    As someone who just got their A+ I do agree that you are going to be looking at help desk jobs. However, I was able to get my cert and classes for free through a local origination and grants so that could be an option for you if you qualify and want to get your foot through the door in the field. Also, some of the companies hiring people at an entry level will reimburse you and will also provide room for advancement if you pursue other certs. A+ is not a great by any means and you should definitely keep pursuing other certs. But if you have 0% experience actually working in the field and you're a bit older it can at least give you a platform to work off of and provide some on paper experience that you can use to further yourself.

      Agreed It seems like a lot of the time HR is doing the write up for the requests and the job description and they base that off, it seems to me, off the last couple employees resumes and as our host said "whatever is in the closet." So Cisco certs having more 'weight' makes sense. Even if practically they are more or less equal at some things.

  • @ChipsChallenge95
    @ChipsChallenge95 3 роки тому +1

    1. Larger companies may flat out REQUIRE Cisco certs to maintain/gain partner status and access large discounts on equipment and licensing. 2. Cisco certs are in-fact “vendor-neutral” for the most part, especially at the CCNA level, and get more specialised as you go through NP and IE. The only Cisco proprietary protocols covered in NA (Enterprise) are VTP, CDP, EIGRP (not that in depth), PAgP, and GLBP/HSRP. 3. “Touching government computers” requires at least Public Trust level clearance (lowest level of clearance) OPM SF-85P as opposed to OPM SF-86 (95 page application as opposed to 136 pages), contractors are often exempt for non-sensitive systems, and you can apply with just a green card.

    If you want to stand out in pile, go get a Juniper cert. You'll learn all the same things as the CISCO certs, but in a slightly different syntax. Those requiring CISCO certs understand it's equivalent and those wanting Juniper certs prefer actual Juniper certs. I also highly recommend ITIL and CCSK for those looking for certs without a renewal requirement.

  • @FlyboyHelosim

    I'm always very sceptical about these certifications. Where I live, PC tech repair shops boast "Apple certified" when all they do is fix IBM-compatibles or "Microsoft certified" when all they do is fix Macs. It looks good in a shop window to the uninitiated but can have very little real-world significance. I did a course on MS Office which would usually have cost a fair bit of money, and honestly completed it and passed without really learning anything about MS Office that I couldn't have taught myself in an afternoon. I decided to go into the I.T. industry myself, as self-employed, because the barriers to entry in an existing company are too high, expensive, and irrelevant.

    Actually, if I were you, guys, I would skip the CCNA and go straight to CCNP. They teach basically the same stuff but in more depth. It's two exams, however: One Core exam and a Specialization exam which are both doable. A couple of years back, the CCNP Routing and Switching consisted of three pretty tough exams where you had to configure stuff on your own. Now it's only two exams and you don't need to configure anything :)

      Edit: however, like Edward said, doing basic projects or contributions on GitHub would probably be good enough. I took MTA Intro to Python, and I feel like my stuff on GitHub Gist would be sufficient to demonstrate the concepts in the cert. An HR person with no knowledge of the field is probably more likely to pick out a resume with certs, so it seems like a solid way of increasing your initial chance at being seen. It’s similar to a degree in that any employer can just see it and think “ah yes he knows things” which should help getting your resume passed on.

    • @elinars5638
      @elinars5638 3 роки тому

      The certs are useful if you have nothing more valuable to fill the 1-2 pages of resume space with. If you find yourself having a hard time fitting everything into 1-2 pages, it's not worth keeping the less valuable or relevant stuff.

    • @bibr2393
      @bibr2393 3 роки тому

      Fair point @elinars . For the first job it's nice to have certs / courses so you can stand out. When you have some work experience, maybe few bigger certs it's worth to only list them. No one wants to read through 4 pages of certs and courses that they never heard of

    Most networking Vendors have copied the Cisco command set or they are very similar.
    There are a few exceptions ie Juniper from memory it been a while since i worked on a network with them.
    But Getting a Cisco, Juniper, Extreme or any other networking cert the concepts apply to most vendors. Security certs is the way to go now days.

    IMO Comptia trifecta is valuable if you love technology but dont know much. They will show you just how much you don't know, so you get over yourself and stop thinking you know everything just because you sit at a pc all day. and also help you realize what you are and aren't interested in doing. After getting Net+, I realized I fucking hate that shit. It was far cheaper to learn that way than by going for a CCNA.

    Here's something I've had rolling around in my brain [being the cheap, tight-wad that I am], do services like "The Great Courses plus" and "Brilliant" offer or are they the same as certifications? Being subscription-based, you could take as many as you want and thus would be more affordable for the individual courses. I've done some minor, 10 minute research on this but haven't turned up much.

      Definitely I wish I had taken them. You just need a guardian to sign off on it when you take the tests.

    • @tititwist46
      @tititwist46 3 роки тому +1

      CompTIA and Cisco certifications go through PearsonVUE currently which requires two forms of ID for testing. If you are an adult, this means your government ID (must have a visible signature) and a secondary form of ID (school, work, or other) with your full name, recent photo, and signature (I didn't need my second ID to have a signature, but both CompTIA and Cisco's ID Candidacy policies state that it is required). In your case as a minor, your primary ID would be your parent or guardian's government ID and any ID with a full name and recent photo for the secondary. The guardian must be present to sign the test-taker in, but only your signature is required to sign out. Besides needing a guardian as a minor, there doesn't seem to be any minimum age. Just know that if you take them when you're 16, they'll expire three years later. CompTIA's certification status will renew upon recertification of a new release of the certification test or by taking another CompTIA certification. Primarily, this would mean that if you have Network+, passing Security+ will align Network+'s expiry date with Security+'s (that is, both will expire three years from your completion of Security+). You'll have to check CompTIA's recertification guide to find out which superior exams will renew your current ones (nothing renews Server+. CRINGE). Cisco's exams seem to be the same, but my professor said that you have to take a CCNP to renew the CCNA. I'm not sure if this is true, but after two years with your CCNA it'd be better to specialize in one of the CCNP exams. Most network support internships won't even hire minors, so only having a year to renew your certs after getting a job could pose some issues. You should also check the availability of certain exams as SY0-005 (Security+) will be phased out soon. While the information from that exam has remained relevant for SY0-006, A+ tends to change quite a bit with every release.
