A short video about the real story of Saarinen (Kärkkäinen). All the movie clips are from Rukajärven tie, also known as Ambush.
Rukajärven tie is a war movie directed by Olli Saarela. It debuted on January 22, 1999 in Finland, after which it was released internationally. The movie is based on a book written by Antti Tuuri and its leads are played by Peter Franzén as Lt. Eero Perkola and Irina Björklund as Kaarina Vainikainen, Lt. Perkola's love.
The film won seven Jussi Awards in 2000 including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Photography, Best Edit, Best Staging, Best Sound Design and Best Score. (wiki)
This kind of story could be placed to almost any war that has been fought during the last hundred years. It´s a story about what war can do to us humans. In photographical sense this film is magnificent. The most impressive scene in this film is the one that has the same setting as the Leonardo´s famous painting of the Lord´s Supper. I have that on a coffee cup. My Dad and Uncle fought in WW2. Dad was in the US Army, Uncle was in the US Marines. On my Moms side had cousins in Finland fighting the Russians.

were his mates had withdrawn. The trip is about 6 kilometres long,and it takes him some 10 hours to get there.
Next stop is field hospital, then hospital in Finland,and after weeks,or months for that, finally passed home.
Thats what i called a real Via Dolorosa. Lived and cultivating his homestead many decades after war.

Some cold facts.
Winter war:
Finnish losses: 26000 dead, russian losses: 226000 dead
Continuation war:
Finnish losses: 63000 dead, russian losses: 202000 dead
The frontline was more or less the same in the whole war, while the other nations fronts went forward and back trough europe the finns hold their line. All in all finnland were by far the best soliders that can be said out of these numbers and the frontline.

Those are the facts that lead us to ally with Germany. It was natural to ally with Germany since British and French were no help. The swedish goucernement yes but not the swedish people, beside the 20000 woulounteers who went to the front, most swedish ciwilans gave the finnish peopel support, I remember my grandfather's family gave away their best horse to finnland and a lot of clothes. Also we helped tens of thousand of war cildren and refugees so sweden did a big part.

@@annikauranen7984 Yes, indeed. In Winter War those bofors AT guns we borrowed stopped most of tanks in early stage of war. Also, volunteers and other support too. And I totally understand why u didnt allow french and british come trough your land to help. That would be act of war in russian point of view. Funny thing about that AT tank borrowing. I'm so proud of our ancestors, for they protected and defended our beautiful country against Soviet Union's far superior military forces. Heart and courage won over material. It was David vs. Goliath.

Kunnia Isanmaa! Finnish film makers are world class. I wish such films were available in the US in region 1 format. A fantastic story that illustrates why Finland stands today as a symbol of strength and great bravery.

Talvisotaan osallistui n.8000 Ruotsalaista vapaaehtoista,siis Ruotsin kansalaista.
Yksi Lentorykmentti ja Ilmatorjuntajoukkoja,pääosin omalla kalustollaan.Rintamavastuuna
Pohjois-Suomi.Joitain pudotuksia he saivat tililleen,ja muutamia heistä ammuttiin alas.
Maasotaan he eivät osallistuneet. Ruotsalaisten kokonaistappiot talvisodassa olivat
muistaakseni 33 kaatunutta ja 185 haavoitunutta,haavoittuneista suurin osa paleltu-
neita. Etulinjan edessä leffa taas kuvaa JR 61:n taisteluita Jatkosodassa,jonka henkilöstö
oli pääosin ruotsinkielisiä,mutta Suomen kansalaisia.

Oikeassa olet. Nykyisen kansallislaulun säveltä (ja sanoitustakin suuremmaksi osin) käyttävät jo Viro sekä jokin Afrikan pikkuvaltio jonka kehityksessä Suomi on ollut vahvasti mukana. Näin ollen olen samaa mieltä kanssasi: Finlandia kansallislauluksi. Ihanan nationalistinen (mutta ei liikaa) ja sopivasti liikuttava. Tämä kappale kuvaa valtiotamme paljon paremmin kuin nykyinen hymni.

Kyllä oot ihan oikeassa siinä että itsenäisyys oli mahtava asia Suomelle mutta ei se tullut helppoon hintaan. Minua vaan kismittää kun nyt kerran naapureita ollaan Ruotsin kanssa ni ois ne voinut solidaarisempiakin olla. Oikeastaan Venäjän tsaari Nikolai käynnisti Suomen autonomian, antoi Suomelle oman valuutan, autonomian.

Lisättäköön vielä, että me taisteliin joskus Ruotsin valtakunnan kanssa koska me oltiin osa Ruotsin valtakuntaa. Nyt Ruotsi ei meitä koko voimillaan auttanut, sillä me ei oltu samaa valtakuntaa. Sitäpaitsi uskonpa että ruotsalaiset vahtivat myös länsirajojaan, sillä Saksa oli juuri miehittänyt Norjan ja ruotsalaiset pelkäsivät saman toistuvan heillekkin. Tapahtuihan rajaloukkauksia Ruotsin puolelle ja loukkaajat olivat saksalaisia.

En tiennytkään tämän olevan todellisesta elämästä. Olen mm. monessa paikassa kuullut "rukajärven tie oli hyvä, mutta sitten siinä piti olla se ramboilukohta jossa se muka selvisi monesta laukauksesta, ei olisi oikeasti selvinnyt"... Taitaa se olla niin, että pitää lopettaa realismista puhuminen, ja ottaa sodasta kuullut tarinat todesta tästä lähtien! Eikä nöyristellä, koska joku ulkomaalainen pitää niitä uskomattomina.
Sodassa tapahtui oikeasti jopa vielä uskomattomampia juttuja.

@blockthehood Also, you are speaking lots of this "Finnish SS". There is no such thing. There were about 6000 Finns that joined SS, but never formed a real Finnish SS. Most of the Finns stayed in Finland to protect it from being invaded. Not for some specific ideology. Btw SS Nord fought in Finland, but it was not Finnish.

Totta asiaahan sinäkin solkkaat myös ;).
Ehkä oltaisiin solidaarisempiakin olla, mutta eihän Ruotsilla silloin tainnut hääppöinen armeija olla ja armeijaahan tarvitaan myös maan sisäisten ääriryhmien hillitsemiseen ja rikollisten kurissapitoon joten oli niillä kotonakin hommia.
Mitä autonomiaan tulee, olet oikeassa Nikolaista. Suomelle on ollut hyötyä molemmista emämaistaan taloudellisesti... jatkuu seuraavassa viestissä....

Sweden have not had a war sins 1809 thats right, BUT swedes have fought in many wars up to day, with bravery and skill, all of the were volonters...
9000 came to the Finlands defence during the winter war, to late to do anything significant, but 30 of them lost there life, during the war 1941 to 1944, some 400 fought for Finland many died or were badly wounded, but of those wounded many got back to the fighting as soon as they could.

ai onko... täytyypä ihan perehtyä :P... niin, tottakai tilanne on dramatisoitu elokuvaan, sehän on ihan selvää. Väitätkö, että kukaan ei tekisi sellaista, edes Jenkit haha... kannattais perehtyä muuhunkin sota- ajan materiaaliin kuin pelkästään sotahistorian aakkosiin...
Oli se hyvä olla kova kun suurin osa asu maalla ja joutu joka päivä kävellä kilometrejä kouluun. Nykypäivänä miehet on paljon heikompia. Mutta on hyvä pitää tällästä meininkiä yllä, jotta jokanen tajuaa sen, että tosipaikan tullen pitää puskea eteenpäin.
