I wish more stuff was actively targeted at us as semi verbal / nonverbal autistic ppl (rather than being targeted at parents) but I do appreciate this video existing
Me too, im a highschool asl student and Im taking it because Im semi-verbal, going non-verbal under extreme stress and/or over stimulation and under stimulation. Teachers dont talk abkut mute, selectivley mute and nonverbal people as a whole.
Me too. I’m 30, I’m just discovering my possible autism. I go mute when very overwhelmed and have difficulty communicating that I CAN still communicate, just not verbally.
Same! That is why I am currently learning, plus on my good days I'm super quiet so I figured having another way I can communicate would be helpful. And on my bad days its like my words are trapped in my body and its kinda scary.
I work with children with Autism and wish some of their parents didn't have a stigma against teaching ASL. They think it will stump them from learning to talk verbally🤦 Yet they don't understand how the kids get so frustrated because they can't communicate. It's great with the ones we teach ASL too. One of my kiddos I had did amazing.. She was able to communicate yes/no, that she wants to color, wanted her stickers, draw, eat her berries, drink water etc. It was a huge improvement!
Hi! I'm an autistic newly-adult and frequently lose my ability to speak when I get overwhelmed; this is extremely useful, especially as someone dependent on other people at the moment. Thank you so much.
was signing "hungry" with you while sitting at my desk and cracked my wrist on the desk top. Thank you for showing me "hurt" right after. was so perfect I couldn't stop laughing! Had to share with you.
My son is 6 years old and is non verbal autistic. I am just beginning this journey to hopefully start communicating better with him instead of just reading body language. It is a bit overwhelming but I am trying to learn more one day at a time. I really appreciate videos like this :)
I've been coming to terms lately with being a late diagnosed autistic (long story) and only recently realized that simple sign language might be a good way for me to communicate my needs and feelings when stressed. It's kinda weird; I realize I'm... Kinda picking this up quickly. I've always struggled when trying to learn a new language, but somehow this is easier. Thanks again for this.
Thank you so much. I'm so glad I found your video. My 3 yr old daughter was just diagnosed with Level 3 Autism and is non verbal. It's been very hard for me to understand her needs and wants. I'm definitely going to try this out with her. Thank you so so much.
hi! thanks so much for the video! I have Asperger's and I'm not nonverbal however I've noticed the I go completely nonverbal when smoking weed or drinking, the words become impossible to string together it feels as if I don't even speak English anymore. my friends describe it as if I think in my head that i'm speaking but it comes out as gibberish or my voice isnt making noise at all. (I'm sorry I may not be your intended demographic) there is a mutual friend at parties who is actually fluent in sign and always helps me! it's almost as if I'm invisible until she comes and asks me how I'm doing and I can finally communicate to someone. I know very basic sign that i've picked up over the years but want to learn more simple basic ways to ask for help so this is great! thanks for the help!
@@pattydukes5772 depends on the person, the strain, and amount! Not everything works for everyone, but if they are in a safe place to try it then it won't be too bad.
You're the best one so far I've found on UA-cam! You explain the signs clearly and don't go too fast. I'm learning ASL to be able to communicate with my cousin who will visit me from the USA next month. Thank you!
I’m an adult, but I have nonverbal episodes when I get super overwhelmed and I shut down. Idk if it is Autism, ADHD, or CPTSD, but I’ve been diagnosed with all of them. I think that I have to focus so hard on breathing and grounding myself that speech becomes difficult and I think the act of moving my hands helps to ground me. I found this very helpful.
This has helped me so much. I'm learning with my friends and its so relieving to find a way to communicate when I physically cant. we show each other the signs we learn every day and we practice using them. Its lovely having somebody to learn with and your videos help a lot for me.
Fantastic job...thank you!...New Foster Family and I'm desperately trying to communicate with our new kiddo...such a sweetheart but so frustrated bcuz I'm just not with it! I'm on it kid...I will get this right I promise you🤗

My mom & dad are deaf just to add that in. I've seen that you're licensed in Tennessee in Interpreting, I have a question... Having a license/certification are they the same as one another & is it the same process in Tennessee as in Kentucky to obtain both of those?Thank you for your time & response! 😉
Hello! I have not seen any official list, but the overall messaging and from my experience as well, is to teach words that they would use the most. So, that would be different from person-to-person, depending on their preferential activities, foods, etc... Some basic vocabulary that you can also incorporate from the beginning are communication words such as: yes, no, wait, more, etc... I hope this helps!! :)
Yes, you definitely can! I would suggest choosing a few signs that you feel are most useful/functional and keep using those regularly. Repetition and exposure are key to retention and expression when it comes to Sign Language with children.
I started signing when I was a few months old (I’m autistic myself). So long as you keep at it and pay attention to how they best learn it should work out
Some of these signs are too abstract for some autistic children. Teaching them to sign for a particular food item (e.g. cookie) rather than “hungry”, which is technically a feeling and is an abstract concept.
Elon Musk said “What’s the point of sign language in a video if you have substitutes? Am I missing something?” He is right because most deaf people couldn’t understand that closed captioning “illiteracy”. ASL is not great to teach deaf children or a bad education because they struggle how to read sentences. I am still unhappy if ASL exists in some public schools except deaf schools. Hopefully, cued speech will teach them instead in the future. Sigh poor deaf children 😢 STOP TEACHING SIGN LANGUAGE. CUED SPEECH IS THE BEST CHOICE INSTEAD!

Yeah.. it would be nice to not be infantilized. But I’m glad the video does exist.
They act like we never make it to adulthood
Thanks! I have autism and I'm not nonverbal, but I do have selective mutism. I can't speak if I get too anxious.
Semi-verbal?

I'm a para-educator and found this super helpful so I can better communicate with some of our non-verbal kids. Thank you!

Is there any official study as to what words should be taught initially to autistic children

Can you start signing for the first time when your child is 3??

My grandson doesn't use his pointer finger. Is there a sub?
