So, at least in Legends, the way shields work is a dual system. Ships have both energy shields and particle shields. Energy shields protect against harmful radiation and energy blasts such as from a laser or turbolaser. Particle shields protect against solid objects (solid as in their physical state). Energy shields are pretty much always set to full strength because the majority of weapon systems are energy based. Particle shields on the other hand are usually set to low in order to protect against micro asteroids and small debris. The only way to stop a larger object (such as a proton torpedo or an out of control A-wing) is to turn up the particle shields to full or almost full strength. However, this prevents a ship from being able to fire back at the enemy or launch/retrieve any spacecraft. Ions are charged particles; charged being the key word. The damage they inflict comes not from their impact but from the transfer of energy from particle to particle. Ion weapons essentially overcharge the systems of an enemy ship, causing them to fail and shut down. This makes them great for disabling shields and then possibly the ship.
Nukes cause EMPs , and the effects of Ion cannons is star wars mirrors that of and EMP (electromagnetic pulse). Nope. It was said, that a Star Destroyer could 'destroy' i.e. devastate a planet on it's own. However, 'Planet Destroyer' sound less epic than 'Star Destroyer' and the naming was part of the Tarkin doctrine of projecting fear. The thought was that having one Star Destroyer in a star system was supposed to be enough to stop any thought of resisting the Empire. Few planets had a military that could hinder a Star Destroyer
One more flaw about the Star Destroyer is the huge blind spot where the main engines are. They have virtually no defense other than the shield generators and the Tie Fighters.
When you start to think about why star wars space battles are fought in relatively close ranges and usually within solar systems and not in interstellar space, it starts to make some sense as to why. Space combat at long ranges that span many millions of miles, would be extremely frustrating for gunners, commanders, and radar technicians.

4 ion protection. Arms and armor are always locked in a race. Ion torpedoes are designed to do this, if they where not effective they they would fall out of use. Also physics works differently in Star Wars.
9:47 I believe the ISD has 3 hangers. The larger opening on the bottom of the ship has a hanger on each side while there is a smaller 3rd hanger further to the front
I love it, it does have so many weakness. However, I think that comes from Sith thinking, as well as the Tarkin Doctrine. Shock and awe, might makes right, etc. Sure 70 fighters isn't much but against two (maximum) squadrons of Alliance fighters not to mention the heavy city devastating turbo lasers, the demoralizing power of the ISD alone makes up for its flaws in a way.
The TIE fighters are the skeleton army in clash Royale - built for quantity than quality. Designed to overwhelm with numbers rather than by strategic attacks.
"It inspires fear induced bowel movements in the hearts of your enemies" Herbalife, yum! LMFAO 💝 Sometimes you are so hilarious, I have to let you know. 😂
Also in WW1 battleships were also usually escorted by destroyers in a fleet. However that didn't mean they didn't have large secondary armament themselves. In WW2 the secondary armament of battleships became arguably more important than their primary.
Another flaw the ISD has is the lack of superfireing positioning of its main guns i.e. it would have to tip its bow down quite a bit to focus all its guns on either side of the superstructure forward which would render all of its ventral and most of its side guns usless. A better design would be to place all the main guns in a central row along the dorsal and ventral hull in superfiring positions so the could fire on either side, all forward, and some "over the shoulder", basically design it more like an actual battleship. Then put all you smaller guns and point defense on either "wing" of the triangle to protect the ship from smaller threats. Combine this with escorts and fighters and you've got one hell of a defensive screen for your capital ships. A flawed but fixable ship design.

Fighter deployment is handled MUCH better in franchises like Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5 which had the fighted shot out of the sides of the craft in individual launch tubes or bays, dozens could be launched at a time and in some cases, new fighters could be launched out of the tubes as soon as the first ones were deployed

You are an amazing human so don't let some of these people be right knobs to you.
I remember I had very hard times in the Rogue Squadron games to take down ISD's with a starfighter, even for Y-Wings. They had very strong laser defense, especially at the front and the sides of the ship. The only weak spot was at the back side where the engines are. But there the TIE-Squadrons were already wating for you.
I'd heard the shield domes on top of the bridge tower were in addition to smaller ones in the hull. They added extra shield generators to counter the problems with the overly exposed bridge.
The asymmetric design does hold some potential benefits by concentrating your armour & firepower on the side of the ship facing the enemy. This'll be particularly useful in fleet engagements where you're presenting a cohesive battle line.
Time was when the actual model makers referred to those as radar domes. Curtis Saxton agreed, trying to label them as sensor domes in the Complete Locations book - or at least partly so.
You are only referring to the canon sources. In the legends sources, books, graphic novels, and video games, and not forgetting the Imperial Source Book for West End Games, naval deployments and fleets were listed in exact detail. The Imperial Navy has hundreds of thousands of star-ships, with about half being front-line combat vessels. There were many support ships, including fleet carriers, resupply and reinforcement ships, and then there were the escorts, like the Carrack-class cruiser, or the Lancer-class frigate, or the interdictor cruisers! Star destroyers also carried large troop transports, that could hold 500 men each, as well as massive transport barges for deploying walkers and ground attack speeders. In many of these other sources, star destroyers were designed to take punishment, while essentially duelling it out in a 'broadside' style engagement. To this end, they had powerful tractor beams that would hold a target in place, allowing the heavy turbolasers and ion cannons to batter it until it surrendured, or was outright destroyed. The ISD also has multiple back-up generators for the shields, weapons and deflectors. Mentioned a few times is the life support and propulsion systems, which are priority systems and always protected.
2:03 Did I spend 10 minutes of my life carefully placing Imperial Class Star Destroyers from a top down view side by side to see how many would fit together? Yes I did. The answer to this useless question was 9, and they don’t even fill a complete 360°, so it was very disappointing, but I thought I’d share the fruits of my labor.
Considering it is suppose to lack point defense options, that is the VERY thing that would always kick my butt in games like Rebel Strike or Rogue Squadron, heck, even the 2005 Battlefront 2. Like excuse me Mr. The Star Destroyer could you not? Great video. Would love to see one on the Venator and/or Accalamator since they are of the same line of ship.
Now that you mention it imperial Star Destroyers do have more in common with WW1 battleships than WW2 battleships. Both ISDs and WW1 BBs had lots of massive cannons, were slow, had large crews, built to only fight other capital ships, everybody wanted one, had huge weaknesses that could be seen from miles away, and neither had large numbers of AA cannons.
The star destroyer had 3 shield gen 2 on the bridge and 1 under the ship and the hanger door under the ship could be closed. The ISD had three hangers 2 on the sides and one under the ISD.
After playing Star Wars: Squadrons, I now understand the reasoning behind the exposed bridge on Star Destroyers. When attacking a Star Destroyer as a small fighter, you want to fly underneath the shields to do damage to the hull directly. This is extremely easy to do to the main hull because it’s completely flat, apart from the cannons. If the bridge was on the main lower hull, it would be easy to shoot because all you have to do is fly in a straight line whilst firing your lasers at the giant metal pizza right underneath you. However, when the hull is placed in the way it is on the Imperial Star Destroyer, it’s extremely difficult to fly underneath the shields protecting it. Once the shields go down is when the exposed bridge becomes an issue.
I think another point that needs to be hammered is just the size of them. Like, big and imposing ships look really cool and cinematic but when it all comes down to it, is it really necessary? Especially for a warship? The Star Destroyers themselves are big enough to be floating cities if they had civilians on board...thinking about how much space the Executor has just breaks my mind. I mean, if it had a purpose for being so big and needing all that space...like maybe it was meant to be self sufficient, meant for deep space, or meant for more than just war and aggressive peace keeping, hell even if there were a city inside it or something it'd be understandable, but I can't really think of anything other than Tarkin and Palatine's gargantuan egos in any lore, both pre and post Disney acquisition, that really properly makes a good case for why the things are so damn big. What are they filling all that space with? Big scary hallways or multiple evil dark side saunas for Vader if he comes on or something? Bigger isn't always better. Bet Thrawn would have dedicated a substantial effort to completely redesigning imperial capital ships if he had been given the clout he deserved.
The ion cannon used in the battle of Hoth was a planetary defense weapon with a full set of reactors to power it. It should be powerful enough to damage or disable a capital ship.
Ion weapons were very useful in the Battle of Hoth as the Rebel's Planetary Ion Cannon was essential to allow the Rebels to disable the Star Destroyers long enough for the transports to make their escape.

That would be Legends. Then again, Grand Admiral Thrawn came up with the Star Wing Gunboat and the Missileboat.
I thoroughly enjoy how edgy this channel is getting while being acceptably tame. Favorite UA-cam channel.
I have one question does it destroy stars?
@@grayscribe1342 it's a joke

Here is a a good top 10 flaws idea for a video 10 flaws of vader's suit
Granted, a lot of theories point to many of those being intentional
#1:the suit.
Yes, we must make things easier for people like Matt the radar technician.
@GNK-1730 yea poor Matt he isn’t able to lead a ship about a light year away
Man! When This dude rants and go’s on about the dolphins I always die of laughter🤣😂
Generation tech i have to ask, what kind of soundtrack are you using to your videos? I checked the description but i can seem to find it.
It’s a website called epidemic sound
You CAN Seem to find it?
I like the musssiccc
did the Australian guy pick this music?
Dolphin attacks are on the rise, currently a beach in France is closed to the public due to a rampaging horndog dolphin, raping anyone who gets in the water. #HumanityFirst

Another great video from Generation Tech, thanks for the laughs and love all video's, keep on keeping on
Thanks Jotaroku glad you found it funny
I approve of this and all 10 star destroyer flaws made it into my bendu playlist for starwars and fantasy.
4 ion protection. Arms and armor are always locked in a race. Ion torpedoes are designed to do this, if they where not effective they they would fall out of use. Also physics works differently in Star Wars.
Star Destroyers were great in Empire at War. That game made it feel glorious to be the Empire.
I wish there was a whole alternate Empire that had more balls than this Empire
*Whisper* Hey kid, ever heard of Spaceballs?

Can you do a 10 flaws episode on the cantina of tatooine??😂
Like from the point of view of a health inspector?
*that* would be fun to watch! :-D
Do droids go to cantinas to drink, or to replenish their servo oil?
@@GenerationTech why droids can't enter! If grievous is on tatooine and he is very thirsty he can't go in the cantina
If grievous heard you call him a droid he would come in here and kill you personally.
I like the '10 flaws series'. Keep it going please.
7:50 well that escalated quickly
Also in WW1 battleships were also usually escorted by destroyers in a fleet. However that didn't mean they didn't have large secondary armament themselves. In WW2 the secondary armament of battleships became arguably more important than their primary.
10 flaws of light sabers
A flawed but fixable ship design.
keep on putting out that amazing content generation tech, death to the alien menace!

You know which ship had almost all of those? Fighter launch tubes, concealed bridge, point defence, retractable hangars, armour without a single point of failure - Battlestar Galactica!
So does this mean that it's so easy to kill humans, dolphins can do it in their sleep? 🤔
Yes the threat is real

Go back to Yogscast channel. UA-cam doesn't need another Justin Y.
Also whats with the Ben cult anyway. It's getting strange...
You should do 10 flaws with stormtrooper armour and by the way love the channel and amazing video keep up the good work
Fighter deployment is handled MUCH better in franchises like Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5 which had the fighted shot out of the sides of the craft in individual launch tubes or bays, dozens could be launched at a time and in some cases, new fighters could be launched out of the tubes as soon as the first ones were deployed
Marginally better, they were still utterly fictional and romanticized.
Hey! Steve again and firstly I'm at home watching this. Secondly, the melee kill may be far more difficult on those crafty porpoises, but few actions available to humankind produce a greater feeling of satisfaction... Ahhh....
I wanna see 10 flaws with at sts
Landing the SSD to deploy all the troops at once was an excellent idea. It’s just a shame that it isn’t the empire who thought of it...
To be fair the Imperial-I SD had laser cannons....but the Imperial-II replaced them with more turbolasers or power systems I believe....
Bro I love your sick burn when you said about only 93% of us being human. I totally agree though people are horrible beings in general or can be at times. By the way I having been loving all these Star Wars videos, they are really good theories and informative. Keep up the good work. You are an amazing human so don't let some of these people be right knobs to you.
What about 10 flaws of Vulture droids?
I remember I had very hard times in the Rogue Squadron games to take down ISD's with a starfighter, even for Y-Wings. They had very strong laser defense, especially at the front and the sides of the ship. The only weak spot was at the back side where the engines are. But there the TIE-Squadrons were already wating for you.
Anyone who disliked this video is a dolphin

Or someone who likes Star Destroyers just the way they are.
I'd heard the shield domes on top of the bridge tower were in addition to smaller ones in the hull. They added extra shield generators to counter the problems with the overly exposed bridge.
Can you do a the flaws for the finalizer ship. Thanks
Ankit Bhardwaj the resurgent class battlecruiser
The asymmetric design does hold some potential benefits by concentrating your armour & firepower on the side of the ship facing the enemy.
This'll be particularly useful in fleet engagements where you're presenting a cohesive battle line.
The shield generators
Where right in the opening
Those two spheres on the ship
What where they thinking ?
Are they trying to lose ?
Sometimes you have to lose to win?
Time was when the actual model makers referred to those as radar domes. Curtis Saxton agreed, trying to label them as sensor domes in the Complete Locations book - or at least partly so.
I read this is the AVGN's voice
Why can't they get shields for their shields
I really like your videos, they are hilarious and informative. Keep it up bro
Thanks!
Anyone else insanely confused with the first couple minutes 😂
It's still one of my all-time favourite sci-fi capships of all time. Warts and all.
To bad none of that has anything to do with what we see in the films....
The Imperial-class Star Destroyer is magnificent, beautiful, awe inspiring, but impractical… Couldn’t agree with you more Allen 😅
Top 10 flaws with top 10 flaws?
2:03 Did I spend 10 minutes of my life carefully placing Imperial Class Star Destroyers from a top down view side by side to see how many would fit together? Yes I did. The answer to this useless question was 9, and they don’t even fill a complete 360°, so it was very disappointing, but I thought I’d share the fruits of my labor.
*hides the dolphin corpses in my closet* you didnt see anything
Considering it is suppose to lack point defense options, that is the VERY thing that would always kick my butt in games like Rebel Strike or Rogue Squadron, heck, even the 2005 Battlefront 2. Like excuse me Mr. The Star Destroyer could you not?
Great video. Would love to see one on the Venator and/or Accalamator since they are of the same line of ship.

Now that you mention it imperial Star Destroyers do have more in common with WW1 battleships than WW2 battleships.
Both ISDs and WW1 BBs had lots of massive cannons, were slow, had large crews, built to only fight other capital ships, everybody wanted one, had huge weaknesses that could be seen from miles away, and neither had large numbers of AA cannons.
wow allen got triggered, dont c tht everyday hahaha
Haha I don’t know if triggered was the right word sometimes I see comments that the world just needs to see
You mentioned EU and Vongs. You are now among my favourite channels. ;)
HAHAHAHA FUNNY
I had to stop n tap the screen to make sure the title of the video..that intro was wild. 🤣🤣🤣
Bet Thrawn would have dedicated a substantial effort to completely redesigning imperial capital ships if he had been given the clout he deserved.
the Y-85 Titan Drop ship was used to deploy AT-ATs in Rebles as well as Battlefront 2
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
The ion cannon used in the battle of Hoth was a planetary defense weapon with a full set of reactors to power it. It should be powerful enough to damage or disable a capital ship.
"...one of the most recognizable triangle-shaped things after pizza and HerbaLife's business model.." On point.
Ion weapons were very useful in the Battle of Hoth as the Rebel's Planetary Ion Cannon was essential to allow the Rebels to disable the Star Destroyers long enough for the transports to make their escape.
