That's by far the most common I hear. I have a hard time finding people that are ok with regular visits. They all want to text me when it needs to be cu, I can't stand that.
The same kind of crap happens with private tutoring. They want until the night before exams and they can't take the time to properly learn the fundamentals. My brain literally explodes working with such people.
When you finish cutting and the lady says “can I pay you tomorrow? My husband has the checkbook with him” next day you get a txt saying she’s out of town
The lie I hear the most is when I show up to do a quote the customer is always like “yea the last guy was in and out of here in like 15 minutes”. I’m just like “oh yea?” While looking at a hour worth of work on a 1/4 acre lot with tons of edging and trimming. Then they say “yep then he just stopped showing up” I say “really” they say “yea and he did it for 30 bucks” I’m thinking oh no wonder and say “I’ll do it for 50” then they look at me sideways and say “that’s kinda high don’t you think” I say “nope”.
I love when they say I live on a set income yet they live in a house twice the size of mine by their self and have a Cadilac in the garage. If you can afford all that you can afford another $40. A week for lawn care.
I did an estimate for a customer because the last lawn guy they had went out of business. I quoted her $35 and she said, "can you do it for $25? That was what the last lawn care guy charged me. I thought to myself, Really? Are you serious? SMH!
Seriously just had that happen, but she said the guy quit coming, before I knew it I said "that because he wasn't making any money ". Didn't get the job and really don't care.
This isn't really a lie but one of my memorable conversations and I actually didn't get the account. I did mow a place that was rather tough and charged $100 per cut. The owners sold the house and the new owner didn't call me to continue service. No big deal. Well they finally did call a couple months later and ask for a quote. I told them $100 per cut and they flipped out. Said the last guy cut it for $65. Knowing that he couldn't have cut it very much since the last time I cut it, I asked what was the problem with the guy cutting it now. They relied, because he cut it once and now won't answer his phone or return a call. I laughed and said it was because it's worth $100 to cut your yard.
Same as the trucking industry, if I’m on a trucking co and declares ban Krupp y and another co takes control, the last load from the broken company it won’t be paid! The new co is going to tell you, “That load is not from us, you need to stay on line with the banks to be paid off” That’s why everybody quits when a co declares bankrupcy
watching videos like yours while im patiently waiting to save up enough money to start my own business is both good and bad.. good because it gives me encouragement but bad because i dont want to wait...
Great video. I do 2 prepay credits. After I mow each time, I invoice each customer, letting them know that 1- the yard was done that day, and 2-how many credits they had left. Lol, I still have to text most of my customers to remind them, 2 days before the next cut, to please check your last invoice to make a payment, unreal. Not sure what the answer is. Maybe keep a card on file and charge the card for each mow?
I feel your pain my brother, my favorite one is when they wait until your in the back yard working and jump in the car and leave, or wait until you are completely finished and loaded up you ring the bell and they act like they didn’t know you were there! I didn’t hear you ring the door bell last week? Must of been in the shower......really! For 45 minuets??? Yeah sure
Great vid, I've got a customer who is telling me every lie under the sun just not to pay me. One thing she is telling me is how great my work is, well if its that great pay me.
I paid a tree service and they never finished the work. Never cleaned up their mess and the deficiency was around 600 to clean up the brush, minor damage to the house, and a tree that was not cut per contract.. not getting paid or not doing the work, it can go both ways.
You obviously contracted with a lowballer. A real tree service would not have done this to you or would have made it right. That's what you get when you hire bob's brother's son-in-law to save a buck.
The worst part is these guys dropped a heavy limb on the roof, it shook the house. Three months later, water was pouring through the ceiling and damaged the sheetrock. I had to pay a roofer to fix the leak. a bunch of screws were pulled loose from the impact on the roof from the tree company's negligence.
heavymechanic2 so if they were licensed and insured why did you pay to have it fixed. It sounds like you didnt do your homework and now you want to cry about it . You pay for what you get . I can put licensed and insured all over the truck and business card but that dont mean shit check them out first. Why dont you take them to small claims court to get your money back ? So why dont you put all the facts out instead of putting half the story then calling someone out just because they commented that you hired a low baller . Sounds like it to me.
There are lots of contractors who prey upon homeowners and are ignorant when it comes to responsibility per contract. I'm in the process of filing a civil complaint in District court through Due Process to enforce the contract and remedy toe property damage because this so called contractor never answers their phone, never finished the work and is a piece of SHIT!
If they are a problem, they're not worth having. Also, only work on a year round contract basis with a heavy early termination fee. Usually, with a contract, it's much easier to get your money. Bill them once a month, money comes in all year round. Thirty eight years in business here and that's how we've always done it. Give up the non payers. Let the non professionals take care of them.
How's this, i got a customer who always says "You know our postal service". Hers the issue, I CUT YOUR NEIGHBORS LAWN AND THEY USE THE SAME GOT DANG POST OFFICE YOU DO AND I GET IT EVERY MONTH!!
I run a fertilization and weed control business and I had an old guy call me three weeks after an app saying I must of over fertilized his yard because it’s all burning up. Mind you the temps went from 65 to 93 in 9 days without rain. He claims the irrigation is running. I did some investigating and of course soil was dry as a cork! Thanks but I won’t miss calling ahead to the hour and your little dogs too!
Learning so much from you guys on youtube! My son and I are starting up this coming summer. Your videos are among some that we are studying! Thanks for the great info! It's guys like you that have inspired us to begin our own youtube video log of our progress in this business. Thanks again!
I do private tutoring. A common problem during the summer is when parents want you to be around so they say they'll check with their child and let you know next week, then the next, the next, etc. In the meantime you're canceling all your summer vacation plans hoping for some work that never comes. Yes, I realize this happens because I'm desperate, but still.
Every day every week chasin down customers ! For compensation for the work you provided crazy thing is you know which customers take forever to pay but somehow you always do The work anyway 😩
Like you said, don’t argue with them! If the customer delays your payment request to do it pre pay next time if gets insult than expect he’s not going to pay you the last service. Try to find more serious and responsable coustomers
To address the "Check is in the mail" issue. All my customers pay a month in advance. Of all my customers, only 1didn't want to pay that way. Guess what? They were "Late to pay" consistently. This is also a good way to "Qualify" your customers and weed out the undesirable ones. It works for me and have a very good "Customer base". I never have to chase money.
Thats very true about the check is in the mail or they will say I will pay you Monday or in a couple of days I've been in the landscaping business going on 11 years and I think I have heard every lie in the book ...
The main one that gets me is when I say I am coming out and they say "we are good for this week" when I know darn well that it needs it but they are just trying to save money. Then by the time you get around to it it's turned into a forest and they still expect you to get paid the same despite how much longer it takes and the extra wear and tear on equipment
Lawn Care Life That's what my wife tells me, she says I need to stop being so nice! I am really enjoying your videos and recently subscribed. Keep up the good work!
Jason this video is off the hook!!!😂😂😂. But soooo true!!! Thank you man!!!! Best one I've had is I'll get you straight next time! I'm like you're going to have to pay before I mow next time!!!
+Lamont Hairston the guy who owed me money today told me that exact thing last time. If I don't pay you this time you know I'll get you next time. Now next time came around and he didn't pay
I have had a few people tell me when I give them a quote that they just had someone else quote them $5 lower than my quote. LOL I tell them "if I were you I'd hire him, he's $5 cheaper than me." They never hire the other mysterious quoter.😁
Lol good video. The one I like is the last guy was cheaper trying to get a better deal. Well he possibly could have been and that’s why u calling me cuz he’s out of business.
Honestly, it’s up to the lawn care provider to get a check, not that hard, easy clients will pay with a simple text, difficult clients just need a face to face reminder and super difficult clients get booted, sometimes without getting a check but that’s the price of doing business! Not worth the time chasing them rather chase new opportunities
"IT's a little long can you give me an iron clad quote over the phone based on that?" you arrive and lawn is 3-6ft tall with several heavy iron pieces hidden in the lawn....
I have started a lawn care business, I have 7 lawns, which brings me about $150. I have saved money from Previous clients which moved, I have new equipment, lawn tractor, echo weedeater, buying a new stihl blower, push mower, trailer, I am just having trouble finding lawns, I do not have a truck yet so I am stuck driving my mower up the street to find lawns, should I go door to door or what? Thank you!!!
the lie i hate is when dealing with someone youre trying to sell something to and potential clients that after hearing the price/seeing the product say "I'll get back in touch with you" or "I'll call you" or "I'll come get it xxx day" then never hear from them. leaving you hanging. I HATE that. I have other stuff to do than hanging around the phone in case it rings
One client had a friend cut her grass but he said he was too busy. He was only charging her $20 . It’s ok, not a lie but I had to keep my price at $30 to start. Anyway honestly I have the best customers! Monthly bill and they always pay sooner or later but they always pay.
I always carry a taser. All you have to do is just discharge it and the sound alone will scare dogs away. People wonder why I carry a taser to mow. But it's there to keep dogs back. Cause if the dog does charge you despite the sound of the taser you still have the ability to stun the dog.
Another one is the potential client gets you to discuss with them and feigns interest after hearing your price, spends countless hours discussing with you and then slashes the offer in half. They're hoping you'll give in because you've invested time into the deal.
I think everyone knows the guy who "used to be a professional" in whatever industry you work on and proceeds to tell you things that have never been true and insist you act accordingly.
Another bad thing about checks is that if a customer writes you a bad check and it bounces you will be charged a fee by your bank and it actually hurts your credit rating with your bank.
There is no way of knowing if a customer's account has enough money or not so I fail to see how depositing a check that bounces is something that hurts you.
A good one in Southern California it is when you ask them about what happened to the last gardener. The response is “they went back to Mexico” lol... That can either tell you that person never paid the last guy or they just stop coming because no money was being made. Apparently everyone here doing lawn care is Mexican lol... we have all types of different races Japanese, Koreans you name it. Good thing you have work year round here but you guys in the other states make more money just mowing because here in Southern California you have to add shrub trimming, weeding and mowing all in the pricing.
This is too funny. I resent an emailed invoice for a service i did. I just got a response from the customer. Guess what she said....."Sorry, I just sent the check out today." 😂 Are you clairvoyant?
Customer :how much for this yard? lawn guy 55!! Coustomer : the other guy dose it for 40... lawn guy : call the other guy!!! (One of the bigest lies I come acros as a landscaper!!!)
For the reasons you mentioned is the reason I am not in the lawncare business. The last person I did some work for didn't have the money to pay for the work I had to do, and claimed that she didn't have any dangerous items on her lawn which would be dangerous, which I found to be untrue. I ended up spending over an hour there cleaning up her lawn and in the end didn't charge her since she was a member of my church. I did tell her that if she let her lawn grow up so large again, she could look for her daughter, grandkids, or someone else to mow it for her.
+Sidney Mathious unfortunately those things happen sometimes. Thankfully most customers are great but every year I seem to have a few who want to take advantage of my business
Just some advice, if you get a call from someone wanting a price and wants to sign up but tells you all your competition is awful... You won't make that customer happy either. Don't sign a customer who constantly hires new companies for service.
I laughed my ass off watching a guy mow a lawn on his zero turn as the dog was trying to figure out a way to the driver. That dog couldn't get an angle on him because the mower turned so fast.
You can soon work out who are the bad payers and they need to be on an upfront payment or pay as you go. I have had customers say they used the wrong bank details, they have just come back from holiday so are short on cash this week, for cash customers they were out at the time. That said 95% of our customers are fine you just need to manage the 5% and not let them skew your thinking for the 95% if honest folks
New potential client: "If you'd give me a good price then I have a bunch of my friends that would hire you". ME: " Well, I really try to give everyone my best price and I appreciate the show of support but let's just concentrate on your job right now."
It's not "the check is in the mail." It's more like "my husband put the check in the mail." They say this to get it off of them and put it on their spouse. Sad but true.
Robert Matthews I hear that almost 100% from elderly customers, which is why I usually give a high estimate over the phone. Don't need those kinda customers
That third one, that happens all the time in friendships and relationships, but somehow it's absurd and unreasonable for people to have the mindset Jason does on this (which is reasonable btw, not saying he is being unreasonable). "ThEy DoNt OwE yOu AnYtHiNg" sure they don't OWE you anything, but it's common courtesy to communicate until the other person is an a-hole and gives you a good, legitimate reason to no longer engage.
I believe one of the rules in business is, there are some customers that you want your competitors to have.
I will give you a call when it needs cutting again! And that is a month later when it's out of control!
+Real Talk nice addition to the list. Hopefully, once a lawn business is established then we can avoid those type of customers
This one is fine with me, I do charge more.
Charge them at least 3x more or move on.
That's by far the most common I hear. I have a hard time finding people that are ok with regular visits. They all want to text me when it needs to be cu, I can't stand that.

Customer: "That's not my dog..."
:)

+Keith Dougherty great business advice. Can you price it the same as the last guy who went out of business?
Trying to put you out of business, too! 😂
Seriously just had that happen, but she said the guy quit coming, before I knew it I said "that because he wasn't making any money ". Didn't get the job and really don't care.
@@lawncarelife lol
No. $35. And move on
My husband cuts it every week but his mower just broke. I go there and theres Japanese soldiers hiding down there that don't know the wars over.
Lol
This isn't really a lie but one of my memorable conversations and I actually didn't get the account. I did mow a place that was rather tough and charged $100 per cut. The grass is really tall and they say, there is nothing to hit in there.
watching videos like yours while im patiently waiting to save up enough money to start my own business is both good and bad.. good because it gives me encouragement but bad because i dont want to wait...
I had a customer tell me the check was in the mail and five years later, I still haven't seen the check lol
Should be there monday
Lawn Care Life I guess Monday is never coming lol
If you give me a good price, you'll get a bigger job next year/ you'll get my family or neighbors for sure.
+Primo Landscaping that's a good one. Thanks for the addition to the list
I think alot of times they mean well, but I'm so tired of hearing this.
It's usually well meaninged. Tell them you'll give discounts for the referrals. E.g., one free session for every new client you bring in.
Had the "My dog is friendly." Anyway had to climb up a tree to escape the pitbull
I do cash or check upfront before I do anything at the customers house. It just avoids a lot of headaches down the road. Best of luck.
Great video. I do 2 prepay credits. After I mow each time, I invoice each customer, letting them know that 1- the yard was done that day, and 2-how many credits they had left. "I'll have check for you when you get here" , "I'll leave gate unlocked for you" , money's under the door mat
Great vid, I've got a customer who is telling me every lie under the sun just not to pay me. One thing she is telling me is how great my work is, well if its that great pay me.
get payment upfront. Any customer who isn't prepared to prepay isn't worth being your customer.
I agree being burned is a bitter drink to swallow.
There are lots of contractors who prey upon homeowners and are ignorant when it comes to responsibility per contract. I'm in the process of filing a civil complaint in District court through Due Process to enforce the contract and remedy toe property damage because this so called contractor never answers their phone, never finished the work and is a piece of SHIT!
This hilarious!!! I agree, you are worked up. Funny man!!! Keep up the great videos.
I really think you are a quality person rson Jason, you seem like a good dude.
If they are a problem, they're not worth having. Also, only work on a year round contract basis with a heavy early termination fee. Usually, with a contract, it's much easier to get your money. Thanks but I won’t miss calling ahead to the hour and your little dogs too!
#2 I used to be a mail carrier. I can't count how many times I heard that, usually about a snarling 90 lb pit bull. Just crazy.
Learning so much from you guys on youtube! My son and I are starting up this coming summer. Your videos are among some that we are studying! Thanks for the great info! It's guys like you that have inspired us to begin our own youtube video log of our progress in this business. Thanks again!
+ACME Mowing and Landscape glad to hear the videos are helpful. Best wishes on your new lawn care venture
Yup...that's kinda where it came from.....but more from the Wile E. Coyote fame...... Thanks!
My dad has always responded to the “my dog doesn’t bite” line with “yeah, your dog doesn’t bite YOU”
The guy last year only charge me 15 to cut well then call him. My price is 35.
Should have kept the last guy.
I P S
When they say this to me i ask them for his number as he can come and work for me haha
$5! That's an awesome price. Can I have his #. I want him to cut MY lawn!
I know its not funny to you ..... but it's so funny hearing you tell this story ! lol
I do private tutoring. A common problem during the summer is when parents want you to be around so they say they'll check with their child and let you know next week, then the next, the next, etc. In the meantime you're canceling all your summer vacation plans hoping for some work that never comes. "crazy thing is you know which customers take forever to pay but somehow you always do The work anyway"
Uuuum, no.
This is a great video. I'm sure all the lawn care pro's out there, are laughing their heads off. LOL. You are on point!! Can definitely relate.
The ones whose checks are in the mail are always the first to call for mowing lol.
Like you said, don’t argue with them! If the customer delays your payment request to do it pre pay next time if gets insult than expect he’s not going to pay you the last service. Try to find more serious and responsable coustomers
+Uni Sol good to hear from you. Yes, the overwhelming majority of customers are good customers. There are a few that are trouble
Number three is what gets me lol, we’ve all dwelt with that one.
I get told by new enquiries that there lawn guy retired all the time. 9 times out of 10 the customer wants to underpay or is difficult in some way.
They say ... you missed a week this month. 😩
+Adan vald Contreras true. Good addition. Thanks for the comment
Text them each time the lawn is done, that way you can show them
Had a pool guy miss 3 weeks but wanted a full months pay. I bought a robot to clean my pool. It never missed a week.
Always take pictures of your work
I feel your pain!
Thats very true about the check is in the mail or they will say I will pay you Monday or in a couple of days I've been in the landscaping business going on 11 years and I think I have heard every lie in the book ...

I started my own lawn care business, I start at 35, and extra cost for hedging, weed whacker, and fertilizer...
Ya, I'm guilty of that sometimes. Love your videos.
Hahaha! I love these videos!! You put the truth out there!
I hear you about the cheque in the mail,,,
Pay right after the job or before
I have had a few people tell me when I give them a quote that they just had someone else quote them $5 lower than my quote. LOL I tell them "if I were you I'd hire him, he's $5 cheaper than me." They never hire the other mysterious quoter.😁
Your a great guy thank you for the advice yer I love my job lawn Care hope your well love the videos too
I usually get its in the mail.
2) most customers introduce me to their dogs.
3) lost 2 customers for not paying.
My last guy did it for half that.
+Robert Williams that's a good addition to the list. I've had some people use a similar line on me
Then you reply well why isn't he here?
Lol good video. The one I like is the last guy was cheaper trying to get a better deal. Well he possibly could have been and that’s why u calling me cuz he’s out of business.

+Fixt100 good example. Thanks
The way we handle dog shit is mow around it.They get the point pretty quick.

"my dog doesnt bite me" lol. thats great
Do you think it is okay for us to carry pepper spray when cutting a lawn?
Can I pay you next week we just bought our daughter a brand new car, and they go gambling too. Ughhhh😎
Tell Amelia ,Thank you for the stickers and her writing was adorable. Okc
+Jesus Christ I'm glad you like the stickers. Amelia had a great time with that
This has to be one of the funniest videos I've ever watched
the lie i hate is when dealing with someone youre trying to sell something to and potential clients that after hearing the price/seeing the product say "I'll get back in touch with you" or "I'll call you" or "I'll come get it xxx day" then never hear from them. leaving you hanging. I HATE that. I have other stuff to do than hanging around the phone in case it rings
+Hazardra Lawn Care I had that happen today actually. Person on the phone says, can I call you right back. Many times you never hear from them
My favorite is... I water everyday, I don’t know why it’s not frowning.
Lol the funny thing is I could think of a specific customer for every scenario that you threw out there.
One client had a friend cut her grass but he said he was too busy. He was only charging her $20 . It’s ok, not a lie but I had to keep my price at $30 to start. Anyway honestly I have the best customers! Monthly bill and they always pay sooner or later but they always pay.
My dog was a puppy and chewed up everything that was loose and I turned the paper in and she didn’t accept it I hated that teacher
I always carry a taser. All you have to do is just discharge it and the sound alone will scare dogs away. People wonder why I carry a taser to mow. But it's there to keep dogs back. Cause if the dog does charge you despite the sound of the taser you still have the ability to stun the dog.
My favorite is "I was thinking more $15".
Another one is the potential client gets you to discuss with them and feigns interest after hearing your price, spends countless hours discussing with you and then slashes the offer in half. They're hoping you'll give in because you've invested time into the deal.
Lol this vid deserves a like more than any I've ever seen!!! Lol awesome
They want their grass cut but you have to get money
That's how we run our lawn service. Prepay or our service does not happen.
I get tired of dealing with non paying customers. When I get tired I message then this I hope you get richer with the money you owned me.
I think everyone knows the guy who "used to be a professional" in whatever industry you work on and proceeds to tell you things that have never been true and insist you act accordingly.
Ha ha here in the UK, we have customers like them too.
👍😁
this is y i charge upfront now .if they dnt lime it i dnt do their property
That's the way it has to be anymore. However, newbies can;t really start out with a pre-pay policy for the most part.
Customers will also say the dog poop will be picked up
The last guy only charged me $25!😂🤦♂️
Another bad thing about checks is that if a customer writes you a bad check and it bounces you will be charged a fee by your bank and it actually hurts your credit rating with your bank.
I have experienced those fees in the past.
I like the way you talk
Stinky Potatos GAAAYYYY 😂
You're cracking me up man!!
Very true!
I like your approach to that question.
It's not "the check is in the mail." It's more like "my husband put the check in the mail." They say this to get it off of them and put it on their spouse. Sad but true.
love ur vids
+Cacti88 thank you
....."the last guy didn't charge that much. ..."I'm on a limited income"
Robert Matthews I hear that almost 100% from elderly customers, which is why I usually give a high estimate over the phone. Don't need those kinda customers
Get to work, then. Paying people to mow lawns is not for the poor.
Robert Matthews No they are on a guaranteed income😊
Awesome
"No there is no dog chains or ropes in the grass you could run over"
The last guy mowed for $25/visit, why are you charging $50??” Yeah… doubt that.
Going through the first one right now. $150
Next time a customer says to you ‘my dog doesn’t bite’ ask them ‘ does he have teeth’?
