I have to say; the album art - the inverted cross made from police batons, that is really striking. Respect to the artist that came up with the concept.
If you like punk music and rap you should check out Ho99o9, they did some similar imagery with the batons.
@@BigGayIncorporated I rarely do, but maybe I'll give it a go. Thanks.
The st Peter's cross is more respectful than wearing a real one.
Agree. This is one of my favorite album covers ever.
Ooh I thought it was representing a sword
Between the white inverted cross of police batons and the two minutes of silence this is absolutely spot on
The venn diagram of people who dislike this and the people who got mad at Rage Against The Machine for being "too political" is a circle.
EXCATLY
it's wild, who would've thought a band called "zeal and ardor" (or "rage against the machine") would make unveiled, pointed social commentary with their music
It's not like the first few albums have a 17th century sigil for the summoning of lucifer or anything.
Somehow the drummer of SOAD is at the dead center of said diagram...
@@miserirken I mean Daron tried to paint Charles Manson as a "misunderstood tortured soul," so at this point it's probably safe to assume that 95% of that band's insightful social commentary probably came from Serj.
Whether it's in the past or the present, slavery must always be talked about, always be fought against. Bless you Z&A.
That symbol made of the batons is incredibly effective aswell, sad it ever had to be made, love it guys keep it coming.
Thats what brought me here. There was deep meaning behind that and I had to know what this was all about.
Look how people enjoy listening about slaves singing songs for the Satan to set them free because God can't help them get rid of their oppression, but when they make songs saying "we have enough of racism" many people get angry and say they won't support the band. They were making music abut racism all along. Now they just made more straight forward one.
That's the thing, though. I don't know how songs about slavery and centuries long oppression of black people isn't about race. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just laughing at the people crying about it. It's literally fine if you don't like or don't agree. Just walk away. It's not that difficult. But nah, they gotta whine and let us all know how hurt their feelings are hurt.
100% !
Talking about real slavery and racism is one thing, this is different because the subject matter is misinterpreted data for political gain. Seems they are just trying to capitalize on it.
@@ingsoc_8295 because mass incarceration of black people and other poc isn't slavery. 🤷🏻♀️
It's call institutional racism for a reason, my guy.
@@ingsoc_8295 I think you're misinterpreting the data....
How can so many people have such deep misunderstanding of what Zeal & Ardor have been about right from the very start? I guess straightforward symbolism and metaphors within lyrics are just lost on some.
Nuance and subtlety are lost on the narrow-minded. They themselves are incapable of using such things. That's why these people often try to get their point across by going on an emotional rant rather than making a calm rational argument backed by facts.
yeah, because slavery and satanism have a lot to do with today's police brutality and political far left movements
@@carniceroiberico4359 human rights aren't politics jackass, it's basic humanity
It's the same assholes who listen to Rage or System and get angry when the band members have leftist stances. Some people are just too lazy to care what an artist is trying to say and are more interested in aesthetic than truth.
I agree, it's quite surprising. And it's not like every song has been subtle, and these are the only explicitly political ones. I mean, have you listened to Stranger Fruit?! Even the bloody name is a political statement.
Z&A forever proving they are one of the most important bands. Keep it up.
They're probably not allowed to say this and no one else has so I will. Since they're donating all the funds from this song, if anyone wants to help raise money for the causes, just play this on repeat 24/7 on a spare device you have (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) Every play helps raise money for the causes.
I just discovered Z&A yesterday and I haven't been this excited about a new band in ages! Love it

Great feeling right? Had the same thing when Strange Fruit came out. Welcome!
@@autumnphillips151 just some random recommended facebook post about their new release today, and i was so bored i just googled them :D
The only other band I get super hyped for without question is Meshuggah and Behemoth.
How can people not appreciate this? It's fucking amazing, and exactly what it needed to be.
Imagine listening to angry black metal by angry black people inspired by angry black people's music and not bothering to understand the reason for the anger. Y'all barely getting the message? This is what Z&A are about.
From. Day. One.
Exactly! Their old songs were based on slave spirituals, where do these people think that genre came from?
Z&A was basically sparked into creation as a big "Fuck You" to a racist 4chan comment.

Pure art. Love what this band represents. Such an important band.
Ahh yes nothing like new zeal and ardor been a fan for a couple years now and i have to say one of the most unique sounding bands i have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I'm very excited for the new release! I loved the first two!
Also to all the people crying because it's political, being apolitical isn't cute and art espescially metal has always been political.
You don't need to announce your departure. Just leave and spare us your bullshit.
there's a very interesting rising energy to this song that just keeps building, like a pot slowly boiling.
what's scary is that it isn't until the end you realize that you're in the pot.

@@patrickfors815 The man they're raising funds for in the description has been convicted of sexual assault. Don't get me wrong, there is racial injustice in the world and it needs to be brought to light, but we can't keep making criminals our martyrs and the faces for the cause. If anything we should be raising money for the black business owners who have had their businesses burnt to the ground. As for Floyd, I was out there chanting blacks lives matter too until I saw the chest cams. He literally overdosed while being placed under arrest. I don't like anyone dying but we used that as an excuse to destroy our cities and further racial tensions. I just think we're going about it wrong, is all, making heroes of the wrong people and real change won't happen until we do this right. We're taking steps backwards imo which is a real shame. Sorry for the long reply, it's something I'm passionate about which is what drew me to Z&A's music to begin with but what's going on now is nothing like rising against the masters when our forefathers were slaves.
I don't agree with the politics of their message but it's without a doubt good music. Oh the beauty of music, Whatever I want it to be.

How long have you been listening? Why did you think he often talked about the origins of the music the way he did? Why do you think he used the sound of chains and the images of slaves back on his soundcloud. You weren't listening.
Elaborate.
The culture war is real man lol I can 100% understand why you feel that way. It's the times. Things are changing and this has been long coming. Give new meaning to old words. Appropriate popular sentiments and redirect them. We are seeing aspects of each other we didn't see or need to see before. People can have opinions and I don't have to share them. Hell, I can deem those opinions harmful if I have enough reasons. Nothing about your statement is racist or any of the other mehcists. Hypothetically, if all this was true, the morality of the state murderning the person you describe without fitting justification is not only questionable but not there. Except if you weren't talking about this ethical issue but much rather about the victim and their traits, which would make your comment an argumentum ad hominem :)

If Z&A feel compelled to validate a very specific ideology, that's fine. I am no satanist, leftist or racist. The art was cool. The history of the blues and its old connection to the devil, plus the slavery that caused the colored hardships and the western conception of satanism in music. Your ability to pick up on all the nuances that overlapped in those previously disconnected subjects has been amazing. That is no longer present in pieces like this one.
I don't validate art on the basis of its morality. Given that morality is a very malleable metric. You are not doing good with this music and if you were doing it, I don't care just as much as you don't think about how your expression will be perceived, or at least that's what you'd bet on to create true meaningful expression.
This is not meaningful or nuanced. It feels like a bad attempt at expressing the grief blacks feel. It smells like propaganda. You could create variability. You could do stuff that pokes holes from all sorts of angles and allow light to be shed on the ongoing matters. That's not happening though. You are possessed by a very narrow and rigid narrative and its reductionist approach to reality has turned you into a pamphlet.
You clearly haven't been listening to their previous music. Z&A's music has been a way to connect the roots of blues and metal, as well as shine a light on the religion pushed onto the slaves, (and most of the world's population for that matter) and an alternate root that they could've take, satanism. Their Album Stranger Fruit pays homage to Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. Billie's Strange Fruit talking about the lynchings taking place at the time and how no action was taken towards justice for them. Stranger Fruit goes over the same unjust killing of black people, this time by shootings. This is an expression of grief and anger, that people like you continue to invalidate the struggles of the Black Community all over the world, especially in current America. You missed the point. Also,
"colored" is an outdated term. . Learn about POC struggles, about the privilege people have, the injustices going on and then come back and listen to the pain represented in this song.
