Your videos are so helpful. We got our first greyhound a few weeks ago - 3 year old retired racer. He seemed absolutely fine walking for just under 2 weeks, seemed to enjoy them and would be excited as soon as we got his collar etc out. Then in the space of a few days he went from freezing on the walk, to refusing to leave the house and walking away when we try to get his gear on. Morning or Evening. We are scaling back, not forcing him and letting him exercise in the garden/with his toys indoors. Focusing on bonding, calmness in the house and hopefully building his confidence. Not sure what else do to, luring him with treats or a toy works for a few steps but then he just freezes again and pulls towards the house. Hopefully he will get his sparkle back in time, it is early days after all.
Very helpful. Our grey, Tofu would freeze a lot when we first got her. She is so much better now. We found giving her space and time to ‘reset’ worked.
Your videos have been a life saver for me and my Brindle greyhound, Bruce. We´re learning so much from you and your gorgeous greys (we especially love Gandalf! :D) We´ve had him for 3 months and he´s be really struggling with adapting to the city noises and hustle and bustle and getting from point A to B has been nearly impossible but little by little we´re making progress! A lot of your tips with walks and this video in particular have been so helpful for us to understand what´s going on and learning how to deal with it. We found the tip with sticky treats is brilliant! Thank you for your very helpful and informative videos!
Hello from Australia! I really appreciate your videos Jill. I adopted my second greyhound three months ago after losing my first grey, Meg, last year. My new greyhound, Poppy, is an ex-racing dog. We're encountering a few issues I didn't have with Meg who didn't race. Your videos are instructional and make me feel like I have a bit of support in these early days. I'd love to know where the harness your Meg is wearing is from? I would love to find a harness with a front clip option. Poppy currently has a Ruffwear Web Master harness, which only has the back clip and I suspect she also does not enjoy that pressure. Kind regards from Tasmania!
Hi Jessica, lovely to hear I am helping people over in Australia! I tend to use either a Perfect Fit harness, available from Dog Games Workshop (this is in the video) or a Mekuti harness, from their own website
Thanks for the video! We’re from Australia and we’ve had our greyhound for two and a half weeks. He’s a gentle boy, and he gets very excited about going for walks but when we leave the house he freezes and won’t move. We think he might be over his threshold but we don’t know how to fix this or slowly get him to adjust
Congratulations! Its still extremely early days for him, most important is not to push him as yes you're right, he's finding it all a bit overwhelming right now
Enjoyed watching the video, would the same methods be appropriate if your dog freezes when it wants to go a certain way? I.E we took our Grey on a bus for the first time for a new experience, now we can't walk him past the bus stand as he freezes if there is a bus there and wants to get on!
Yes you could try the same things, although i'm not sure i would call this freezing as its not about him being anxious...he sounds keen to have a bus ride!
My grey has been freezing for over 3 years. We just moved and now it’s even worse. It take minutes to get her unfrozen, sometimes freezing in the middle of the street. Random places. How do you handle severe freezing? She won’t wear a harness.
That sounds very difficult for you both 🤔 usually freezing stems from being overwhelmed, so you need to address that. It's something I often address through a behaviour consult... If you're interested in booking details are on my website Www.jillwoodmancaninecare.co.uk
I've had my grey 7 weeks and she always freezes on walks if they're not circuit walks or if she can't go the way she wants, do you know what I can do about that?
i tend to avoid out and back walks, it can often be a problem and management of the route is often a good way to start to help them feel more comfortable on the walk. do consider that she has reasons for not wanting to go a certain direction, as I explain in the video, even if you are not aware of them!
@@jwcaninecare yeah my rescue centre said about that, I obviously don't notice things that have stopped her wanting to go a certain way. I do hope her freezing improves, in the mean time I just stick to circular walks
Update: I contacted my previous trainer (not specialized in greyhounds) but had a great suggestion. I need to up the high value treats. Went and bought freeze dried beef - game changer! Will still need to work on why this is happening, one thing at a time.
Good stuff! higher value treats can often get you out of a fix if you get stuck, but definitely look into the cause of the issue as well, else you are creating conflict for your dog which could add stress in the long term
The busy roads are challenging.
This advice here is much appreciated!🌺🐾🧚♀️
You're very welcome :-)

Bless, sounds like it suddenly sunk in and he's feeling overwhelmed. You're doing the right thing. take it slowly, and let him dictate the pace

Hope it helps 😊
Such an informative video. Thank you 🌺

Thank you, very helpful.
I’m in USA, can all your behavioral coaching be done virtual?
Yes I mostly work online, using Zoom :-)
What does ''I need space'' really mean?
To be further away from the scary thing - being close to something frightening is likely to be more upsetting
Very helpful Thanks
