the man is a legend. look at what he has accomplished!! this is what life is about. not money. doing what you love and over coming the obsticals. what an amazing man with thee best attitude. modern pro athletes can learn a ton from this man.
true, but still I tend to think that it was a mistake to let this man participate in the olympics. I am highly convinced that in 1988, there had been dozens of ski jumpers with better performances who had not been allowed to jump in Calgary. Even though I appreciate his attitude. olympic ski jumping can afford one Eddie, not two or three or sixteen.
+TheColinChapman He was allowed to participate because he was the only ski jumper from Great Britain in 1988. If you haven't seen the movie about him, then please watch it. He trained his whole life to be a down hill skier and was screwed out of his chance to go to the Olympics because of status.
+Darrel Curry seen it half a dozen times. He benefitted from the old rule that it was sufficient to be the british record holder in an olympic discipline. either way, I still tend to think that there had been more talented and more ambitious sportsmen who deserved more to participate in the olympics.
I have now watched all the videos I can find. All I wanna do now is fly to meet Eddie and shake his hand, what an absolutely positively genuine person. An inspiration to all.
When i watched that Olympics as a teenager, i was wishing i was him! No other athlete..But i also think about how much support he received from other athletes like the Austrian's and Swiss. There was a lot of love and humanity shown for Eddie.
+s4 dreamland at least, according to Hollywood, and the new movie about him, lots of support from everyone except Britain's own Olympic Association. Go Eddie!
The most inspiring thing about this legendarily simple man is that he is so always positive, with a brave and delightful heart. Searching in google, you'll hardly find a photo that he isn't smiling or laughing genuinely.
I remember his jumps very well! My mother never really liked to watch ski jumping, but when it was the turn to Eddie she always rushed out and said:"Tell me when he is down, I really cant see him jump!" And she always gasped with relief when I told her, he came down safe! Thats my memory of Eddie the Eagle! :o))
i watched the movie. And to see a little kid persued his drean like that made me cry. You was a very courage young boy and gave all you had to acomplish your drean. Congrats.
Forget 15 minutes of fame, Eddie changed the Olympics forever. No one will forget the "Eddie the Eagle" rule. You don't know quite what it is only that it exists, and as such Eddie lives on forever more. How cool is that? And then in Sydney we had Eric the Eel, a swimmer in the 50m front crawl from a country without a full - length pool, who saw everyone else in his heat 'false start' lol. So he swam alone, _at twice the WR time_, and the crowd and announcers were cheering for him to set a Personal Best!
@3:25 Even more reasons that Eddie is a true inspiration not to let anything or anyone get in the way of your end goal! Thank you Eddie for inspiring me to keep going. Thank you
We Canadians cheer the losers - I mean that in a good way, don't misinterpret. If you show you gave it your all, you'll get kudos. I think it's because of hockey culture - it runs on emotion. After a fight, for example, you applaud the competitors whether your team "won" or "lost" - they endangered themselves to show how much they cared about the game, hopeless or not, and you respect that. I remember being at the 2010 Women's Gold, CAN vs USA, and we made an improbable comeback, despite the US goalie being a veritable brick wall. At the medal ceremonies, as US was getting silver we not only clapped (hard for the heroes), but when it was the goalie's turn, the whole arena did a deafening standing O equal or louder than our champs. That mentality, I'm proud of.
Good movie. A great story of defying the odds, public opinion, insults and discouragement, and doing , what seemed like the impossible. His biography on the internet is fascinating.
Absolute bloody legend of the highest order. I so wanna meet Eddie, just to chat about those days gone by and realise a lifelong dream to meet the hero called Eddie The Eagle 🦅 We salute you Eddie 👋
I saw the movie today as I am now doing what I thought was.impossible for me before. To memorize my holy Qur'an. Eddie thank you for motivating me. I will always remember you as an inspiration.
last summer I went for a ride to Lake Placid and I came across the ski jumping venue.........As I looked at them I thought, HOLY CRAP. Makes knowing what Eddie did even more impressive
I love how everyone took the piss out of him nobody thought he could do it and they j us t thought he was a nobody but what they didn't know is that he turned into a living legend
He's a real star, saw a cookery show with him in and the best chefs. In it he made custard incorrectly and one chef said I will help and explained to Eddie about the eggs,
After the 1988 games, the Olympic officials created the Eddie the Eagle Rule that made it impossible for people like Eddie to ever compete in the games. What a bunch of snobs.
I met Eddie years ago when he reversed his car into mine in a car park just of the high street in Cheltenham he apologised we shook hands and then drove off
