorded with Bryan Adams' backing band (PPR being one), which was (as Belew recalls) mostly awful, very raw and 'in progress'. So Belew added lots to it, new bass/guitar/drums, changed the structure, speed, instrumentation etc. I suspect if he had received more 'formed' demos his reverence of Bowie would have stopped him from making such drastic alterations. As a result, it has this great sound that is a real meshing of their talents, and can maybe be seen as a real collaborative composition between them both. Hopefully we'll get to hear the original demo one day to see how it all came together. This is a good page for some info on the track ----> bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2012/08/15/pretty-pink-rose/

2:27, 3:40,etc... As usual Adrian just freaking tears sh!t up on the guitar & shows he's about the best tremolo player around. Fantastic! He looks like he'd be fun to jam with as long as he didn't intimidate the heck out of me & make me get too tight. Bowie's weird, like the vid, but I like him too I guess. I've got nothing against weird.
scratching my head... was that the one where he descended from the ceiling talking on a plastic phone? i really like this song, but DB has done some really sillly shit. maybe he should just have a concert where he plays and sings. the theatrics and this vid seem to backfire.
Maybe if Belew didn't look like a bald ponytailed dweeb, the film could have focused on them both, but since Bowie was the cute one and Belew was the dork the film focused on Bowie since he was so hot. Focus on a living Ken doll over bald-ponytail Humpty-Dumpty any day of the week!
@jrsanford That little explosion is just the most obvious problem in this lame posting. I've seen live concert clips from smartphones that were better quality.
Just heard an interview w/ Adrian Belew that Bowie gave him these lyrics as a gift and that Adrian could do whatever he wanted to do with it. Who does that? BOWIE, man!
Seriously underrated song.
THANK YOU! I have loved this song since the first time I heard it on the radio and am always shocked by how many people don't know it. It is AWESOME!
Decades ago, I heard it on the radio and immediately went out and bought the Adrian Belew LP. Until I saw this video I never knew Bowie sang.
I saw him and Adrian back in 1990. It made my whole decade...
My cousin and I saw David Bowie with Adrian Belew on the Sound + Vision Tour... pure brilliance. Rest in peace David
Music Love I did too. Loved that show.
So devestated by his death...I woke up this morning and my 17 year old daughter was the first one to break the news to me...yes I raised my children to appreciate great music. Me and my kids cried at his passing.
I hope you used that as an object lesson on why not to smoke cigarettes.
What no hare pun...Bowie would have been seriously disappointed.
@@mantisbog oh arent you smart. Irrelevant to this lady's lovely comment.
God, do I love this song.
("Somewhere" I still have the cassette single for this song buried in my attic. Still makes me smile from ear-to-ear!)
Never knew this existed until today. I thought I knew all Bowie's material. Just goes to show!
Wow, me either! Amazing!
And I found it today!
And so did I :)
Same as and iam a total bowie fanatic all good this is so special exceptional
Two of my favorite musicians right here.
I played this song on my first day when I started in radio. This song rocks.
Bowie my favorite, and Belew, one of the few men who makes me love the sound of the Strat!
Absolutely fantastic, and so funny at the same time. They are great!
I loved this song when it came out and never forgot it. I do believe this is the first I have ever seen the video and I thank you for this!!!
RIP Bowie, my favorite song by you and Belew.
Imagine being suddenly challenged to a guitar duel by the then-most-recent frontman of King Crimson out of the blue.
Beautiful Julie Wallace (5th Element) graced this video.
This has become my new favorite video.......I can't go a day without listening to it!!!! Thank you very much for uploading!!
I wish we could have at least a semi-clear video of this masterpiece!!! Holy moly this is Edison era clarity!
Wow, that's awesome. Love both Belew and Bowie!
This is really an AMAZING song! Of course it is, as it was written by David Bowie! 😎😎😎😎😎 Belew is very talented, too!
The entire album Young Lions is excellent. I’ve owned multiple copies in all of the formats.
..we're living for you my love, and we're dying for you my love..
Just saw Adrian Belew perform this song last night.
Love His music. Thank you for giving The World your music, talent and greatness. You are missed. Rest peacefully,
Great album by Adrian Belew.
I saw this song performed on the Sound +Vision tour of 1990. I thought it was cool of Bowie to let Belew take over the vocal mic for most of the song, and lead the band too.
+Rik K I saw them during that tour with Joe Satriani opening. At the old Giants Stadium in N.J. My mother took me.
thanks for sharing that. "THAT" is actually what it's always been about...
I love it , love it ,love it! Thank you for posting this.
I love my freedom and ☮️. Roses without thorns are lovely. Xo
I went to see Bowie/Belew in Toronto on my 15th birthday. I'm 36 now and still remember the show like it was yesterday. AMAZING.
One of my all time favs! Thanks for posting!

Very catchy tune David wrote for Adrian , still can’t get over his passing :(
Love it only just heard this ❤️
Bowie is music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and of course Belew is quite quite good too.

His look at 1:24 makes me melt! What I wouldn't do to have him look at me like that.....
Luv this song kinda gets u going, I bet that david and Adrian had a blast. The big 6'2" actress who portraits the Russian woman is Julie T. Wallace FYI.

*Space ship ride-Out of this World*
ThankYou Ausstevee! A Really Strong song & Very Fun Vid, got some Radio & Video airplay.
awesome, great team, two of the best
The intro where Belew pops up and Bowie looks bemused is fucking magic.
Belew and Bowie omg, Belew is uber brilliant
Yup, very prescient in 2019: stevepafford.com/notredame/
CLASSIC
rock'n'roll rules!
Can see elements of Francis Rossi from Status Quo in Adrian. 😊
2:11 adrian said 👁️👄👁️
@LilyLemony same tour @ Dodger Stadium, and yes it was amazing.
I bought this 12" vinyl (wax) in 1988, & never heard this song until now. Bowie-type lyrics, don't know about the sound, though.
No, actually, you didn't, because this song was recorded in March 1990. Do better.
i saw them in concert in 1990 :)
That's the She-Devil! Wow
This just sounds like a Bowie song with Adrian doing a bit of lead guitar. City Of Tiny Lights.
Adrian Belew's Young Lions
thank you

Finally a real rendition of Pretty Pink Rose.
What the Hell happened at 3:46?

I honestly thought this was a Bowie song with Adrian on guitar...huh!
This is in fact a Bowie song, he gave it to Belew for his album saying he could do what he wished with it and in the end they sang it together.
It's interesting how it came together. Belew has said Bowie was trying to get him in as musical director for a tour, but the dates clashed with, iirc, contractually required studio time for his next solo record. @@BollingAllerod Great info on the track, it really does sound like a collaboration on their parts
@wotinblooblazes Belew said it best: "Virtuosity IS sexy."
Is there a better quality version of this out there?
@DinoLucca1 unique, charismatic, save intellect for Stravinsky and Beethoven.
Belew's a King (Crimson).
actor, songwriter, composer, clown - that's what perfectly describes mr Jones
Awesome combo, Belew and Bowie! Hey, does anyone have the lyrics to this song? Can't find 'em...

@mikey42 Julie T Wallace, actually - but yep, thats her Ok. Large as life!
👁 El ojo
I always thought this was a good song.
*HOO HOO*
I would like to play the guitar like Belew. Sad but true, I stink as a guitarplayer.
Is that Siouxsie in there?
what release is this on?
2:27, 3:40,etc... As usual Adrian just freaking tears sh!t up on the guitar & shows he's about the best tremolo player around. Fantastic! He looks like he'd be fun to jam with as long as he didn't intimidate the heck out of me & make me get too tight.

Rose looks suspiciously like Kurt Russell.
@mellobbello ???
‘Oh Daddy’ brought me here. Good song. That’s how you make a video for $100.00.
I have the weirdest crush on Julie T. Wallace. She's an amazon! Is she of polish descent, she looked like a polish lady.
Who is the Pretty Pink Rose? You guessed it: Frank Stalone.
sounds like the chords of Héroes. pum pum pan..pum pum pam...
Scary monsters ll

the woman's wearing a traditional polish outfit, she symbolizes christian faith
Adrian Belew is mind blowing on guitar and this a great song. Just wish the film focused a lot more on Belew and less on Bowie.
bowie is bowie when he was around you couldn't focus on anyone but him. rip my love

Anna Gore, go fuck yourself, nonentity
holy shit! that was bizarre
Bizarre, As it was meant to be.
it's a loud disjointed mess of a song but I kinda like it.
