I just had a long conversation with my father about comics. He said he didn't read many superhero comics when he was younger, but he did read G.I. Joe. Then he said "But there was this one comic; I can't remember the name - Sergeant something. This muscle bound guy, probably with a flat top haircut or something. He was fighting the Nazis. I can barley remember it" A quick google search later and I say "Sergeant Fury and..." "Sergeant Fury! THAT'S IT!" Made me smile.
Comicsexplained is one of the only reasons i get excited about Dark Nights Metal...."lemme tell yall somethin man!"

Who else thought it was the return of Bruce Wayne in Dark Knights Metal
Spoona Benson Dude, I was so lost at first. I was like, 'I haven't missed an issue of DNM. When did this happen?'
I still think that Barbatos is the weapon Darkseid sent after Bruce Wayne in this storyline, he's not the Spectre or Shazam of that side of the multiverse, he's a hyper-evolved Apokoliptan weapon that happened to have all of Hypertime to play in (and keep in mind Hypertime is back as a concept; it was referenced in The Button for one). When it realized it would fail in its mission to destroy the present era DC as Darkseid intended just riding the omega time wave, it instead backtracked and started spinning off bits of hypertime, "what ifs" where Batman went bad, just spun that isolated timeline until he had a properly twisted Bat-minion, then destroyed the timeline (hence how in the backstory of the Dark Knights when the laughing one picks them up it's just before their whole timeline for no reason just dies off, because they were the only important bit in it). Then armed with a proper amount of tools as well as being able to reach in and influence Batman's story at proper moments, it sets the Metal storyline into motion as the ultimate evolution of its original goal, still largely Darkseid's monster but now something else after having nested so long in hypertime.

In my original read of Batman & Robin and Return of Bruce Wayne, that was what I thought it was too, several years ago.
Darkseid hits Batman with Omega Sanction to poison him with Omega energy and displace him in time, then unleashes the Hyper-Adapter to send after him.
Bruce accidentally creates the Bat Tribe using the skin of the giant bat that Savage killed, then goes on into the future where he keeps fighting the Hyper-Adapter.
Then, after bouncing to the future and trapping the Hyper-Adapter in the body of an advanced robot, he manages to send it back in time where it becomes the giant bat that Savage kills.
The reason I thought this was because they Hyper-Adapter was indeed at Thomas 'Dr. Hurt' Wayne's ritual to summon Barbatos, and was pretty much stated to be the reason that Thomas became immortal. That Barbatos was just the delusion of Thomas and the Black Glove to create context for the Hyper-Adapter, and that Barbatos never really existed.
But Snyder seems to kibosh that idea by explicitly state that Barbatos was a... god or something... of the Dark Multiverse, not a weapon of the New Gods. But, given how Darkseid is tied to Barbatos, being the reason that it knew about Bruce and started everything, maybe there is still a connection. Who knows?
Read batman 452 - 454. It gets even crazier. Barbatos created both Gotham and Batman.
It even goes so far as to say that Gotham is a dark dangerous city because Barbatos was trapped the soil thanks to stockman and thomas wayne of the 1700s.
Thanks a lot, I just read that, "Dark Knight, Dark City", was a great story by itself (by one of the greats at that) but it adds even more context to the current storyline as well as Return of Bruce Wayne. I'm still not sure it's not the Hyper-Adapter at works here in some way or another, that Morrison retconned it that the demon Barbathos summoned by the coven then was actually the Hyper-Adapter, but we'll see!
The way Morrison hinted after return of Bruce Wayne, after the hyper- adaptor got shot back in time it evolved into Barbatos.
Remember the hyper adaptor turned into a giant bat and was killed by Savage at the end of return. And Barbatos said when he fought Savage and lost and savage took his skin and Bruce wore it after.
Basically, Barbatos is the Hyper-Adaptor evolved. So Darkseid created Barbatos to kill Batman who was in turn created by Barbatos... Dc time travel just w/out the flash so its extra confusing lol.
Dc rebirth is the best thing coming out of dark nights metal

Glad to see you covering this story, Rob! My favorite issues are this one and when he's in the pirate era. The ending can be a bit confusing so it's cool to see you explain this for everyone.

I think what I love most about this event is how they've thrown off the shackles and completely embraced the crazy. They basically took the "BECAUSE I'M BATMAN!" joke and turned it into an inter dimensional horror story that spans the entire DCU.
Fans; "C'mon guys, no more Batman comics, we already have plenty."
Scott Snyder; "All I heard was *MOAR BATMAN!* Lemme tell ya somethin', Rob Corps, lemme tell ya somethin'! I'mma give you all the Batman you can FUCKIN' HANDLE!"
Was always interested in this arc but never got around to reading it so I'm happy to see you do videos on it.
I like how they reached back and added a little for to the that story arc. I and i know you as well remember when this issue came out an read it. At the time i thought it was cool but my favorite one from this story arc was the batman in the future with the insider suit. I thought that issue was great. But now that metal is added extra layers to that story and bring back so much post crisis stuff. Its just starting to blow my mind!

I have a an argument about Barbatos being Batman (Shazam Batmam).
So. In the Bible we have this guy "Jesus Barabas" who was freed in place of Jesus Christ. Ok? I brang it only cause his name, "Barabas" means "Son of Abas".
So. With Barbatos we have "Bar" and "Batos". Ok. So if "Bar" in Barbatos means the same as in Barabas, it means "Son" and, "Batos" just is the word "Bats" but deformed.
So Barbatos could mean "Son of the Bats". The Batman.
What do you think?

So, i haven't been reading the comics themselves, do I don't actually know if it's been revealed or not, but I have a theory about Barbados. The one theory stated on here is that he could be an evil Shazam / Batman. What if he's actually an evil Batman / Specter? He has a lot of the same look, he seems to have an ungodly amount of power and wield magic, and it could still fit.
The panel that keeps reminding me of this particular idea is used at 10:21 and MY GOD does it look like the Specter in so many of his appearances.

What if Barbatos is Bat-Doctor fate? Think about it, he has similar powers crossing dimensions and stuff like taking them to that pub Fate took them to, while in Injustice Fate mentioned being especially proficient with lightning.
And when you think about it, it makes sense, Fate's power is all in the helmet and in this case it's just a simple matter of Batman nabbing said thing and corrupting its power like Dawnbreaker. If he's capable of _that,_ then who's to say Bruce couldn't do the same. And add onto that it adds that other power not tapped by the DKM: Magic. You have power ring, speedforce, kryptonian, Atlantean, technology and celestial, so why not this?
