Excellent demo, the 100 seems great kit, well worth a look. Thinking of moving up from a Sony A77 DSLR. I've been into video as an amateur since 1993. So a change is imminent! Who in the UK supplies Sony kit though?
@StupidlyRandom That is a good point but bare in mind that for £2.000 what you get is a DSLR with the standard wide angle lens. Its not designed to be a Video camera. Its £2.000 max for the DSLR plus the accessorise, SLR Cinema mount rigs (For a good rig another 1-2 grand) A good monitor, Beachtek XLR convertor for 2 pro XLR outputs (Which baring in mind the NEX-fs100 has already got two XLR outputs) a good eye peice for the DSLR LCD monitor, A follow focus rig. The list goes on.
Hi I was also planing for NEX-VG900. But after watching this video i'm going for this. Thanks. And and can you mention the name of the tripod you have used presentation.
Can anyone explain to me what specific buttons/switches/dials will allow you to adjust specific exposure properties such as ISO, Framerate, Aperture and Shutter Speed? For example, when I adjust the Aperture dial on the FS-100 nothing happens. If I push the menu button and go into the menu settings then I can see where to make some adjustments but it doesn't correlate with the dial on the side of the lense-area in any way, whatsoever. Does anyone know how to literally, access the controls for the Aperture, ISO and Shutter Speed and Framerate for the SF-100?
Reading the instructions for use helps. Yes, it's not a camera for a beginner, there are too many settings and combinations for that. For example, if you have switched sideways to automatic, you cannot operate the buttons manually. Switch to manual.
@StupidlyRandom Depends really on what your shooting. I don't agree with DSLR's being converted to video cameras. Fair enough it maybe cheaper in some ways but if you really are going for a professional rig why not just go for a professional video camera like this 35mm one? I would never choose a Beachtek adaptor over built in XLR inputs because 9V's do not last two seconds especially on phantom power. You have a point dont get me wrong but videocameras are designed to be videocameras.
Does anyone have an opinion on how the Sony NEX-FS100 measures up against the Canon D5 Mk2 for night shooting? Are they almost equal when filming without extra lights at night? I'm an amateur film maker looking for my first camera and the D5 Mk2 seemed the way to go before our school purchased this Sony. Thanks
@JDMVideographing not really, a 550d + 50mm 1.8, 18-50mm f/2.8 and a 55-250mm zoom will be about £1100, and a LCD viewfinder (£45), cheap shoulder pad (£40), mounting rails (£150), and a juicelink for like £150 and your all set, thats about £1600 total!!!! so basically 3 times less thn a super 35mm... and with the leftover money you could buy a JIB, camera slider, follow focus, and a couple more lenses, and if you switch the 550d for a 35mm slr like a 5d the total still comes at about £2700,!!!
NES FS100 is $6550 and records in 2k, blackmagic only records RAW in 2k, what I was saying is that since the Scarlet has dropped to $13000 I would rather get a Scarlet as it has 4k raw - the blackmagic is a waste of time as it only records in 2k.
@StupidlyRandom Well yes of course. I use a Beachtek XLR adaptor for my FX1 & that only last 4 hours on a full 9V & only 45 mins on Phantom. DSLR have a fantastic qulity for the price. But im talking more about this budget film making (4-8 Grand) for freelancers. What im saying is with that kind of Budget i would buy the FS100 over a DSLR.
@DoomGifter i know! but i would go with 3000$ for a camera that shoots 2k raw with 13 stops dynamic range. of course. a red camera is and will be a red camera.
I got 2 of this lens, one with Sony VG20, and the second with Sony FS100. within a year both this lens became faulty. that's when you start zooming the picture starts shaking or vibrating. The lens was replaced within 15 days by Sony. But within 6 months of the new replaced lens it became faulty again and this time it was a focusing problem, even in manual mode it does not get focused. The picture remains out of focus. My advice please do not buy any of Sony product with E-mount Lens.
A $6500+ camera with slow lens, Weighing over 1kg with 40+ buttons on the top and side, You need or rig to operate it, inability to shoot still images, no actual viewfinder, minimal selection of lenses, poor build quality etc. compare that with a $3499 camera under 1kg, intuitive controls with less than 20 buttons, ability to shoot great stills as well as great video with great DOF, portable, Huge range of lenses, great quality, magnesium alloy body + more. I would rather a MK 3, or a Red, Tbh.
All those moaning about the lens and no nd filter lol. You can add a good lens and matte box on a rig which will have filters anyway. It's not meant to be point and shoot at this level.

Man, saving up my money for this one!

Is there a zoom function for the assignable buttons? If so, how would one access it?
I have been wondering a long time, but I doubt it; even so, I wanted to know ¿Can this camcorder be used for TV broadcasting? Cheers.

excellent review. I have a shoot in the morning with this and this helped me prep. 5/5

I'd love to see a review of the Cannon EOS 1DC

i think the pic quality is not so great, too dark and too flat . Just my Opinion.
Too dark and too flat? I think you should learn the settings!

I have not had any problems with that yet. Maybe it's your karma?
This is the way forward not DSLR's shooting in video mode.....
@GanEdenAustralia hmm doubt it
Most of this tutorial is just reading what is printed next to each button. I am literate. So i still don't know much about the camera i just bought.
manque sous titre en français car sourd a 90 % ce serait le TOP

Oh geez where can I get 6000 bucks
a red? then you'll have to get another like uh. 10.000 dollars man... i would go for a blackmagic then...

It just needed ND filters to be perfect...
Interesting I have 2.million plus views on some of my Sony handycam! Videos and 29k subscribers. Sony should give me a Cam to test?
