Not only was this a F4 in Maryland, this tornado was moving nearly a mile a minute (96.5 km/h), during its passage through La Plata; which is basically unheard of, even for the most tornado prone areas... but that's not it! "Around the same time, damage and eyewitness accounts indicate that a second tornado formed a quarter of a mile south of the primary tornado. Just within a few minutes, both tornadoes crossed the heart of La Plata between 7:02 pm and 7:07 pm" The 2nd tornado, peaked at F2 intensity. - and that's not it, over half of the emergency alert systems (EAS) failed during the event too... - - - So not only was this twister a F4 along the eastern seaboard, it had one of the faster accepted forward speeds on record, a second tornado hitting the same town (La Plata) at the same time, but was a long track tornado too, and so much more... Truly a weather phenomenon, or is it; this is not the first major tornado (F3/EF3 or greater) to strike La Plata, nor the deadliest... In 1926, a F3/F4 struck the town, killing over a dozen school children and 4 more townspeople! Around 17 in total. Now while it's unlikely that a 3rd, EF3 or greater tornado would strike the town again, this area seems very prone to them. Thankfully, ever since the 2002 tornado, La Plata has since installed sirens, and we're much more prepared with newer technology! But wow, the 2002 La Plata tornado, was truly something else...
No it was a ef5 wind speed was 261- 318mph definitely one to go down in history in this date we havent had any that big sinces then but i have a bad feeling Maryland gonna get a another monster in tge near future
It happens. It's rare but it happens. I live in Maryland and I was born in Connecticut. When I was 2 years old there was a tornado outbreak in Connecticut and other states. 17 tornadoes Altogether and one of them in Connecticut was an F4. Tornadoes can happen anywhere at anytime. It's just uncommon for them to be that intense on this side of the country.
My father was an Emergency Department Nurse at the old Civista that night, lets just say he got very lucky. I will never forget that night a week or two after my nineteenth birthday.
Tornadoes ripped through New England when I was 2 years old. I don't remember it obviously but that's not normal. Only one person died but she was only 14 and a tree fell on her tent when she was camping 😢
A true blessing that no one was killed… a gift from above. It’s times like these we are truly grateful. People gathering to support is an act of Charity… a gift of Love 💗

I lived there.. it was not an EF-5. It was classed that at first but then it was downgraded to strong EF-4.

Crazy I watch this and now I live in this town I pray this never happens again ❤🙏✝️ this was a big tornado
Is there a version of this video without music? It is hard to hear the dialogue.
I was born in this town in 2006, crazy that I barely missed it and lived my life without even knowing this happened here for years

She said "Mike Tackish". I miss you, friend. God rest your soul.
I've visited La Plata many times and have never seen this memorial.

Five people did sadly pass. They are represented in the five benches in the memorial garden, mentioned around minute 18 in this video.

This tornado completely destroyed my elementary school. Archbishop Neale. Class Of 1987.
If you haven't seen it, here is a short documentary about Archbishop Neale School and the tornado

@@CCGTVCommissioners I have seen the video. I am, in fact, in the video. I have now commented on it as well.
Maryland's worst tornado. Imagine how bad it would've been if this had happened in PG County/Baltimore which are heavily populated.
Another Joplin
Was The Walmart In La Plata Around In 2002?
yes
Yes. My friend was waiting for her mother to pick her up from there after her shift. It took them four hours to get to their home in Charlotte Hall.
I've heard people there say the tornado was the best thing that happened to La Plata.
😂 I never heard of La Plata until I heard this and I live in Maryland.
