  • The mixture starts with one quart of boiled linseed oil; into that, squeeze approximately 1/2 burnt umber oil paint from the tube, add 25% mineral . Then mix well!

The stain I use is boiled linseed oil with a small amount of raw umber oil and mineral spirits.

I had problems in my learning months of using acrylics on carvings that the paint would lift with water based polyurethane varnish unless I let the acrylic mature couple of days. Then I found acrylic varnish and mixed some 30% with the paint colour which seemed to stabilise the paint and give a light sheen

I sometimes go back and re-dip some of my carvings after they have sat for years just to give them a fresh look.

Hi, can you recommend a varnish that will work if I want to seal any outdoor art from rain?
I have some wooden sculptures I want to paint and place outside and need a sealent that will protect the paint.

Forgive me, I'm a dunce..... But I do not understand the mixture... I know it's pinned at the top but to ME it's not clear.... ONE Quart of BLO... got that.... but squeeze 1/2 of a tube of Burnt umber oil....I CHECKED... THOSE TUBES COME IN DIFF SIZES!! So, what size do I take HALF out of? and 25% mineral..... 25% what?? 25% of a quart??

The Burned Umber tube, in the video, looks to be about 200 ml (7 Oz).
It's for tint and grain highlight so, a precise amount is not critical.
25%, is 1/4 of your final mix.
Or, a ratio of one part Mineral Spirit to three parts Linseed Oil.

Not as likely. I just always seal them in a bag before throwing them out.
