Evening Alec, you'll be gaming with Dom and his Sicilian project. A nice Byzantine army coming along very nicely. Just be careful with the Fire-forge horses!!

Yes, sticking the horses to the base is challenging. But other than that the finished product is great. Good to see you last week.

Dom knows what I like with cavalry, I can be a bit gung ho! but I will try and out fox him. 😁

I am very impressed indeed. I've wanted to have a Byzantine project since I read The Normans in Sicily: The Normans in the South 1016-1130 And the Kingdom in the Sun 1130-1194 by John Julius Norwich. Cracking read, and highly recommended for wargamers. Hope you can show these colourful gentlemen exercising their steeds on the table some time soon.

I have a game on Friday, so will record highlights and put online as soon as I can. Playing Normans, which will be hard.

That’s a cracking looking force 👍. Always fancied doing Byzantines since I first encountered them under WRG 6th edition! Love the colourful cavalry. Very nice work on the heavy infantry shield designs as well.

Thanks. I must admit I really enjoyed the project, possibly because of the variety of colours.

I bet you do, you remember how useless I am with cavalry. 😬

Looking at my Lamming Byzantines painted a long time ago in nicely uniformed colours! Seems clearer now that your approach is more historically correct. I do like Lion Rampant. Mechanisms more straightforward than Saga IMO. Saga wins for me on the battleboards giving each warband a clear flavour. Thanks for the Channel.

I agree Bill, I like Saga, but it needs lots of concentration and practice. Lion Rampant is quite different, it is very easy to pick up and you can have a more relaxed game. It has its faults, but overall I think they work well, especially for an evening game. I am playing Saga next week, so I do vary it a bit.

Ooo Fireforge Cataphracts. Do they go together easy enough? Cracking force. I'm just starting into Crusade era stuff thanks to Footsore Miniatures. Lovely force, them Byzzies. Cheers.

yes, they glue together easily, the only hard bit is sticking the horses to the base. Superglue, then Bostic, then terrain covering.

Hi Alec. Love following your channel and looking at your miniatures and the occasional dive into history. May I ask where you acquired the Viking in the Sun and Crusader States books? I cannot seem to locate them on Amazon or on Osprey’s website.

I think I got mine from North Star. Or you could try Firestorm games. They may be out of stock, but hopefully not. They were published by The University of Edinburgh, not Osprey for some reason. I hope you find them.

I do have them, and have for some time, but I wanted a stand alone Byzantine force, with the option of adding them if need be. 😀
