  • Bomani J. Story was born in Riverside, California and raised in Redlands, California. Growing up, Bomani always had a love of reading literature and watching films. He even spent time writing his own short stories as a child. Upon graduation of high school, Bomani cut his teeth on filmmaking when he started making short films with his fellow collaborators. After two years at San Bernardino Valley College, Bomani was accepted into the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts to study film production. Since his graduation from USC in 2010, he has been honing his skills as a writer and director. Bomani makes his directorial debut with a reimagining of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, "The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster", a classic literary horror story filmed through a modern lens (which world premiered at 2023 SXSW).

►WE USE THIS SOUND RECORDER (AMAZON) - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Would you allow someone else to direct your first feature film?

Sure. It's about the story not me. Anyway just wondering if you could read my new book called forged in the fire part 1. It's on wattpad but I'm also an aspiring filmmaker.

No. Both mine and my brother's answers, who's working on the same stories as myself would agree with Bomani. Particularly in regards to being able to trust someone with YOUR story. Also debating if the people you wish to work with would either positively fertilise your story, or contaminate it. What my brother and I have both done, is we've made ourselves completely irreplaceable and invaluable, so the story absolutely CANNOT be done without us.

Yes, if it were Spike Jonze. I think Charlie Kaufman was very wise to let him direct his first film. Or possibly someone like David Mamet, Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese, then sure. If it's not someone with a solid reputation though, then no way!

Yes I will hire a director to direct my first movie. As a black woman who is planning on becoming a producer. I will hire a white director because I am a black woman telling a story about a lot of Caucasians. I am black but my characters are white. I think I should hire a white director because I really don't know anything about white people and I don't really know if I know how to tell a story like that yes I can naturally transform into my white characters. I know how they act a little but not as much. For instance Tyler Perry the talk show host Loni Love was saying that Tyler Perry should hire black female directors since he mainly writes black stories about female characters. I think I should hire white film directors because as a black woman with all white characters I really don't know how to tell a story like that and Caucasian writers and film directors can help me out a lot because I do know my characters, but white people know there people and they know how to tell a story about there people better than I can.

Fascinating insights from an industry pro! As a aspiring filmmaker myself, I appreciated Bomani's relatable advice on navigating the challenges of getting one's first movie made. His emphasis on perseverance, building relationships, and staying true to one's vision really resonated with me. Can't wait to see what he's working on next!

Big ups Bomani J. You know, if I may say. It's kinda hard for me to differentiate myself from the different roles in a project. Being the producer, director, writer and everything else, I just sometimes wonder how the director for example, can't, won't, or doesn't take on more roles in a production. Aside from the money financing of course. I am Nine projects in I've created and so far only one I've released to the public. Not that the others aren't likeable. But as far as creativity, I would bet and encourage filmmakers or wanna be filmmakers to THINK of wearing as many hats as you can in making a project. To me that means picking up a camera as well and focusing on cinematics. There are so many filmmakers these days that it might beneficial quicker to come up with a project yourself that people might embrace. If you've studied simple English and reading I'd say you can write a script. Don't let anyone tell you you can't. Learn all of the other aspects first and I can promise you, you will come up with something worthy. But it takes time & drive. I am at a disadvantage being in the Midwest, but that will take more networking on my part to know people. I understand this and I'm fine with that. Getting hired for a Director's job though, I would have to say that goes to who you know or being at the right place at the right time. Ps. I understand Bomani J's point in that I cannot see detaching myself from my script and or letting someone else alter it unless we share the same vision. Just my 2 cents. Good luck Director's in landing gigs in this INDUSTRY. My blessings are with you... Keep up the good work FILM COURAGE! I love your questions and take on things.

Him giving his screenplay to someone else to direct would be like a painter telling another painter what to paint - it might come close, and it might even be good, but it won't be it.

That's standard in the industry though and has resulted in some amazing films.
