Are you enjoying this new series? What should I learn next?
Gouache has my heart, so I have to suggest it! Ruth Wilshaw is an amazing teacher for gouache!
Enjoyed it very much .. I would like to see you take on another acrylic paint project .. learning the different brush techniques for shading, dry brushing, highlighting, etc. It would be nice to see you work through a complete piece, taking multiple episodes to complete! There are so many techniques to cover, or discover😉 It would be kind-of like 'paint and sip' episodes!
I think you need to try sculpting next… and painting on sculpture. Painting with colored slip on ceramics is a whole experience itself.
Watercolor. I'm trying it now and loving it. I'm a mess, using pans, pencils and tubes indiscriminately. But I'm having fun.
acrylic/resin pouring
I think you need a base of "liquid white" for the Bob Ross painting! That's how he gets it to blend so smoothly (said with the absolute confidence of someone who has never made an oil painting in their life 😂)
I thought that’s what I made, but I later realized that I hadn’t done it right. But it’s definitely what would have made the difference!
@@SarahRenaeClark I've just seen you figure that out a bit later in the video - learning by doing ftw! Both paintings came out really well but your facial expressions during the process are the highlight of this video!!
Lol, I've given my sister cooking tips I saw online that I haven't tested out and they worked, so you don't always need experience to help someone
You were absolutely right though, can also use clear gesso
@@godhateseveryonewhodoesntr5977 there was a story of a little girl (like 8-9) who survived in the wilderness for a few weeks or something because she read a bunch of survival guides. Good theoretical knowledge can't be understated.
Wow! I can’t believe you’ve never watched Bob Ross. I watched him as a little girl for years. He was on PBS (free tv) in the US forever. He’s an icon here. He was one of the sweetest people. He had pet squirrels :) So glad you’ve found him :)
You did a great job! Oil painting is so hard I've only attempted it once lol
So glad you liked the brushes 😁 thank you for using them! I love both paintings but I think the second is my favorite, the colors are beautiful!
Sounds like you need to give it another go! It’s definitely a lot more different to acrylics than I first expected. I’m not sure which I like more, but oils intrigue me!
@@SarahRenaeClark I used natural Turpenoid to help me paint with oil paints when I took an oil painting class my first semester as a student during the Fall 2009 semester at Georgia State University (GSU) Atlanta, GA location.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!
@Chloe, I want to see you paint again wtih oils. I saw your video a while back and I think if you get a little bit of an understanding of the oil mediums, you will love it. It is slower to dry that acrylics, which is both good and bad. It means you can capture these stunning colours and gradients and I think this would be the perfect backdrop for a Disney castle sky. With the help of some quick drying mediums (gamlin have a nice one that is non toxic too, so bonus), you will grow to love it. You definitely have the talent to be able to create some beautiful pieces with it. You will actually soon learn that it isn't even hard. I used to think that too and was sticking to acrylics. I just realised, I wasn't doing it right and some of the YT tutorials skipped the important things. Good luck.
I love how you are willing and open to trying new mediums even if you’re terrified of it! You did fantastic in both pieces!
For answering your question:
You can use acrylic paint first and when that´s dry (pretty quickly) you can do oil painting on top. I love acrylic painting just because it´s so approachable with cleaning and mixing water. And it dries more quickly. I don´t know if I´m the only one, but when I painted with oil paints, while the painting dried it attracted my dogs hair 🙈
I was thinking about trying them after seeing this, then realized
🤔 😕 , nope, it'd just be covered in fur and feathers! Lol!
Yeah that happens. Build a cardboard box to store the painting in as it dries. Won’t keep all dust from getting in but it will keep a ton out. Also helps if you cover the box with a bag or something to further keep dust/fur out. Tends to be what I do when I wait for paintings to dry.
I love that you just gave me the courage to try oil painting. I've been doing acrylic and watercolor for years, but never oil and I've been asked to do it so often, I've just been scared to waste medium and supplies without having a decent painting to sell when I'm done, plus it takes forever to dry. But now I'm going to try it because you just gave me the courage to do it Sarah, thank you.
You mentioned that you hadn't watched Bob Ross before. My brother and I grew up in the middle of nowhere during the late 60's & 70's and our TV watching options were very limited. Since PBS was one of the clearest stations to receive it became a staple of afternoon viewing when we got home from school. I remember watching cooking tutorials and Bob Ross everyday for years during elementary and middle school. I don't think that either of us realized at the time how truly blessed we were. I love your painting, and more importantly, I think that Bob would, too. Job well done!
Totally loved watching this, and it’s an extra bonus that we got to see how different in texture it can be and still look great.
Oil pastels can be your baby steps to attempt later oil painting with brushes. They can also be blended with linseed oil and other mineral spirits. The good thing about oil painting on canvas is that you can recycle canvases by covering them with white or black. Great try and a fun video to watch too. Thanks!
I'd love to see you try watercolor painting. For a specific supply, Marabu Art Crayons, which are a mix of a crayon and a pastel and unless you blend with your fingers on the paper (they do offer a blender), you don't have to touch the wax!
Thank you for your courage in learning something new while showing it to us
You are HYSTERICAL! Keeping me thoroughly entertained! Thank you sooooo much!
Bob’s method is called “wet on wet”. I think that would help you with the dryness.
Edit: I want to see you do another Bob Ross painting!!
They turned out great!!! 👏👏👏👏
Sarah! Your (oil) painting came out really good! You should be proud…🤩 I really like how you just let your creative juices flow and you don’t give up even if you’re not thrilled at the beginning of something new that you’re trying. I have a lot of admiration for you!
Thank you!
Well said. I completely agree!!
That landscape came out great!
Your so brave learning on camera and they look great 👍 I loved oil paint too, they blend so nicely.
I am a big fan of Oil medium, probably because I tried it before trying out other mediums (water and dry mediums like pencil). I'll suggest you to use paint thinners more generously, and use it like you'd use water in watercolour. That way, you'll slowly learn how to work around the consistency. Once you get that, Oil is really fun!! You did AMAZING for a first time! I love how you tried knives to finish it. Looks great!
Your first oil paintings are beautiful! I’ve been using oils for a few years now and I love them. Mediums like liquin or galkyd can help your paint dry faster. Linseed oil is great for finishing glazes if you’ve already used very oil heavy paint. The blend-ability and drying time is why I love oils but I know some hate it for the same reasons
For a first timer, your work is quite splendid. One thing that I learnt from my old teacher is to give oil painting rest for at least a day after every layer!!!! That's why oil paintings can extend up to a month, free hand!!!!
Another thing I love doing during online classes is noting first and using next. First go on to multiple videos, take some notes and come back to your work.
Happy learning journey to you!!!! 💕
I knew that learning oil painting in a day would have some big limitations- the biggest being TIME! I can’t wait to try these again and give myself more time to build layers over days, without a time pressure of making a video!
This is a fantastic video, I'd love to see you try sculpting, or painting a 3D piece like a squishie or a miniature. I love your energy in wanted to try new things and can not wait for the next episode ❤
I hope she will try miniature painting. Painting in 3d is different but still fun!
I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!!!! Love it
you did absolutely amazing today! I do agree with some people in the comments that you should've used liquid white and I saw you said you figured out you did it wrong later, so kudos to you! I think the next thing you should try is watercolors. I love the way the look but they dry fast so it might be a challenge! lots of love ❤️
This is great! One thing that may be helpful is Bob Ross had a very unique approach to oils in painting with a wet on wet technique and to make it work he actually created a product he called Magic White, basically titanium white mixed with linseed oil, but you can purchase dupes at craft stores. He often covered his canvas skyline with it at least before adding colors which would make them really moist and smooth and you could use less paint on your brush.
Another trick he often talked about with the wet on wet technique was to use thinner pain on top of thicker paint. So thin your paint as you go.
Your joy is inspiring!
I’ve only dabbled in oil once and it is completely different than acrylic painting for sure!! I love this video idea of trying new art forms! There are a lot I haven’t tried and would love to on my art channel! Your videos are always so well done and fun to watch!!!
Watercolour or Gauche, I love painting with them. I paint abstract as well the normal paintings. The guy from ADC attack had some videos on gauche.
I love this series! I’ve dabbled in many types of arts and crafts from polymer clay to pastels to everything in between. I think what you made is fantastic! It’s always great to learn new skills. That way you can always create something new.
Wow!!! That is amazing art, I love it!! It is soooo good.
Thank you for bravely sharing your learning journey. You give me confidence to try new things too
Love the painting. It looks very nice.
Love the result for a first time oil painting ! Great jobs from the video you can see the joy you had while painting, something that wasn’t so visible with the acrylics :)
I really love your fresh presentation style and that you are a fellow Aussie, but I am not much into colouring or pencils, but I love watercolour and soft pastel drawing so I would love to see you do both those mediums. Even more painting in general. Oooh I would love to see you try gelli printing too! It’s a lot of fun!
Have you ever tried gouache? Love the stuff! I refuse to try oil 😂 I love Skillshare as well, such great lessons. Paintings are great, good job! 😄👍🏻
I love these videos and seeing you explore different mediums it helped me with motivation and inspired me to try different mediums
That was really fun! I love your attitude when it comes to new mediums. You may enjoy oil paint sticks. It is like drawing with paint. Sennelier makes them, R+F and Jack Richeson.
Never heard of this. Please, please try it!
Hi Sarah, the technique you used for the second painting was made for acrylic (palette knife, raised textured paint). Oil paint is used for smooth blend paintings like classical paintings (because they take forever to dry and you can blend them to your hearts content until you’re satisfied. Blocky colors that have high contrast and used with palette knife is made for acrylics because the paints will already be dry when you want to put smth else on top of it, thats why they wont get muddied. Sending you love
Thank you. I learnt something new.
@@gilashroot8697 most welcome
gouache also works wonderfully with blocky colors!
I know a few artists that use both palette knife and raised textured paint for oilpaints! Even though oils is mostly common for smooth blend paintings, you can still add texture and use the palette knife. I think it’s up to every single artist how they want to approach
My great uncle was Bert Flugelman a well known Australian artist who is best known for his pyramidal sculpture. What's lesser known is that he began as an oil painter and many of his earlier works were done with a pallet knife in an impasto method as Sarah did. He made some beautiful works while travelling around Europe but moved to sculpture as he lost most of this work in a house fire. He was also born in Poland before moving to Australia and was a polio surviver, he was quite the flamboyant interesting person to know.
Your paintings turned out so beautiful! It's so much fun watching you try new mediums! I absolutely love painting and I'm so happy you are finding joy with it too :)
I can't wait to see more painting from you! Those turned out great!! 😍 You're a wonderful artist!! ☺️
I loved your video showing your first time using oil paints. I think your painting turned out beautiful! 🎨💜 Thank you for doing these videos showing you trying a different art medium for the first time. Your videos help inspire me to keep trying in my artistic journey. 😊
I’ve been watching a lot of you’re videos recently and you’ve inspired me to get into colouring which i now love!
I’d love to see a video of you trying to do a colouring page with makeup! I feel like the colours could be quite easily blendable but i’m not sure.
An interesting idea!
I use plain sunflower oil to keep my brushes ‘moist’ when not in use 🤗
So that raw linseed oil might break down your paint!
You need refined linseed oil OR you can use a product called ‘liquin’ by winsor&newton
There’s a few different choices of products from Winsor&newton
Dip your brush in oil for moisture 🥰
You did great, for your first time! So don’t be hard on yourself 😘
I LOVE oil painting now even though I am most known for watercolour painting 🥰🎨💜🌸
Helpful to know! I wondered if it was the wrong product, but without a craft shop within an hour drive, it was the best we could find at short notice! I’ll get some proper stuff online for future paintings, because I definitely want to try this again, even if it’s not for a video.
@@SarahRenaeClark I’m so glad my perhaps over enthusiastic comments haven’t put you off! I get sooo excited when it comes to art! I love painting and drawing and looking and being completely immersed in art! I’m (slowly) recovering from surgery so your channel has been fantastic 😘😘😘
At the very beginning when you first started painting, I think the problem is you didn't cover the canvas with Titanium White first. That helps the other paints to spread thin and evenly on the canvas. You seem to be painting on a dry canvas which is why yours isn't spreading. Edit: yep well you did put it on it just dried. Which is strange. Oil paints don't dry very quickly. Maybe you didn't put enough much on. Or you might need to thin your paints out a bit with a touch of the oil.it turned out great though!!!
After a few more hours of painting, I worked this out too and I think I’d do much better if I tried this again!
@@SarahRenaeClark Also, Bob used paint thinners RELIGIOUSLY to help thin down his paints. Putting a bit aside to clean in between everything is super helpful. It also helps the paint glide on better. Too much oil makes the drying time last forever.
@@SarahRenaeClark I know you will! You did great for your first time! Oil paints are not the easiest to work with for most people. Some it comes naturally to but not for the majority of us! ☺️
@@SarahRenaeClark
Bob used a medium mixed white he's called Liquid White. Basically oil with paint so the paints blend on the canvas. Wild Creates has a great video on how to make your own
Your first painting looks great!i always feel intimidated with new mediums and end up not starting at all despite having the minimal tools to start. Thanks for being my motivator, gonna start my watercolor!A small request,i'm also interested in HIMI gouche but most of the time videos don't show the learning process (real time instead of fast forward),hope to see you trying it!thank you for the amazing video as always!
I loved your "Bob" painting. I would love you to do another one! It was so fabulous! I learnt the dry canvas method many years ago but wet on wet looks like so much fun! I don't paint anymore though.
For your first time it really pretty!!
You did great! It's so much fun and also challenging to step out of your box, I think another interesting medium to try would be oil pastels. I love your content and am so glad I found you!
Yay!
This completely reminds me of when I first tried using oil paint back in 2013/14.
So fun and so frustrating at the same time.
I literally was rolling when they mentioned you can use mineral oil and you held up your bottle " Ooo! Is that enough?" 😂🤣😂🤣
I love learning new mediums and learning about how they fit together with the old mediums I've worked with as well👍😁
Spoiler: it wasn’t enough 😂
Yeah, I laughed too when I saw that, and then the HUGE bottle of linseed oil was the cherry on top for me. I just started oil painting a year or so ago (I was never artistic in the slightest before trying it out) I purchased a bottle of L.O. about that same size. At the amounts that I use, that one bottle will probably be a lifetime supply for me.
I think it would be cool to learn more about watercolors
You are so great, even when you're failing you're still so good!
It may sound a little mean, but when you said "I've never felt this uncoordinated in my life!"
I actually yelled at the screen "Yes!!! This is how we, the normal (untalented) people feel every day!" But it's just because I want all those unnaturally gifted people will see how it's like to be in our uncoordinated shoes for once. 😅
I loved the results and the process, don't know how you managed to save all of your pieces and make them so well, again, like in many of your videos. But I like watching you go through the awkward faze with us on video and still say you enjoyed the process. Thank you for that.
Love Bob Ross! I also love your sense of adventure in exploring art methods 😊😊😊
A good start with oil paintings :D
Your painting looks beautiful and when you paint with oil you can continue advancing
and correct a different case with acrylics...
I look forward to seeing what amazing techniques you will share with the community :)
Hi Sarah, I love how open you are at trying new things.
id love to see you try clay it would be so cool luv ur vids
the crisscross strokes are the nemesis of artistubers xDDDD great video, u had a lot of fun and so did i
Yes I am enjoying watching you explore new mediums!! Oil paints are something I have yet to try myself. I have watched so many Bob Ross videos, he is such a joy to watch. Couple possible tips: 1) pretty sure Bob uses a special liquid white to prep his canvas. He says it makes it slick. 2) pretty sure you can only use acrylic and oil paints, but only as oil over acrylic. Acrylic does not stick to oil but oil will stick to acrylic. So acrylic back ground would work. Happy painting!!
Your enthusiasm is infectious! , I really enjoyed watching this, like you, Ive always wanted to try oil paints but not known where or how to start! Now I have an idea of where to begin and the inspiration to do so. Thank you 🥰xxx
Looks like you really had loads of fun with this, and honestly, your paintings looked amazing.
I've been using oils longer than pencils or markers. In fact I'm still learning when it comes to pencils and markers 😬
As for trying something new, I gave charcoals a go for the first time the other day and loved them. I'm not sure if you've tried charcoals? If not, you should definitely give them a go.
The second painting is also quite nice the colors are alluring
You did way better than I did my first try with oil. Bob ross makes it look easy and so do you. I use acrylic to paint and even acrylic guache. I tried oil painting and started with a greyscale. I learned that the techniques I was used to when using acrylic was different than oil. With acrylic you can flip your brush over and it be the same color but when using oil if you flip your brush over the tones will be different.
Please do another Bob Ross painting! I had so much watching that! You made me want to try myself. As for what I'd like to see you try in the future...Have you tried paint made for glass? Like painting on mugs or pint glasses and cooking them in the oven to cure? I've done that for a couple of my friends as gifts, and it's really fun!
OMG, the second one is gorgeous!!
I would like to see you try watercolor painting Or gouache
Great job (as always)! Would love to see you try watercolors - or better yet, watercolor brush markers or watercolor pencils! :D
Cool vids, Sarah. i also tried pro pianting 2 months ago, i can feel your pian and relief. but you can develop skills at this very quickly than you think .
Love this !! U are hilarious I have been wanting to try oil painting but like u it is so different then acrylic painting . Ppl tell me bc they take forever to dry that u have time to blend and your paints won’t dry up like acrylic . I am currently trying to learn about oil mediums . I love this utube teacher for oil is In the Studio art instruction ! She is great . Thanks for the laughs and info
YESSSSS!!!! IT'S HERE!!!!!!! AND IT LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!!
Also also also~ they are not mistakes. They are "happy accidents." 🤗
You did really good!! I'm so impressed ✨
Sarah, You're doing great! The first art class I went to was an oil class. First lesson we only used one color. Sienna brown & mineral spirits. After, we used the basic colors, burnt sienna, Ultramarine blue, cadmium red, cad. yellow & titanium white plus a Alizarin crimson. gradually we added burnt umber, yellow ocher, phthalo green/blue Payne's grey & a brighter yellow. Flake white is good, but a bit dingy, I have it but rarely use any colors but the basics to get the color/hue needed. We used mineral spirits, & a tiny bit of Linseed. I love Bob Ross, I could watch him all day, but he paints his way alone, I'm never sure where his source of light is coming from.. he uses a gimmick, to do an entire work in very little time, because he practiced to be able to entertain with his method. Which is all well & good, but if you stand close to his paintings, they look like they were painted quickly. Some day if you'd like, we can do a quick oil via facetime or zoom. Oil, is about the easiest medium I know of. I would be glad to share what I know, & my first painting, is still on my wall... 48 years later. Keep painting!
you are my comfort channel, Sarah!! 💖
Awesome job Sarah, I love it.
Well done being brave and jumping in! =)
I would love to see you paint random things? Like objects? Or painting on wood!
Sarah, your Bob Ross painting is amazing! I would totally hang that in my home. I’m still having fun colouring, but perhaps I will give painting a go in the future. I definitely feel encouraged by your efforts.
The floral painting has such beautiful colours, and I can’t wait for my Colour Cube to arrive (I’m definitely enjoying my colour catalogue. 😊)
Do you ever use your new easel to draw or colour? I notice for these videos that you always colour on a flat surface, and I wondered if that is how you always work, or if that is what is necessary because of the camera. I also remember you having neck pain at one point and wondered if the ability to change the angle of colouring would help that. Thanks for letting me know, as I am looking at various table options for my colouring.
If anyone else has some advice on colouring tables, I would love to hear it. Thank you! 😊
I bought the easel for coloring, but always forget to use it! The desk helps with the camera but it’s also just a bad habit.
We saw you at Disneyland! (well DCA, in line at the little mermaid, and I didn't want to interrupt family time, so I didn't say hi ☺️) I totally geeked out about seeing you. My family teased me about how I was so excited to have just seen you there. We were visiting from CO, and to see one of my favorite UA-camrs about art at my favorite places added to the Disney magic. I'm excited to try new mediums too inspired by you.
Oh that's so fun! Next time, please feel free to say a quick hello!
Loved this. You are bold and like that you try new things. Something that I have tried before is using the same reference photo in different techniques to broaden my learning and really see how to approach the effect that I want in the technique that I need. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but it is fun. I normally do this using thumbnails (not the same as for the videos), these are mini paintings to establish shapes, color and light before attempting a larger scale work. If you want to learn more about thumbnails with oil paintings then watch the videos of James Gurney. His books are also a good reference. Thanks for the video!
What a great idea!
It turned out beautiful!
Very good amazing for a first timer I guess it's your artistic spirit that allows you to create such magnificent pieces
It turned out so beautiful. My first experience with oil which wasna couple days ago irritated me so bad. Now watching your video makes me want to give it a try again. It was hard because I didn't have linseed oil which I need to get before trying again.
Love you!!! Love your videos, but this 1 of the best videos. Love that you are incredibly out of your depth. I know you still did much better than most! Thank you for the laugh. Please, please do oil painting again with the right colours and brushes! So impressed. I am so happy that you enjoyed the process. However I super enjoyed your editing and humour in this video. Love you and soooo happy to see a new video and catching the video early. I cannot believe you have never seen a Bob Ross video. Seriously and sincerely well done!!!!
You can paint oil over acrylic (once dried) but not the other way around. So your options are either using acrylic only for backgrounds/color blocking, or completing a painting in acrylic and then using oil paint for some details or texture that you couldn't get using acrylic.
It would be interesting to see you try oil pastels (if you haven’t already). I use them on top of a base layer (soft pastel, acrylic or oil) for larger sketches, and use coloured pencils on top for details…I think you might like the last part!
Btw, you did really well here! I’ve tried a few of his (my mums came out better lol) he has his own brand of products that work with his video!
You should try oil pastels or modeling clay!! Love your vids!!
Love this series! I can’t remember if you have tried water color yet if not that would be fun to see. Other ideas resin art, pour painting, sculpture.
Great suggestions!
I had to stop painting with oil as I started getting an allergic reaction to the petroleum products! I recently purchased water soluble oil paints, but I have since found Chelsea Lavender oils mediums and cleaners! Gesso is NOT the same as liquid white that wet on wet oil painters use! NOT THE SAME! NOT interchangeable. I enjoy watching you create with new mediums, I hope you continue to create and share your art journey, thanks!
Wood burning art. Can be a cool medium attempt. As for the oil paints: those do not mix with acrylics (mixing the two is a big no in painting), layers need time to dry (days), layers can take longer to dry or less time depending on mediums mixed into the paints (galkyd=less time, linseed oil=more time), paint “application” impacts dry time (thicker paint will take longer, this painting done in video may take “months” to dry just based on how thick the application was), oil painting has rules that mainly factor into time (fat over lean is most important probably, meaning each layer needs to have more oil content mixed in otherwise cracking happens if top layer has less oil than bottom). As for the substrate (canvas), that requires prep work before an oil painting is done since oil will destroy the fabric or the wood (don’t get oil painting on raw wood that hasn’t been prepped). Prepping can be done by “sizing” and then acrylic gesso (oil can be applied “over” acrylic like gesso but never “under”, another big no). Also to keep note, environmental factors will impact the work such as humidity, dust, and vibrations. Oil paints can be stored when covered with wrapping (in fridge, keeping paint mixtures lasting longer). Gamsol is a common solvent used, pretty toxic so don’t breath it in or get it on skin. As for cleaning brush, you can use dish cleaning soap, I found it really gets the oil out while not really destroying brushes the same as solvents like Gamsol.
Been waiting for this since the color match challenge!
I’m an oil painter. My instructor thins (moisturizes?) his paint with turpentine. He’s painted for over 40 years so I definitely know he’s tried everything under the sun! Some might not want to work with turpentine but it does work like a charm to make the paint smoother and easier to work with and blend. Honestly-as an oil painter - I find it difficult to do a bob ross painting too!
PS- you can only use acrylic and oil together if you use the acrylic FIRST! You can paint on top of acrylic with oil but not the other way around 👍🏼
I enjoyed seeing your first attempts with oil paint. As you were trying the Bob Ross, I could see your error immediately, and was glad to hear you identify it yourself. While I have never tried oil painting myself (I am intimidated by the dry times), I have watched his "wet on wet" technique for years, which basically blends rich colored paints into a liquid clear or liquid white base coat (depending on the goal, any other color can be added to the base coat) for that glow in the background. In your second painting painting, you looked like you were picking up that technique.
If you want to return to oil and have another go, a suggestion for after your base image is formed: mix paint with paint thinner until it will run like ink (another technique presented by Bob Ross) to form a thin layer that will sit on top of your existing image without mixing into the other colors as it's applied. Mr. Ross would use this for wild tree branches in the distance and other fine details after the canvas had a good layer of paint on it.
I applaud your bravery! I also appreciate your comment on how painting is the reverse of pencil art in that the background goes in first. Every medium has its quirks. Thank you for sharing. You are truly skilled.
Love seeing you wear Jackie's shirt while trying this out. Hope to see you go way out of your depths and try out her SNACK box ^^
I love listening to Bob Ross when I go to sleep. His voice is so soothing
I would say you followed Bob's instructions to a T: you were BRAVE! Really brave! I know if it was me I would have despaired with that first painting in the period when you were struggling so much, and nothing looked remotely like what he was doing... but you kept going and ended up with a beautiful painting in the end after all. That's really inspiring (and educational!) to me. And I love this series of you trying new forms of art - please keep it up, definitely! Speaking of other art forms... I know this would probably not be a big enough challenge to make a video out of, but I'll still throw it out there: have you ever heard of Zentangle? Following the actual Zentangle method (as opposed to just doodling) is a combination of abstract art and meditation/mindfulness. It's great as a creative boost; it also helps me deal with chronic pain. It starts out in black & white on a 3.5"x3.5" paper - but from there, it expands into some amazingly creative & beautiful things. If you search it online you'll see what I mean!
Hii Sarah!! Loved this video and this motivated me to try newer mediums so thank uu 🥰🥰. Btw I would love to see you trying out gouache paint....I have heard that it is a perfect blend of watercolor and acrylic so will love it if u try it out 😁😁😁
Loving your painting videos, can't wait to see more! 🤩 You can paint oil over acrylic (dried) but not the reverse. Also try using Liquin as your oil paint medium (makes your oil painting dry overnight so you can continue working on it the next day!). 😊👏🎨
Thanks for the Liquin tip!
I would love to continue seeing you learn oils! it is inspiring to watch you learn. these are the exact obstacles the average person would encounter and feel discouraged about. No? Just me? 🙃
I’d love to keep learning too!
Ahh can’t wait to watch this !!
As someone who’s painted with oils for a very long time now I think you did really well on the first picture, I have never used large brushes when painting with oils or acrylics the widest brush I have used is 1/2inch the smallest is 0000 fine line brush once I have the background done I switch to 1 through to 0000 only yes it takes a long time but I spend the time building up the subject. I have never been able to use the Bob Ross style of painting every time I have tried my brain goes into a meltdown mode even when I have done acrylics I pain the same way as if they are oils.
I use to make a mixture of mineral spirts with linseed oil as my flow medium if using light to white colours you have to be light on the linseed oil as it has a honey colour to it and will change the colour of your whites and pale colours.
I recommend that you watch a few different artists who work with oil paints as they each have their own method of working in oils.
Acrylics can be used as your background base colour but once you start work with the oils for your main picture you can not mix the two together. If you do want to go down that rabbit hole try the water based oil paints as they may work together but not your standard oil paints.
Glad you enjoyed Working with oils I love using oils because they have a longer drying time and so it allows for better blending in the long run, as a rule when working with oils it allows for working on a project over a few weeks to a month. Oil paintings dry on the surface first but the oil underneath will take up to 8-10 weeks or more to dry so you will need to place the picture somewhere safe while it finishes drying.
Which means the second picture will take almost 3 months to fully cure as you were doing a tactile painting
Thank you for sharing your journey into oil painting 🤗🤗🤗you reminded me of how much fun it was painting with oils🤗🤗
Wonderful. Bob Ross was a great painter I do believe. He was so patient. Yours are very pretty
