This video was uploaded in 2012. Elon musk says at 14:50 "Full reusability in 5 years or so" 5 years later here I am in 2017 and SpaceX has just landed it's first reused rocket (Mar 30 2017) Bravo Mr Musk
Now it's 2018 and we have block 5 capable of ten reuses without any "refurbishment". Although to be fair he did say 'full' reusability and they have never recovered an upper stage although it appears that they are working on it.
The reason why he references the 747 is because it was a game changer making mass air travel real and affordable. His vision is to become the 'jumbo' spacecraft manufacturer to make a step change in surface to orbit cost reductions and high frequency of transportation. What we do and where we go is up to us, he just gets us up and away, through the hardest bit, the first few hundred miles of altitude and out of the atmosphere.
Somebody pls drop d background noise.love this but it needs to be louder voices than coughs..but love the speaker n d audiance goes to show w d right audiance elon's speech would be more appreciated altho its important to educate the mass... but i guess most wudnt be as keen.so more of these types of audiances speech would be easily understood by proper crowd n less stupid questions i guess..but seriously need to invest on sound engineers..not hard to find.every concert tours have 1.
Not to be unfairly critical. after the first and second stages have reentered into the atmosphere via the heatshields. then they have to rotate and face the engine nozzles into the advancing airflow. I have yet to see an example where an engine can be primed full of fuel then restarted via whatever ignition system while facing into the oncoming airflow. what would the velocity be at it's rotation? Whether or not it would be possible. it would be a finely tuned ballet indeed.
Agreed. Rotating station orbiting the Earth or Moon seems pretty neat. Hopefully by the time that's a possibility, radiation shouldn't be a concern and it should be comfy living.
Ahhh! Watching this video my mind just bursts with images of interplanetary spacecraft and a future space civilization that all got started by SpaceX. Like, how fucking cool would it be to be on a large, roomy ship that's permanently in space that's powered by a nuclear engine and uses extremely high velocity ion drives?
To colonise mars would need a world effort. All space agencies NASA, ESA, JAXA and the Chinease could come together and combine funding and research with private companies like SpaceX, Boeing and others. This combination of funding and collaboration coupled with innovative cost saving of private companies could achieve it.
To travel from Earth to Mars and then back to Earth, carrying landers, but carrying much much much nicer accommodations than just flying a single ship over to Mars from a single launch.
Ion drives are notoriously under powered. If you were thinking a ship the size of say the one in Wall - E, you'd need an engine the size of a small city to move the thing, but once in orbit you don't need mobility (Unless you plan on landing) so why would you even need an engine?
I can't say that supporting AMD is bad, but well they were quite bad for a while mainly due to management. Things are looking up but it looks not so much for the CPU's mainly gpu's servers arm etc
Mars has 1/3 of Earth's gravity. People born and raised in Mars will have *some* problems visiting (let alone living in) Earth. They'll weight 3 times more than their bodies are used to. That is one argument in favor of O'Neill space colonies. And (probably, long term), Mars humans will diverge from Earth's, becoming a new species. I would live in a 1g orbital colony without hesitating, but Mars seems good only for short periods, unless you're ready to live the rest of your days there. Go Musk!
In 20 years and beyond, robotic assistance will be sufficiently advanced enough to overcome that problem without anyone being able to notice that you're a native martian (apart from your martian accent, perhaps). And in 50 years, we'll might have medical procedures that can physically alter our bodies. If emerging technologies like gene therapy and synthetic biology will ever by deployed on ourselves, we will have to rethink the concept of our species anyway.
When a more expensive ticket is announced, then you can assume there will be more expenses. For now, 500k is the magic number. This concept is right, for sitting on a single planet for eternity would be pretty lame and impractical... and I don't see governments doing anything about it. Better to let private companies get started on it early. But, as you said, time will tell.
Elon has to be my favorite person on earth, ok second favorite (if you are reading this - yes, first is you my lovely wife, if you are not reading, then elon is:)

Elon Musk learns of KSP. So the legend begins...
I was there, and even got to chat with the dude. Good talk. Well .. more of a Q&A than a talk, which was great.
A great honour.
"Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly" my favorite rocketry term.

Lastindependentthinker what do you think now?

Agreed, struggling to hear what is said.
Mom worked hard untill 70 years old in this planet. I tears as I can't bought mom a glass of coffee boxes milk

Is there any possible way to get a transcript of this to read, not the terrible automatic UA-cam captions?
the audio is really terrible. If someone were to add accurate captions to this I would be forever indebted.
Where is the question about ksp?

14:20 He says they will fly back the first stage "in the next year or two". I find that hard to believe.
oisiaa ended up being about three
Lecture = teaching = speech
This man doesn't need to play Kerbal Space Program, he's doing it in real life. Lucky guy. I'll make do with stranding Kerbals on Duna though.
