    Love the shortcuts for selecting modulation sources. In this example, you still have two envelopes available for modulating the noise level for example, plus lots of other sources to play with for making new expressive sounds. Blows the original Juno series away really, and so much cheaper. My local music shop was selling the Juno 6 for £799 in the 80s. That was a lot of coin in today's money. Very impressed by this instrument.

      The menu diving doesn't even seem that bad on the Deepmind. Maybe that's cause I've programmed on a lot of late 80s and 90s rack synths though lol

    great video..... I loved it when you just played the resonance on the filter, I never actually knew that could be done. I'd use that patch at a breakdown with masses of reverb and stereo delay. I'd then want a repeated sequence with that patch that i could just improvise over for hours. I've not had a good day today but this video has somewhat brightened it up slightly thank you.

    Really appreciate it, to see you do a patch from scratch. I've been very temptated to buy the deepmind12 from the start when the audio-examples where coming up. That patch sounded great, Nick, and thanks for the extra video (and thanks to everyone behind the scenes)! I think Behringer hit it outta the park with the Deepmind, looks awesome.
    I don't really understand the aversion to the edit pages, either. They don't seem hard to use, and it's not like one needs to go deep into them to get to the desired parameter. And if Behringer only included parameters they could fit on the front panel, the Deepmind would have much fewer features, and be less flexible and versatile. Would those people really want that? Just so there's no edit pages? I appreciate those extra features.
    And I think it sounds good! - Especially with the multiple unison modes with detune (right on the front panel!). That filter is definitely nice, too.
    Sorry for the long comment, heh. If anyone reads this, thanks to Nick and everyone else who make these videos happen. Fantastic content.

  • @Zinfidel1
    @Zinfidel1 5 років тому +5

    Myself and others were wrong about Behringer. They aren't perfect but here's the thing... None of the other synth companies are perfect. None.
    I really like my DM6. The way it sits there and doesn't take up much room but has so much sound potential! It's hefty. Its sound design capabilities are quick. The FX are powerful. And yet, there are still people that never owned one and feel capable of judging it harshly. Seriously. People judge Behringer synths much harsher than the others. Behringer could have proved them right had they taken the easy route. But they did not.
    They came into the scene as music muckrakers but they asked synth heads what they wanted, how they wanted it, and provided it without being greedy. People should be rooting for Behringer. They exposed just how ridiculous the prices of synths can be and we might not have questioned prices accurately. Sure, not every company has Behringer's manufacturing resources but some do! These are the companies that needed a good kick in the pants and Behringer obliged.
    Now it's time for these others to evolve or Behringer will leave them in the dust. Thanks Uli, Midas, and the entire Music Tribe group. Their sincerity is now obvious and i'm excited to see what they will do next.

    Hello, I've been studying this synth for a while now and seriously interested in getting one, only question I have that no one can answer yet is if I can do microtuning on it? That is tuning individual keys to quarter notes! To be able to play middle eastern microtonal scales. If not is there any trick to do that? Thanks!

I love the Jupiter 8 sounds and I'm looking for something that produces those nice analog sounds. Currently, I'm considering the following: (1) Deepmind 12 (2) Roland System 8 or (3) purchasing the three Roland JP-08, JU-06 and JX-03 with an Arturia Keystep.
    Out of those 3, which would be my best choice? What are the pros and cons of each?

    Honestly this almost makes me want one in spite of it's brand name. As I've mentioned before I've gotten some pretty shoddy gear from Behringer. You yourself have noted that it's kind of squishy in places where it shouldn;t be. While they say they plan to shore it up internally, it wouldn't shock me if they didn't. I won't argue that it sounds fantastic because it does. My concern is reliability down the road for a high dollar item like this one.

      @TheJonHolstein 8 років тому

      Yeah, it's a bit worrying. Quick fixes can include gluing, and that not only gets lose over time, there have been glues that has erroded plastic and or metal, so that a product actually breaks down because of the glue.

      Jon Holstein: I got a pair of Behringer VP2025 mains cabinets which had a misplaced bass port. They had filled in the gap left from the miscut with hot glue. It melted leaving a gap which sounded horrible. Apparently they hadn't considered the fact that the cabinets might be used out side in hot weather.

      Yeah, the issues I had were that I could not get the self oscillation to sound anywhere near as good as the deepmind. Since it was very obvious that it was a digital audio source, so anything I tried to build on top of that had a very very different sound to the one in this video. In general much more crunchy and digital, which is to be expected from the mininova I guess.

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube 6 років тому

      All I have is the manual, so...
      It looks like you need to go into the VOICE PARAMETERS menu, and change the Polyphony mode, e.g. to POLY.
      There's also a category, which seems to be just a tag that's applied to each patch. One of the categories is Mono, so you probably want to change that too, to make the patch easier to find again - then save it (WRITE button).
      The category is set in the PROG (Programming Menu), and appears near the top left hand corner, just below the patch number.

      Nick said it wasn't bad.
      But this is not the final version, so he didn't know if it was the final units keyboard.
      But people have different preferences when it comes to keys.
      And this keyboard is kind of limited in range.
      Get yourself a good keyboard, at a good size for you. Hopefully you can find one that has some usefull real-time controls (faders and encoders that are not endless should almost be overlooked, as they can be hopless to use when playing, if they are in the wrong place when you call up a patch, but if the keyboard comes with other interesting controls, it can have those as well).
      Make sure it has Midi ports, and not only USB. (both is best, and USB host as well would be even better, but the most important thing is standard Midi-ports)
      Then you will have great keys to play no matter what synths you get.
      It's mostly a good investment, if you find keys you really like, they will probably feel more right to you than most of what hardware synths come with.

    Hi!
    I need help..
    i tried to do a patch from scratch, using nothing but the resonance and the frequency from the filter at the beginning. Just like in this video. But it seems like the pitch of the filter is moving up and down (in dissonance.) Each time i press a key on my keyboard the tone of the filter is different. It doesn't KYBD-slider is all the way up. In this video i think the tone of each key is always the same. Is my the filter of my deepmind broken or something? I thougt that maybe some detuning on the Keyboard would be the reason for this, but the pitch of my filter is shifting even when i'm using my Laptop as MidiController, too. Please help..
    Greetings!

    in 1:05 where I'm left only with the filter, I play notes and they seem to be out of tune. like randomly out of tune. anybody knows the reason why?

      Calibration, the filters are analogue so will require occasional calibration. There is an item in the system menu as far as I recall.

    I must say it really sounds good, but that the mod matrix is only accessable via display/edit buttons is a dealbreaker for me. I prefer my Prophet 6 UI.

    Thanks for this further demo Nick. However, for me, I think you merely confirmed its a computer with a keyboard strapped to it. Like Ty Unwin, I continue to remain unimpressed.

    • @GreenHoleSun
      @GreenHoleSun 8 років тому

      Herr Absurd why?
      you can dislike this synth (I am too still not completely convinced) but this is very far from "a computer with a strapped keyboard".
      The Korg Kronos is a computer with a keyboard (at it can produce wonderful sounds nevertheless), this deepsynth is abolutely not.

    • @TheJonHolstein
      @TheJonHolstein 8 років тому

      A computer with analog OSCs and analog filters, in that case.
      The sound may not be the most inspiring, and you can probably get warmer sounds from some VSTs, especially if you loop them out through some analog saturation gear (effects, or pre-amps).
      And with something like the Kontrol S49, and a mouse and keyboard, you can have a more intuative interface.
      But that doesn't somehow turn this thing in to a computer.

    • @dionysiaex5538
      @dionysiaex5538 8 років тому

      We agree to disagree. This essentially is a computer controlling an analog synth - as are many analog synths today. Compare the Arp Odyssey which is much less so (not even any patch memory in that one). The oscillator section here is basic (as was the Juno 106, my first synth) and they seem to have concentrated more on mod matrixes, virtual reality interfaces and ipad apps. But I just can't be doing with screens and menus. I also note that some of those with access to the really pricey synths say this synth is good FOR THE PRICE which is damning with faint praise. I think the hype needs to be dialled back. Good but not THE BEST SYNTH OF ALL TIME EVAR!!!

    • @TheJonHolstein
      @TheJonHolstein 8 років тому +1

      Even the original Juno had an OS, so did the Prophet 5, they had to, otherwise they could not have had memories in the way they did. The CD-80 memories worked in a different way.
      Calling an OS for a computer is not fair, and it's very irrelevant. if you had a computer controlling a analog synth, it would still be the analog synth that is sounding, and not the computer.
      The mod matrix does a lot for sound.
      Don't you know what a mod matrix is?
      There have been analog mod matrixes as well. But when they are handled digitally they can be made more versatile.
      The korg arp and MS-20 lives on an old hype.
      They are quite basic synths, really. But people liked the originals and have been hyping them, to keep prices inflated on the second hand market. Had not the digital synth era happend, and the synths would have continued to be analog or analog had it's own market side by side with digital. No one would have been so excited by those synths today. They would have been relics.
      In todays market, computers and iPads are things that people use in their music production, and the technolgoy and development for those things are not expensive compared to the rest of the synth.
      Without those features, they would lose some of their potential market.
      MS-20 and Korg Arp, can't be properly integrated to a modern studio.
      A lot of people wish they had better integraton.
      The VR interface is a marketing trick, for sure.
      But that money probably comes out of their marketing budget.
      In todays world it's harder to get trhough the buzz, not enough people read and trust music magazines. They need to be noticed in other ways.
      Why do you put your trust in people that have a lot of gear that cost a lot more but don't do a lot more. Are you sure they aren't just trying to justify the purchases they have made, for themselves.
      Some have synths that don't sound wamer than this one, but still think since their synth is old and could be considered a classic, it therefor has to be better. Again those synths from the 80s that didn't sound any wamer would also have been consiedered relics, if it had not been for the digital synths that completely took over market.
      Whoever has claimed this the best synth of all time?
      I don't think even Behringer has tried hype it up to be.
      It has rather basic oscs, and they are modern, and so are the filters and the rest of the signal path, so it will have a much less distortion and instabilities than a lot of the classic synths.
      But that is something that synth fans has to start to accept. Modernly produced synths, will be better and more stable, with cleaner signal. It has features for instroducing some instabilities to the sound.
      No synth has been best of everything, not even the CS80. Not even the Schmidt.
      Is it better than a much cheaper VST. In most ways, probably not.
      But as a hardware it's better than a lot of things out there. And it doesnt break as much as 30-45 year old synths that you get off e-bay.
      Will there be better synths in the future. Most likely. Are there other synths already that are better? Not for the price.
      Is this one worse than any more expensive synth out there? absolutely not.

    • @dionysiaex5538
      @dionysiaex5538 8 років тому

      Jon Holstein The Juno 106 had DCO's and patch memory. Hardly anything worth being called an "OS". I know because I owned one. It was the first synth I ever played. And, yes, the MS20 and Arp Odyssey are quite basic synths. I see that as a HUGE virtue. With those synths its just you and the voltage. Beautiful. This Deepmind is now being hyped as the second coming of synthesis which is silly. It features menu-diving, an instant turn off. I wish the basic synth was better. I can do without menus, ipad apps and augmented reality thanks.
