      So yes. In fact, it seemed to me he should have redo the process after he saw points where he had avoidable hiccups. Remove all that and it would show the process was not complex.

    Great video for newcomers, LMDE 6 is my personal favourite, except I'm crazy, so I flip it over to the Debian Testing Repos, so it acts more like a rolling distro. For Windows software I have QEMU/virt-manager. For gaming I use the Flatpak version of Steam, Bottles & ProtonUp-Qt. Except for opening myself up to that xz-utils backdoor, it's been my most stable and favourite Linux setup to date.

    Note: The debian edition of Linux Mint doesn't come with the video driver manager, meaning that Debian Edition is mostly suitable for intermediate users.

    I don't know for sure with Windows11, but for hasing on at least Windows10, there is a native hash check, so no need to download a 3rd party tool. Right click on file you want to hash, click on SHA in the context menu, and pick SHA-256 in this case

    • @MrRussianComrad

      I think Windows11 simplified the context menu, so there might be an extra step of clicking something along the lines of "advanced" to show the hidden context menu options

    I know TPM and SecureBoot being requirements string a lot of users. However these are useful technologies to have access to in most cases. Unless you want to do stuff like load arbitrary kernel modules.
    I believe ubuntu(and by extension mint) has a system where you can use your own secureboot key which is what you use to sign things like nvidia drivers(if you need those).
    To demistify these a bit:
    Secureboot - an open standardized technology that forces the computer to only run signed modules. Typically OEMs use microsoft keys for that, although that is a side effect of Windows being the default. Any Linux OEM could just generate and shove their own keys.
    TPM - another open standard for a device that can securely do cryptographic/arithmetic operations, generate random numbers and store your keys.

    I recommend to use Rufus instead of Etcher, with Etcher you might struggle to get your USB-stick back because etcher does it in dd-mode, with Rufus you will usually not have this problem. Also Rufus has excellent support, if for a specific distro an extra step is needed then Etcher will just do it for you, after asking permission.

    • @peterschmidt9942
      @peterschmidt9942 6 місяців тому

      They both work pretty well. Although I find Rufus is better for creating Windows boot USBs with their extra options. But never had issues with installing Linux with Etcher. Its a very simple tool and generally pretty quick.

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 6 місяців тому +2

      @@peterschmidt9942 As I said, a big problem of Etcher is that it always uses dd which makes it a mess to get your USB-stick back (having to open a partition-manager, maybe not succeeding directly). With Rufus you can still just put any other files on the same USB-stick after the ISO has been put up there. That is a pretty good reason for regular users to use Rufus if they are on Windows. when you make a bootable 64-GB USB-stick with a 3 GB Mint on it then you rather keep the remaining 61 GB as free space without first having to mess with a partition-tool to be able to write to it again. This video was targeted at regular users, they are not so handy with this. Hell, I struggled multiple times to get my USB-stick fixed after dd was used by Etcher, I did not enjoy it.

    • @peterschmidt9942
      @peterschmidt9942 6 місяців тому +1

      @@peterjansen4826 Most of the time the USB sticks I use are dedicated to Linux installs, so using etcher to just chuck another distro on generally works fine. I have had issues with other live linux usb creators in the past that play shenanigans with USBs. I keep a handy tool called BOOTICEx86 if this happens (although it's Windows based).
      But whatever works for you.

    I really wanna like linux but the biggest hurdle for me is the long commands a lot of it uses. Don't get me wrong, windows has problems, but downloading something and then just clicking on an EXE is extremely user friendly. I know Linux has flatpacks and stuff, but it has a massive learning curve. Maybe if I didn't have to use windows PCs for my work and I could commit pretty much all my time to learning it things would be different, but as of now, Linux to me is cool but not something I have time to invest in and learn.

I fear a future when printed knowledge has vanished, and all knowledge and intelligence is derived from "the cloud" which can be restricted in sectors with defiant populations. Imagine a future where knowledge can be "metered" as a form of control, just like access to oxygen was used to control the masses in the movie "Total Recall."

    I somewhat recently did this with my Asus Vivobook, but with MX Linux KDE. TBH I think Debian/Devuan based distros are really, finally and truly coming into their own, and superseding Ubuntu based ones in terms of usability and ease of use. LMDE 6, MX Linux 23.2, AntiX 23.1, Sparky Linux, Q4OS, Parrot Workstation, SolydXK, Endless OS, Vanilla OS, I could go on listing really great distros based on Debian that either use custom repos, a mix of stable and testing, or are immutable, Flatpak centric distros. TBF, Debian has been making huge improvement strides, while Canonical has been making blunder after blunder in terms of bad decisions and mistakes.

The number pad functionality for the touch pad was the only thing that didn't work. Webcam functions, as does the internal mic. Yes either have your freedoms or have the convenience sadly you cannot have both especially in this day and age
      And with Windows in such a dominant position, it's very very difficult to leave their services and find an alternative that works in every instance that you need it to
      Which my opinion is a bad thing because Windows is basically a Monopoly
      but it also means that it's very difficult because there is no solution that exists outside or Windows except if you build it yourself
      And why do that when windows is already gone through the trouble of doing exactly that
      they built a program that can help diagnose your car they built a program that already monitors your commercial $20,000 air conditioning system, they built a program that helps interface for competitive gaming
      And not everyone is in the position of building from the group up a program just to stay off of windows that takes hundreds of thousands of hours and possibly dollars when the Windows given product already exists for customer usage

      I agree that it could be hard, or a bother, to set up a new device in Linux (anything). However, as a retired Computer Tech, I can tell you certainty that Windows will 'get' you one way or another. For example, Windows kindly tells you you have updates to install, so you kindly install them and then spend the next few hours or DAYS trying to figure out why some of you favorite programs you use every day are broken for no reason. (This happened to me.) Another example, you have a wireless mouse and use it with a PC you use as an 'entertainment center', which I do because I hate the clunky controllers that come with TV's nowadays. Your mouse battery starts to get weaker, and loses touch with Windows for a millisecond. Windows finds it again: Oh look! A new mouse! As it adds a registry entry for it. Again, and again, and again until you have hundreds...yes hundreds of mouse entries in the Registry for the same +&@# mouse. Eventually, Windows has no solution for this user constantly adding new mice...and disables ALL of the USB ports! Had me so stumped I thought the motherboard gave up, and I bought a new laptop. THEN, I got to playing with the old PC and found the hundreds of mouse entries in the Registry. So I went into the Device Manager on a hunch and removed the main USB controller. Rebooted and viola', all the USB ports worked. Windows cost me $2700 because it's STUPID! In Linux, at least if it's broke it's because I was stupid. LOL

      one drive being ms, not surprising. They especially do not want to make a build for Linux officially anytime soon because their OS is declining while Linux is on the rise. Now expecting to be at 5% by end of the year, and a huge spike after the EOL of windows 10, they are in deep waters for bad decision making. Linux can be used on the current hardware people have while windows 11 cannot. Anyways, there are alterantives like google drive, which is better than onedrive imo, and then there's megasync, dropbox, etc. that all support Linux. But yeah, I don't mind google drive one bit. You already exceeded MacOS difficulty, and almost have reached the Windows difficulty level. Mac and Windows have their problems, but so does Linux. Stop playing with the small-time Linux stuff. Be a real soldier and install FreeBSD or SCO System 5. With a Free version of Unix you can still use Plasma, Bash, Wine, and Emacs to your hearts content.

    It is better to use something like arch or tumbleweed. It will support more hardware. You could also use Manjaro or Endeavour.

      This video is aimed at new Linux Users coming from Windows, an Arch User would not need this tutorial. For this target group, LMDE is a perfect choice. A user that's completely new to Linux would inevitably break something while downloading a package from the AUR if they used Arch or any Arch-based distro. I also wouldn't worry about hardware support on LMDE.

      EndeavourOS and Fedora are the best distros in my opinion.

      I've always had issues trying to install OpenSUSE, definitely not for new users. While I've installed plenty of Linux distros over the years, I switched over with Manjaro (which was a big mistake). I found it very unstable and wasted more time fixing things and reinstalling than actually using it.
      For a new user, Fedora is a good choice too (once you add the extra repo's, codecs and non free drivers if applicable). I've been using that since 35 and rarely have issues.

    Installing Linux is very easy, try to run a video card properly and see what happens. All you get is minimum drivers. Good for everything but gaming. When you download Linux files from the card makers, they are either are corrupt or they never finish loading.
    Every time microsoft tells you your system is too old, it's absolute bull. Same as an Ipad talk about pollution, chuck it in the garbage. I hope this causes microsoft stock to drop into the trash along with their Ipads.
    I have an old laptop, and it runs Linux np told the hard drive was too small (no games) not enough memory to update windows. Could not run netflix or youtub it does now np.

    If you're using Linux Mint Debian Edition, then you should just use MX Linux. It's better than Mint's version of Debian in just about every way. More tools, more support, better install options, etc.

      MX Linux better than Mint? In your dreams😄

    • @k.b.tidwell

      I ran MX 19 through 21 up through early 2023. I used it a LOT. Suggested it to many, many people. I'm on LMDE 6 now because it just feels more comfortable. Yes, that's all subjective, but I believe that most Windows refugees will like the feel of Mint better than MX. Mint covers more rough edges than MX does, and you have to think about WHY MX gives you so many tools. You're going to have to get more down in the weeds with MX and you're going to need the tools. That said, I haven't found myself missing any necessary tools with LMDE either.
      One notable spot where MX rises above Mint is in boot speed. It was very noticeably faster to get to a working desktop for me than Mint or LMDE is out of the box because MX uses sysVinit instead of systemd. Systemd can be a slog.

      @@k.b.tidwell MX also gives you the choice to use systemd as well if you so desire. Just gotta use the boot options tool and switch things around super quickly. But yeah, their SysVInit implementation is damn good and indicative that they have a ton of experience in terms of how to maximize its potential.
      As to being more in the weeds... I don't think so. MX has pretty good defaults. Over 50% of the tools, you'll very probably never have to use, and that's being conservative with my estimate. but it's like the Windows Control Panel. I may not go into, say, the Mouse options very much at all, but I still want the option there regardless. And the reality is that MX provides much more system administration tools than Mint does. I'd rather have them there and not need them.
