While the world watches North Korea compete in the Olympics, we binge-watched North Korean television in an effort to learn more about daily life in the hermit kingdom under Kim Jong Un.
North Korea’s Supreme Leader comes from a long line of movie buffs. His father, Kim Jong Il, was passionate about filmmaking and believed in the power of the cinema to unite his country. His movies of choice were big military dramas with messages of duty to the leader embedded in nearly every frame.
But Kim Jong Un loves the small screen. Under his rule, state media has moved away from the communist epic and into more intimate, family dramas that air every night between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., when the power goes out in Pyongyang.
To understand more about what North Koreans are watching and what the government wants them to think, we arranged a screening with Jean Lee, who became an expert in North Korean television when she worked as a journalist in Pyongyang.

@@maxwelsh6121 the attitude is no different than researchers studying cancer and giving talks at conventions. And yes, discoveries will lead to "oh, neat" moments. Look at John Snow in and his discovery of the source of the cholera outbreak of 1857. I even argue that if a researcher presents in the manner that you want, academia won't take you seriously. There is no bias here. I see findings and her own bubbly personality.

It's interesting that so many people think, despite the fact that they talked about how brutal of a regime North Korea is in this very video, bringing up power outages, pervasive poverty, chronic food shortage, and downright dystopian propaganda infiltrating every aspect of the citizens' lives, that this is somehow glorifying North Korea.
Like if they aren't explicitly told how to feel, they get confused. Ironically, they would be the exact type of people to fall for North Korea's propaganda.
If you think this video paints North Korea in anything but a bad light, I really don't know what to say to you.

Seeing the scene of North Korea's rocket launching, I thought it is same as that of the moon landing of the US in 1969. American TV stations enthusiastically broadcast the historic moment all the day. People were glued to the news reports of the moon landing and proud of the country. It is a useful tip for propaganda.

There is something lacking in American TV shows. They don't show people all getting along and teach people how to be nice 2 the disabled and disadvantaged enough. But America isn't quite ready for that yet. TV right now is mostly helping people vent their anger at being mistreated and subtly trying to teach people how to redirect that anger into more productive measures than attacking each other.
Anyway, this seems hopeful. Happy and healthy people are more likely to not want to attack other people. And maybe soon they will be open-minded enough to work with other countries to learn how to have enough food in North Korea! In exchange for promising to not attack other countries

bank3r I mean yes and no they’re literally being made to act in ways that subconsciously affect you and make the propaganda work so while women in NK shows aren’t necessarily “different” they’re 100% only acting how they are to affect how their viewers will act in real life, as opposed to being a reflection of the viewer as in western media
