This show does a great job adding “rules” to magic with causing a lot of restrictions at the same time. Love that y’all take the time to recognize that!
So a couple of things I love about this episode: 1. Genau is like "The barrier can't be broken by brute force" and Frieren is like "OK but I'm gonna use RESONANT HARMONICS," and then Genau is like "maybe I should have glanced even once at the attendance roster so I would've known a goddamn living legend was here." The show doesn't specifically say that's how she broke the barrier, but that type of barrier always has all these randomly swirling colors, and Frieren's spell forces those colors into bands of solid color. To me, that says resonant harmonics. The magical energies comprising the barrier can't handle being forced into that orderly structure, so the barrier just vibrates itself apart, and that to me is another great example of how SMART the magic system is in this universe. 2. Denken casting Throw Mage Hands makes perfect sense for a pragmatic mage like him. He knows that most mages are not physical fighters, so training in fisticuffs would serve him really well in the right situations. He's probably relatively jacked under those robes, for a dude pushing 80. So in a weird way, that scene is also really smart writing about the world of magic.
denken was the surprise character for me in this series, he looks like the typical old corrupted man. He was introduced to be an imperial mage so i was really expecting that direction but im pleasantly surprised how likeable he is.
I love the magic system, it has rules but they don't define whether a person will definitely win the fight. Frieren has already lost to mages with less mana, it all depends on compatibility, experience, luck and a thousand factors Love the reaction 💖
I like the sidenote about open and closed magic systems. Another comparison that comes to my mind immediately is D&D (extremely closed) vs Mage: the Ascension (as open as a system in a game can be; and I opened it up even further for my tables)
Spoiler: I've read the Denken arc, and it's pretty good. Not as mind-blowing as what comes after, but pretty good. Also, ending the season one one last bitter-sweet Himmel memory would be incredible, right?

Both these moments for Denken and Frieren are incredible - Matt

Would open/closed magic system be the same as hard/soft magic systems?
I think it's the same idea from my understanding - Matt
