Thoroughly enjoyed that!! As a kiwi living in oz....like most of us! There was one show that i remember.....strangers, with my teen crush....martin henderson.
Under the Mountain, loved the book and the series as well! I remember most of the other shows here as well, though don't recall much about Steel Riders?!
Wowwsers. Talk about going back in time. Born 1976 here, Wainuiomata Lower hutt, Olly olsen was who I ran home to watch after school, play school I also remember. Was an awesome time growing up back then. Cars were cars and people actually spoke to each other. Mail had not gone e-mail then, so letters in the post were the norm. Rubbish men runners, milk men, pocket money was 50 cents, so imagine having a dollar note or a 2 dollar note back then fuuuuuuuuuuu lol best days man. Now it's like this: 🙄🤦♂️
Great lineup! Not a series, but who else remembers The Monster's Christmas (1981)? For years I had fragments and images stuck in my memory but no idea what it was. I finally stumbled upon it quite by accident on the NZ On Screen site, where you can watch the whole thing.
Omigod where did this awesome channel come from? You've done a great job collating decent looking recordings of these series and giving edifying commentary. So much nostalgia seeing these 🥰 Cheers bro.
This is awesome, love it! I love the 80s too, and only been in NZ since 2008 so very interested in finding out more about NZ in my favourite decade ;-)
Children's TV in this country really went down the gurgler from the 1990's onwards. It finally died in this country at the end of 1995, when Jason Gunn's show was cancelled. A lot of this was the broadcasting reforms, with TVNZ required to be fully commercial, and NZ On Air funding NZ content. We wouldnt get all these unique NZ shows under the current system.
I can remember a show called The Mad Dog Gang (written by Ian Mune I think), but that might have been late 1970s. Used to love watching W3 and It's Academic. Was also a fan of Super Sale (hosted by Bob Parker), Mastermind and University Challenge. Enjoy quiz shows to this day. In its later years, It's Academic was hosted by John Hayden (who occasionally read the news). Lockwood Smith went on to a political career with the National Party. He was also Speaker of the House under the last National Government. (He's now retired.) I can't remember that Sea Urchins show at all. It would have been right up my alley too. Was it it on TV2? I tended to watch TV1 more. I can remember watching things like CHiPs, Chopper Squad and The Famous Five in the early '80s, and I think they were all on One. Wonder if Sea Urchins was on at the same time as The Famous Five? It looks like the sort of show that would have screened at around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, which was the time slot for The Famous Five. From the mid-80s though, I do remember Terry and the Gunrunners, The Kids from O.W.L. and After School. Some scenes from Terry and the Gunrunners were filmed at Musick Point in Auckland, which I recognised because I'd been there a few months earlier while on holiday with my parents. The scenes with Rob Muldoon were filmed in the Musick Memorial Radio Station building there (or at least, it was used for external shots).
the goodnight kiwi ending on tv back in the day sparked a bit of a debate as to how did the cat push the button on the elevator to make it go up and the other thing was that the cat sometimes laid down or was sitting upright
I’d forgotten all about Kids From OWL! I also always thought it was Chit Chat, not Chic Chat. Surprised it only ran for 3 years, I remember it quite well. We were spoiled for what were dubbed “kidult” shows in the ‘80s, it’s a shame we don’t seem to have anything like that anymore.
Hi, hoping you or others on your channel can help me. There was a New Zealand or Australian childrens show on in the uk in the mornings sometime between 1987-1990 and i loved it but cannot find it and can’t remember the name. A bit like The Henderson Kids but what i can remember is that it was a group of young kids being looked after during the day by a young teenage girl l, set in a coastal area, and they would stumble across people upto no good etc. not much to go on but i do remember the brunette older girl with a slightly chubby face standing in the doorway of a house with a white door in the opening credits (at least thats what I remember from 30+ years ago). Hoping that someone here will recognise the show from that vague description! Any help would be very much appreciated.
Great channel, just wondering if there was a school holiday movie daily on tv 2 during the 80s? Pretty sure there was, if so I was wondering if there’s a library or scans of tv guides that had a list of those films?
Love that last bit with the Kiwi bird and the pussy cat telling everyone to switch off the teev and call it a night. I moved to NZ in 1992 when that still existed, and coming from the USA it was like stepping back in time about 30 years to a more innocent era. If you wanted to stay up later and watch anything you used a VCR with pre-recorded or rented movies, and there was only crappy slow dial-up internet with limited content. NZ only had three TV channels back then, and the 3rd one had only recently arrived and you had to install a special antenna on your house to receive it. That was in central Auckland, but if you lived out in the sticks, which was anywhere else except Wellington or Christchurch, hmmm... that's why God invented sheep. ;-)
Oh wow, Phil from The Amazing Race on the Spot On show haha xD I was born in 87 so I'm too young for most of these. Watched What Now religiously though xD
So catchy it cameout in 89 and Dave Dobbyn did the Song Space Junk there be so many other shows that cameout bit more research he's got the main stuff we only had 2channels perfection pinnacle
Oh my goodness - I got to the Woolley valley bit and had to turn it off because the background music you chose IS SO ANNOYING!! ( lol) 🙉I have a headache now but the content was good I remember all these shows in my child hood
Under the mountain , that was really a classic - remember watching it in NZ on holiday as a kid
To be blessed and part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s
I only showed up for Count Homogenized- I was not disappointed.
The Count was so popular he got his own series. The actor loved playing him.
The Goodnight Kiwi at the end was a nice touch
Thanks! Thought it was fitting to end the video. :)

Under the mountain ... Omg. Thank you very much ❤️❤️ I also see terry and the gunrunners👍
What a great time growing up in the 80's and 90's. Such great, classic Kiwi telly. A few here I missed, would be great to see them all.
OMG love thingy
Under the Mountain had a great soundtrack performed by the NZSO. Iconic series.
I saw Children of the Dog Star on Dutch television as a kid (subtitled), loved it!

Thanks! Hopefully some more content soon, when "real life" stops getting in the way, haha. :)
@@nzinthe80s12 Under The Mountain scared me too, I had a huge crush on the main girl ❤️.
Bro you da man. I've been feeling nostalgic lately and your channel popped up on my feed. Subbed!
I still remember What Now banning Thundercats for being too "violent" which is laughable today.
A great cartoon like all the others
Thundercats was the best part of What Now
This is awesome, love it! I love the 80s too, and only been in NZ since 2008 so very interested in finding out more about NZ in my favourite decade ;-)
More to come soon! :)

Great vid mate! Lots of stuff I'd forgotten.

Nice video package mate. I didn't know any of those shows (except What Now) but it was fun learning about them!
Glad you learnt about some new shows! :)
I live in 🇺🇸 but I did enjoy the show Freaky which came out in 2003

Bought back some memories! What about 3:45 live! Used to love that show!
Yep, that's another I recall. That one started in 1989 - I was 16 then so probably wasnt so much into after school TV. 😀
@@nzinthe80s12 true, neither was I by the time I was16 😁 I was 12 when 3 45 live started! I remember it fondly.

I was on the new university challenge
My uncle is in terry and the gunrunners 5:25
Hey, does anyone have Kids from OWL, P.E.T. Detectives, Tales from the Mist and that series about the haunted school, all episodes?
Billy t James was the traffic cop in under the mountain
What about "space knights"

Loved What Now. What about Shazam?
I've got a separate video lined up for shows like Shazam, RTR, and Radio with Pictures. :)
Moro bar ad!
All these shows look terrible, us 90's kids had it so much better!
Hah! I was on W-3
