It was not damaged badly as was exaggerated in the media. The plane had no visible burns or damage in satellite photos. They flew this plane back to Russia. If the dome was damaged, it can be replaced faster. Electronics on board are more complex and harder to replace but there was no on board fire.

The most recent information is using Boeing's 737-800s, although smaller, but the upgrades in radar, antennas is vastly improved over the present E-3. The Aussies are flying that version of AWACS in their fleet.
It's so large and has more limited maneuverability than most other planes on the battlefield I would be surprised if modern missiles would be tricked by flares and chaff when the target is so large. But I am sure the Air Force would have tested this
Maintenance Nightmare. What was it tail# 1497 still had passenger windows in it. My favorite tail# 0008 pronounced “Balls 8”. Heard it burned up in Nellis on Redflag. Don’t forget to pop aft lower door in case of SF6 leak.
AWACS has been around since 1954 with the EC-121 AEW&C being the first, not this plane. This one is a marvelous upgrade, but not the first. I was a an EC-121 crew member of the 552nd AEW&C Wing 1958 thru 1962. Navy version was the WV-2
The US Air Force need to need to upgrade this aircraft. It is well maintain but really old. The 747-8 is the only four engine aircraft built by Boeing that can replace the 707.
@@kingofjamrock this thing flies around and tracks enemy aircraft hundreds of miles away in real time. it "lights" them up for your own fighter jets to recognize them with passive radars without giving up their own location , or for air to air missiles with passive radars to find their targets. satellites serve a very different purpose (reconnaissance and navigation or espionage mostly)
1 Are the four engines of the E3 the original version? 2. A 250-mile signal sweep range is no longer sufficient for early warning.. 3. What is cruising altitude? These questions should have been addressed by your narrative.
We used to tell the girls in Iceland we were pilots of the radar dome. That we sat inside the dome & could launch from the aircraft & is what people mistake as a UFO. Lol a great pickup line! 😂 🤣 😁

That’s a problem in the Air Force in general. If you want career advancement, get promoted to high ranking positions, etc, you got to be a pilot.
