This is the comparison I’ve been waiting for. I bought the dark sky and thought it would be fine. I saw the issues you pointed out, but your comparison photos make the second sight look so much better. Might have to double dip.
I don't get why MPI & 2nd Sight didn't include new deleted scenes / outtakes (15mins) which were in their 40th ann. releases. 2022 German Turbine 4k included them as well as Family Portrait 1988 60min documentary which is also missing in 2023 releases.
If you're looking for a grimy, sort of an old-school grindhouse feel with more film grain then go with the Dark Sky version. But if you want a vibrant, a more "cleaned-up" version then go with Second Sight. It all just comes down to personal preference. I'd personally go with Dark Sky
I have the Second Sight version and the German release which I think is identical to the Dark Skies edition. I've found that the Second Sight edition is a little more cleaner as opposed to the more Grindhouse look of Dark Skies. I think I prefer the Second Sight. Keep up the great work 👍
I bought both. The second sight one is available as a one disk 4k option so you don't have the region locked bluray and save some money. That is the one I bought as I also don't care for the red, white, black artwork in the whole set.
Being a fan of the film since childhood, I couldn't imagine not having both. Personally, both restorations have things that I love, and I'm so happy to say I own both copies.
Sure, I can. I'm no expert, so I can't speak in technical terms. Quite simply, it's this. The Dark Sky release has a grunge to it. Kinda like a Grindhouse film. Dirty and scratched film look. Which I love and remind me of the original film. The Second Sight release is far from polished but looks a lot cleaner. The colors really pop, and the image looks brighter. Both copies are fantastic, and you can't go wrong with either. It just depends on what kind of picture or style you like to see. Second Sight releases are always the master restoration in my own personal opinion. I hope that helps, even if very little lol.
I have both the Dark Sky and Second Sight releases (received the latter this morning from a collector at a very fair price, still in its shrink wrap too!) definitely prefer the Second Sight set in terms of extras, transfer and sexy packaging. Beyond thrilled to have this alongside the rest of my ever expanding collection of Second Sight releases!❤
Thank you, finally a review that doesn't try to make those two releases look equal overall. Sure, one can be happy with the Dark Skys release (or the last Turbine one for that matter) but Second Sight is on another level and I think it's important to be clear about that.
Amazing video! I own both Dark Sky releases (Steelbook and Standard with slipcase) and the Second Sight! It’s also one of my Favorite Films, so I had to get all the versions! Haha I own the Film on DVD in about 15+ versions. I have fond memories of watching it as a kid in my uncles van on VHS! My parents along with my uncle, aunt and cousin would take road trips from NYC to Florida. So the kids were in the back watching tv. We ALWAYS put on TCM everytime! GREAT MEMORIES!
I actually own a italian release of TCM that was released like 2 years ago. A 4K. I will grt the Second Sight in a bit and it will be very kntresting to see the differenses. Thanks for a good comparison vid!👍
My Second Sight just arrived today, I've also owned this on every format from boot leg VHS to now, but I think the buck stops here, I can't see another edition getting any better. Another great video as usual.
I'm glad you included screen shots comparing the two, I watched another comparison video and without the images the video seemed pointless, this is a much better way of doing a comparison video in my opinion. It looks like I'll have to buy both of these versions since I already own the Dark Sky version but the Second Sight one sounds like it's better and I do love this movie.
I was thinking about getting the TCM Dark Sky release but decided to wait because Second Sight has a good reputation at this point when it comes to 4K releases. Seeing reviews and reading comparisons on forums of the two releases the Second Sight release has the better 4K transfer.
awesome review! i only watched 1/2 The Second Sight 4k imo it looks close to perfect (It’s the best home video version to watch besides the Elite Laserdisc which i have loved the last 20+ years) the Laserdisc is better then the vhs & dvd version imo (Second Sight has proven time and time again they are one of the Premier Mom & pop distributor in the UK
Second Sight is my number one company when it comes to physical media, they knock everything out the park. I didn’t get the Dark Sky release, I have the Second Sight deluxe set and the previous 4K HDR set from Turbine.
@@naturallawman2965 I have more Turbine Blu-rays than Second Sight but I would say that is due to Turbine releasing more content. Turbine is very good but some of their releases do fall short in head to head comparisons. The Arrow version of Werewolf in London was better but in terms of bells and whistles Turbine’s Werewolf is a tremendous package. Second Sight is able to provide excellent transfers with excellent packaging.
I also ended up buying both versions but I'm actually very happy with dark sky release and i probably keep second sight box set sealed and store it as collectible item.
I have Turbines, Dark Sky’s and Second Sights release of TCM on 4K Second Sight’s transfer is the best in my opinion. The packaging is on another level also.
Texas chainsaw massacre is my favorite horror film so i got both the dark skys and the second sight standard 4k release and i like the second sight version better.
Great video, as always. I agree that the Second Sight looks better, but the Friedkin/Hooper interview is a surprisingly substantial bonus. I thought the new documentary, on the other hand, was absolutely terrible. (They really tried to make Leatherface a trans icon. For God’s sake, people, give it a rest!) In general, I’m sick of talking-head docs where Gen Y mediocrities share freezing cold takes and stale trivia about classic movies. Get film scholars/critics in there, along with people who were part of the production. Nobody needs to hear that the 24-year-old director of some straight-to-Shudder slasher believes that Texas Chainsaw is “an important movie.” I enjoyed In Search of Darkness III, but it’s starting to edge on that category: people who know less than the viewers offering obvious or dumb takes. (Compare that with Severin’s documentaries and commentaries, which are like b-movie film school.) Anyway: Texas Chainsaw (or “Chain Saw,” I guess) rules.
This is the comparison I’ve been waiting for. I bought the dark sky and thought it would be fine. I saw the issues you pointed out, but your comparison photos make the second sight look so much better. Might have to double dip.
When companies do this it makes me a little crazy. Many thanks Richard! Have a great weekend!

Haven't compared my 40th and Second Sight so didn't know of these missing pieces. Thanks for the info.
Such an amazing breakdown of tcm and how it was shot. Great work yet again good sir!
Excelent comparison!!! Thanks soooo much. Have the Second Sight on pre-order.
Would you say the Second Sight transfer is as close to perfection as we are ever likely to get for this film?
It's looks better than original film. I saw it in theater back in the day. Wasn't looking as good as Second Sight.

@@princesmith8008 I personally went with Second Sight. Looks great on OLED screen.

Thanks for the comparison been waiting to see how good the transfer looks and today's My birthday
Hope you had a great birthday!

Can you explain your pros and cons for each version?
Sure, I can. I'm no expert, so I can't speak in technical terms. Quite simply, it's this. The Dark Sky release has a grunge to it. Kinda like a Grindhouse film. Dirty and scratched film look. Which I love and remind me of the original film.

Thank you for your great detailed reviews! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦♥️♥️
Great video... obviously a big fan of the film. So, do you think these will be the last physical release of Texas Chainsaw?

Great comparison Richard I want both
My first viewing of this film was on a CED Videodisc. Yep, I'm that old.
This is a great video- thank you!
Great informative video. I ended up buying both versions 😄
I've owned this film on VHS, DVD, Blu Ray and now 4k. Its been an education!!
I actually own a italian release of TCM that was released like 2 years ago. A 4K.
I will grt the Second Sight in a bit and it will be very kntresting to see the differenses.
Thanks for a good comparison vid!👍
I think I will go with the William Friedkin interview on the Dark Sky edition.
Second Sight it is!!!
The Second Sight release is perfection.
My Second Sight just arrived today, I've also owned this on every format from boot leg VHS to now, but I think the buck stops here, I can't see another edition getting any better. Another great video as usual.
Second Sight limited editions are beautiful- both the transfers and of course the presentation packaging.

I'm super impressed with the Second Sight release! Blows the 40th Blu Ray out of the water on the video and audio front
How does the Turbine 4k compare to those?
My opinion is it’s good probably equal to Dark Sky’s review. Second Sights is the best of the three.
Texas chainsaw massacre is my favorite horror film so i got both the dark skys and the second sight standard 4k release and i like the second sight version better.
Second sight screwed up the color grade and removed too much grain. Dark Sky's release is closer to Hoopers vision.
Great video, as always.
I agree that the Second Sight looks better, but the Friedkin/Hooper interview is a surprisingly substantial bonus.

What do you mean by trans icon?
@@robomnemonic3751Leatherface is technically a trans/crossdresser/etc character lol.
looks like the color grading is different as well
Yes, the Second Sight looks less oversaturated and more natural while also having superior contrast.
Does anyone have the Turbine (German) release? And if so, what do u think of it?
I do it’s probably about the same as Dark Sky’s transfer.
