- 1980 never looked this good! This 1980 Volvo 262C Bertone is one cherry car. Bug Ninja, AKA: Volvo expert, makes a special guest appearance. CAR WIZARD 🧙♂️ is shocked how much this car shares parts and designs with other cars of that era, and a little talking about the Ferrari 348 engine too.

Yes He Is. I Was glad to hear some history on the Volvo
Adrian? That name has no meaning to me, (anymore) it's The Bug Ninja
@@MazichMusicqqq+
What a beautiful Volvo. I have only seen those in pictures and now in video.
Adrian is fantastic!! Thanks for your input, Adrian!
So nice to see a real Volvo. The easiest part of the engine to work on was the oil pan.
That PRV V6 saw use in over 40 different cars. Also saw some use in racing, as well.
I saw one of those when I was a teenager. I thought the low roofline was cool. Second coolest Volvo behind the P1800 cars.
still have the tools. ground on the CPR gets bad. mounts for the fuel distributor go and the body pulls off the boot. Clean the fuse ends and grease and away you go for a decade. and greaseable door hinges
Do I see an old Buick convertible in the background? I didn't think you would work on cars this old.
“Supposed to be V8”, that’s why Delorean used this engine. He would have had it built out rebuilt as his co grew, if it had. Thanks for the discussion.
No Delorean first thought of a V6 Ford engine. Then they choose the a Citroen l4 engine with the complete drive train. More relaible, but that engine was underpowered. So they had thoughts of putting a turbo on the Citroen engine. When Citroen heard of it, they recommended to search for another engine. That is how they came to the PRV.
My treasured 98 Volvo s70 got flooded by hurricane Ian. It's still sitting in my driveway, and I wash it. ? Duh. Somethings are hard to part with. But she's toast. So sad.
8:48 Two oil temp gauges ??🤔
Luv the Bug Ninja. You should have him stop by more often.
Agreed!
Cool guy!
Love having the bug ninja show up. So soft spoken and knowledgeable on the history and heritage of that niche era of cars.
I could listen to Adrian all day long. His voice, knowledge and stories are all fantastic.
Adrian was a great guest. Really enjoyed hearing him speak, calming and informative.
My name dwayne johnson I have volvo 1980 Brotontone Coupes 2 door
As a Swedish Volvo fan im getting almost excited seeing this car! WOW!!!!!!! If you need parts i think we have alot here i Sweden but also hard to get cheap tho ;) Big greetings from Sweden! :)
I have to get off my butt and get back into volvos, I've been wanting another turbo 745 or 945 for over a decade, and I'd love a 245 also (my first car). I had about 9 rwd volvos (all fixed and sold to buy another) by the time I was 21.
@@volvo09 Would have been fun to own a nice 240 Turbo but they are old cars now and pretty expensive if they are in good shape. But i rarely even see any 940 or 740 on the road, to see a nice 240 is rare nowadays even here in Sweden there Volvo is common as hell. We can see them but they are often a 16-18 year old persons first car and often trashed examples. Not nice originals.
That is sharp. What a shame that a dealer shop would turn it down. Makes them just look dumb or bad. Lambda makes me think of Revenge of the Nerds frat Lambda Lambda Lambda.
Lambda in Latin the broken one. Kinda fitting .

Bring a 94 mazda B3000 to a Mazda dealer (it's a Ford ranger) and see how much specialized service you can get... no one is used to it at the dealer, and it's old, so that adds another layer.
I don't blame the dealer for not wanting to touch it, that engine was very rare and if someone is proficient in it they won't be working at a dealer where 1 car may show up in 5 years, they'll be at a specialist shop, or own their own shop.
VOLVO is now Chinese owned. Hopefully the quality remains high but China is not really known for their commitment to the environment.
The trinity of Italian design: Pininfarina, Ghia and Bertone. Many US Concept Cars were done by or influenced by these design firms and they still exist. And of course if you think Italian Supercar - you are talking about their heritage. Find their websites. Each has a Gallery page - just stunning and inspiring designs.
In Finland ALL oxygen sensors are colloquially called Lambda sensors (Lambda-anturi) or just Lambdas.
Yep.
Yes and in the land of your superior brother sweden we also say lambdasond. (I am half finish btw ;) )
The v6 was meant to be a v8, but then the oil crisis came in the 70s, and so they had to save money and made the v6 instead
Is that V6 the PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) engine?
@@miguell1018 Yup
The even changed the V8 to a V6 by chopping off 2 cilinders: the result is a 90 degree V6, wicht is not a standaard angle.
@@miguell1018 This is the same mill used by DeLorean. DeLorean realized to develop a new engine would take at least 10 years to pass inspection, let alone the international market. So DeLorean took the Volvo (and others) designed powerplant with approved pollution standards and used it in order to speed up production because he was purely living on credit and needed to make money.
@@pierrebrouwer2183 Yes, the ideal angle for a V6 is 60 degrees - not 90.
This is the PRV V6 engine, and was developed by Volvo, Renault and Peugeot. It came in several versions from 2.5 to 3.0 liters. They are NOT rare, other than maybe in US. They where produced from 1974 to 1998! Total production numbers was over 970000 units! Used in Volvo 260, 760, 780, 960 and Peugeot 504, 505, 604, 605 and Renault 25, 30, Alpine, Citroen XM, DeLorean among others
not rare but not great. Europeans can somehow still manage to make things expensive even with they have economy of scale on their side. This car would be a good candidate for a 5.0 Ford swap. The Ford V8 is narrow enough to fit very well in these.
Cool video and great to see obscure european cars. As a swede I've seen these through the years but not too many. The top mounted gauge cluster is some third party junk put there by a previous owner, it was not there from the factory.
It doesn't look bad though almost looks factory
Correct! NOT a Volvo option.
Changed the 8 to 6 cilinders because of the fuel crisis. The 90° V shape of the cilinder Banks still refer to the original 8 cilinder design
It is a Renault engine
I love the large single-purpose light-up switches in old European cars.
Unfortunately, all petrol cars will soon be banned in the EU and the USA! In France there is a new law prohibiting combustion engine cars called SCHLABOUBVE and in Switzerland the HESCHLAVVO law! In the Scandinavian countries there will soon be a so-called SMORVERBIDEN law) for Germany there will probably be a federal exhaust gas ban ordinance from 2027.

Always a good day win Bug Ninja drops by, and gives such cool history on these old Volvos!
I had a Volvo just like that with a diesel engine ,that was one hell of a well built car .
the gas ones in the states were garbage expensive and unreliable used to see these on the roads here in California where they dont rust, they break down though, while better volvos are still on the road
If it was a diesel that was nothing original... The Volvo 262, 264, 265 and 262C never had a diesel engine. Only 240 models.
@@darkiee69 probably , I traded it in for a brand new 86 Pontiac persiana .

Refreshing to hear an intelligent individual share that much knowledge in such a short time. He's great.
I remember Fiat used Bertone quite a bit especially for the Fiat X19 Bertone.
The Fiat X1/9 is a two-seater mid-engined sports car designed by Bertone and manufactured by Fiat from 1972-1982
Cadillac sending out the Allante is very famous example of "sending out " a car to be "Italianized"
Made famous by Kelly Bundy, and the "Bundy Bounce". 😁❤
Volvo back in this time was putting more paint on their cars than any other manufacturer apart from Rolls Royce
That's nonsense. All Euro manufacturers used that much paint.
B280F (2.8 Liter) replaced the older PRV V6 engines and was used in the 780 Bertones along with the B230FT. The B280F is a much improved engine, smooth & very reliable I sold my 1988 780 Bertone w/ over 260K Miles.
780s are nice!
I remember a Volvo technician proudly showing me how smooth and quiet the B280F engine was in a then new 780 Bertone that was undergoing its pre-delivery inspection at the dealership. The only engine noise you could hear was the injectors opening and closing!
Do you ever regret selling it? I would think the 780 Bertone would be a collectors item.
Wasn't the B280F an updated PRV ?
@@Homme_Pur Pretty much.
The Bug Ninja is a nice and has great knowledge. Good to see him again
Every time you both said 240, my brain keeps correcting 260, hahah. As volvo sold a 4 door version of the 264 that looked normal unlike the 262c.
That dash pod is aftermarket, not by bertone.
I had a 242 with 262c interior years ago. Except mine had a b234f 2.3 16v from a later 740 and dogleg box from bmw 535i in it.
The b27f in that is an odd fire disaster. But volvo improved it over time to the even fire b280e with nearly 180hp. Until the modular inline 6 took over around 1990.
Renault developed it further in the early 90s peaking at 3.0 bi-turbo with 254hp in there French Market safrane hatchback with 4wd
Venturi pushed that version even more to about 400hp before people stopped using it around 1998.
I remember being told by my Volvo technician in the late '70's that the Renault F1 racing team used that same engine in their cars at the time and got 600hp out of it. Impressive - if true.
I remember in 80s at my country , most of police cars were Volvo and were very distinguishable 😅😅
Always a great day when Bug Ninja stops by….unique and beautiful car…..
Great Video...! You never disappoint. Love the Volvo's . Your guest was very knowledgeable. Loved the details he revealed about the car. Just a Great story on this model. I've never seen one. Thanks for the view.
Wow and in sweden a distributor cap for that engine costs about 20$ and the rotor 15$ 😮
ha ha was just about to write that, 185sek and 135sek 😂😂
An interesting car to learn about, but I definitely prefer the normal Volvo roofline to this. Great to have Bug Ninja share his knowledge again!
This guy inknew had a silver and black 262 with black leather and a 4speed manual with electronic overdrive. Very unique car. Young guy had it until it was vandalized and he could never get the money to replace the glass.
PRV engine was also in Renault 25, 30, Peugeot 504 coupe, 604, 605, Citroën XM, Xantia, Alpine A 310, A610, Venturi cars,...
And Delorean
thanks for bringing in an expert, wizard. I appreciate it
Loved these 262C's when they first came out. Love them still. So cool for a Volvo.
Adrian is an awesome guest host!
Upper class, stylish brick.
I don't think Bertone improved the shape over the saloon - the top looks like it doesn't belong. I certainly liked my 760 Estate, it was one of the last V6 engined cars, I had it 12 years and I believe it's still going.
I love that when wizard gets a rare spectacle, he is humble enough to let a more knowledgeable individual come aboard So that we can get all the fulfillment and wealth of knowledge From someone more experienced with the vehicle than him, Instead of being a know it all.. thank you,,
Take a good look at the engine block for coolant corrosion from the inside out. We replaced two garage queen engines for this problem. The block walls around the coolant passage areas are very thin.
Volvo even recommended added an anti-corrosive to the coolant to help avoid that corrosion. It was right in my owner's manual.
Here in the UK, i loved these when they came out. They had a black vinyl roof from factory and looked great in silver. That horrendous pod on the dash was not factory 😮
Yes, definitely an aftermarket add-on! Yuck!
Actually the PRV was in use right up to 1997, with the final 3.0 24v version being used in the Peugeot 605 car. In that form it made just over 200bhp and is a common swap for Delorean's.
Long ago in 92 I worked at the Albertville Winder Olympics. One of the people at the hotel drove a 605 and it was a very nice car that we never saw here in the US. The car was a nice light green metallic color. Thanks for a interesting video featuring Adrian.
@@dl242tiPeugeot was actually planning to bring the 605 to the U.S. as a 1992 model, but they quit the U.S. before going ahead. I always loved (and still do) the Pininfarina styling of this sedan and would somehow like to get my hands on one 💯
Sorry this is not strange, this is one of the most legendary volvos ;-) Greeting from europe ....

The Eagle Premier was another car you'd see in America with this PRV engine -- it was the optional V6 available instead of the standard AMC 2.5L 4 cylinder. It was the 3.0L variant, not the 2.7, but still -- same engine. It was a leftover from when AMC and Renault partnered up in the '80s, and the car remained in production for a few years after Chrysler bought AMC. Until 1992, I believe.
An american counterpart for the Renault 25
Same vehicle was rebadged as the Dodge Monaco, which the Intrepid replaced in 1992 (the Premier was replaced by the Vision). And the Peugeot 505, which we did get here in the U.S., had the PRV V6, even in the U.S.! So yes, the American-model 505 had this V6 too.
And, the Renault Alpine had the PRV V6 as well, and also had a turbo. Those turbo'd PRV V6s were also used in what was the French answer to the Lotus Esprit, the MVS Venturi
That’s the only , VOLVO i’m looking for . lovely car.
Bug Ninja is the best car story teller in all of UA-cam. Could listen for weeks to him.
Actually here in Germany it is total common to speak about the 'Lamda Sonde' in the car mechanic world. Never heard anything else like 'Sauerstoff Sensor' which means 'oxygene sensor'.
You mentioned the De Lorean with the same 2.7 V6 'europe engine'. The De Lorean was desinged by Giorgio Giugiaro, who was in the 60's chef designer at Bertone.
A fantastic car! I remember them well! Not seen one in decades!
The PRV engine were used until 1990 in the 760 and 780 (but in a updated 2.8L version) before the 960 came with volvos own straight six
Peugeot 604 also.
At 16:25 the B27 was in use from 1975-80, then then made some minor changes to it and called it B28 because it had bigger bore and was in use in the 240/260 1980-81 and Volvo 760 1982-86, then they rebuilt the concept with several big changes for the better and called it B280 and it was in Volvo 780 and Volvo 760 from 1987 to the end of the era in 1991. Alsoyou could get the B27 in the Volvo 240 GLT6 1980-81 and the 760 with both six cylinder VW 2,4 liter diesel D24T engine and B23 Turbo. The Volvo 780 was also available with the four cylinder Volvo red block turbo engine and the VW 2,4 liter diesel D24T engine. Also the B280 is a very much better engine compared to the B27 and B28. Thanks...
Great to see Adrian back in the shop 👍 a mine of automotive information always gives amazing insights in to the car world hopefully he will be dropping by as the work on the 348 progress 👌
The 262C design was done in-house by Jan Wilsgard.
Bertone only build the car, as Bertone was very happy to point out.,.. You could get the whole Volvo Range with the V6; a 262 (no "C" high top even rarer as the Bertone), a 264 Limo an a 265 Wagon.
...you're supposed to take the INTAKE OFF to change the distributor on a PRV! That's why they keep breaking the caps. You DON'T change these caps with the intake on... As well, these engines have a high failure rate in the radiator hoses that run INSIDE the valley along the distributor. When you take the intake off to do the cap it gives you the opportunity to catch these leaking hoses.
My first car was a 1979 264gl. I totally forgot about taking the intake bolts loose to have the clearance needed to change the cap.
Great video!
Always awesome when the Bug Ninja shows up at Omega! He has such a wealth of knowledge about cars! Love it!
Check the end play on the distributor shaft. I had one that had about 3/4” end play and would break the rotor on deceleration.
Volvo then isn’t as bad as it is now
Chinese is now owned by Volvo if my memory is serving me correctly.
I worked in a Volvo dealership when that car was new. I remember the cams on the 6 cylinder engines being a big warranty problem. To get the cam out of the left bank you had to remove it from the block, until one mechanic had the bright idea to punch a big hole in the firewall and remove it into the interior. Saved a lot of time. Had a bunch of big rubber plugs in stock.
I started at the local independent Volvo shop in Aug 1982 and I remember that. Volvo North America approved using a hole saw to cut a hole behind the cylinder heads to pass the camshafts through, and sealing it with a rubber plug when done. It was much less costly to Volvo than pulling the heads. I wound up doing several camshaft/rocker sets that were out of warranty during my first few years there.
Stinky PRV V6......Otherwise Awesome Car.
I think that center gauge cluster isn't factory, but aftermarket IPD
1988 is about right for last use of PRV. PRV also used in Peugeot 504 & 604
Another OLD car that you don’t work on 😅Good to see old stuff still getting in 😊
That's a Lincoln Mark V shown.
Adrian seems like a great guy! Car Wizard and Adrian aka the big man are great together!
I love Volvos. My first one was a 850. Always have a special place in my heart for them. Not sure I’d buy one now with all the reliability issues they seem to have now.
I love them rare as hens teeth , I've only ever seen one that was in about 1978 in the front of the reception office , at first I thought ugly as sin then walked around and thought it's got something , but I like AMC Gremlins LOL . PS it was gold too .
I've owned my '81 DeLorean with the 2.8L PRV V6 and the K-Jetronic Fuel Injection for 27 years. I've put nearly 100,000 miles on it and I have NEVER once had a single issue with either the engine or the fuel injection system. The only "engine" issue, if you want to call it that, I ever had was replacing the bearing in the AC belt idler pulley which I did myself for $12. My PRV has enough power to move the car sufficiently and has been ROCK SOLID reliable! EDIT: I have had to replace the clutch once at 19,000 miles, but that's not really an engine issue.
Same! But i'm only going on 4 years of ownership. Thing just goes
I've owned Volvo's since 1981. There are lots of parts available if you know where to look. Volvo has a special warehouse in Sweden where old NOS parts go for storage. It's called Genuine Classic Parts which it can be accessed online. The catalog is in Swedish and English. The parts go all the way back to the 1950's. Once the last part is sold that's it their gone. I've gotten trim parts for my 1997 960 through GCP.
What an informative video... I had no idea Volvo had made such a machine... this car is in amazing condition, must have been loved and garaged for its life!
Also check out the Volvo 780 Bertone... The 262C's successor. I think they are beautiful cars. Haven't seen many of these even in Sweden.
Great video! I really like these videos with random vehicals and a short history lesson, its all so intersting to me even though I know very little about cars.
Great guest Car Wizard, Thank you for the video and having The Volvo expert on. Also Thank you to Mrs Car Wizard for all the behind the seen details and work.
I had one of these, a 80 with 82bumpers and a B21ET(original 240 Turbo engine) with manual gear. I took it to the local Volvo dealer tfor them to check it so it was roadlegal. Could not find the mechanic I used or the customer reciever. Found them after 5 min outside looking at my car.
Those cars are extremely rare. Be glad you actually get to see one.
I remember looking at this when it was in the dealer showroom, and wondering:
"why would I get one of these instead of a BMW or another Porsche?"
Now I wonder why Volvo would make this at all... (IMHO, they are SOOOO conservative.)
Hey Wizard!
From the first time I saw a Volvo Bertone Coupe, I was in love with the design. I wanted one for years, but never found one I could afford. Now, you couldn't pay me to own one. Too many unique unobtainium parts! I'm retired now, but I was the last one at the shop I worked for who knew how to service the Volvos with the CI fuel system. (And later the B28/B280 with EFI and the front left mounted IGN Dist) I eventually got quite good at it, just in time for them to disapear from our client list. (Haha!)
Did you remove the Air Filter Box for clarity, or was it missing when the car arrived?
For reference I've included a list of the variants used in Volvo cars over the years. Courtesy of Wikipedia.
In the US I saw mostly "F" Variants, with an occasional "A" Variant inported from Canada. The only "E" Variants I saw were, if my memory serves, later EFI units. (it's easily been eight years since I last saw one.)
Cheers! GrayRaceCat, a.k.a. Brian

It is not a derivate of a 240. The donor car was a 264
The engine is the engine that was used in the DeLoreon BTTF car. Yes the PRV, Peugeot, Renault, Volvo.......
The cloth interior slur on European cars, is bs.
If you wanted cloth interiors on UK & European cars, you had to request it, all cars were vinyl\pleather for the basic cars, but mid level in top level had leather.
Cloth was usually cloth or vinyl or pleather, and the second seat in a van was an option upto the early 70's.
So your transit came with 1 seat only no shotgun person.
The turbo 4 cyl actually won the BTCC in the 80's built by Andy Rouse.
C I S fuel injection was particularly susceptible to fuel contamination damage. Doesn’t just plug up the grit actually chafed and changed the metering orifices. Many upscale farm and ranch owners drifted from Cadillac to European cars and filled the gas tank from their above ground tractor fuel tanks. Oops. The PRV had a basic physics design flaw which is 90* V angle V-6 and not splayed crank pins. Can’t be made to idle smooth. What happens when a committee is in charge of design.
One thing that should have been mentioned is that the 262C originated from the previous version 164 not from 240, while 262C was still under the prototyping. During that time it was planned to have V8 engine instead of V6. When the 262C production finally started 24X line was already launched, so the 262C got its outlook from it.
The Bosch Continuous Injection System (CIS) is very reliable, relativley easy to maintain and far superior to old tech carbys. The CIS and was used by numerous OEMs that included Mercedes, VW, Porsche, Ferrari, etc. It's not the fault of the CIS if a technician has little to no knoweledge of the system or isn't prepared to do some basic research on the system. Consequently, I consider it disingenuous when persons who should know better denegrate it.
Beautiful car. I love Volvos. With this body style all it needs is a modern Volvo engine. Gorgeous big body. I want it. ❤❤🫠🤑🤑🤪👍
awesome 80's rarity. The distributer cap looks just like the Alfa GTV6 cap. Is the ignition system Bosch?
Adrian is so good, so knowledgeable!
Love the 240 series Volvos but yeah that v-6 is crap, the Volvo 4 cyl in the normal 240’s were much better
The PRV isn't that underpowered in Euro spec, it's just the US versions. The GM 2,8 liter V6's were just as lame in US spec with all the emissions gear.
He MUST be the coolest guy to hang with, just an encyclopedic knowledge of automobiles. We are not worthy😮😮😮
Bug Ninja is correct by 1988 Nissan had the Maxima box shape to compete with that Volvo and Volvo had already moved on to the 740 and 760. But that Volvo was the hotness mobile in NYC. I had quite a friends that had them.
Not a big Volvo fan but have to say, the 240GL was one of the most reliable engines. Inline four banger with mechanical fuel injection.
That car is so ugly you have to appreciate it.
That slab side reminds me of the 80s Rolls-Royce. These bigger Volvos were moving up market and I wondered if the silver shadow was an influence.
These were fairly common on California in the old days. I seem to remember that they almost always came with a black vinyl top from the factory.
The first 2 years of production that was very true. However, by the '80 model year the vinyl top was gone.
Hey Wizard, when the Continental Mark lV was mentioned a picture of a Continental Mark V was shown!!! 😲

Bosch CIS fuel distributors can be rebuilt right here in the USA by CIS Flowtech in AL.
The 2nd digit is not always the number of cylinders (even tough in most cases it is). There are PRV V6 engined Volvo 244's and 245. There are also Volvo 360 models that all have a 4cyl (not in the US but all over the rest of the world). But the 2nd number as cylinder count was mostly true until 1982.
Last the PRV engine was used in a Volvo was the 760 (1982-90) and 960 (1991-92), in 960 Ambulance until 1992 on some markets (even tough most 960 used the inline6 B6304 at that time). The PRV was still in use in the 2000's in some Peugeots, Citroens and even Renaults as a 24valve 3,0L engine. There are A LOT of exotic cars with the PRV engine, racing models etc.
