1989 Phillies vs Pirates

- This is the ESPN Classic version of the famous "Jim Rooker" game. The Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first and Rooker made a statement that he would walk home if the Pirates lost. (Spoiler Alert!!!!)
The Phillies come back and win the game and Rooker kept his promise later that year and walked from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh for charity. This upload does not have Rooker's statement but does include at the end a brief clip explaining what happened. Most of the top of the first inning is missing, I don't remember if I screwed up or ESPN started the coverage at the time the video starts. If anyone has a full version of this game please contact me. I do not own, nor profit from this upload. All rights to MLB.
Steve Jeltz: 5 career home runs in 1749 at-bats. He hit two of them in this game.

I was at this game, sitting in the 500 level over the Phillies dugout. Tons of people left before the Phillies even batted. We had a great time and my buddy, a Pirates fan, was rooting for the Phillies by the end.
Probably the greatest game I've ever been to.
Ah, wish I could go back to these years. The Phillies stank, but nothing like hearing Harry an Whitey call the game or even listening to the Phillies on the radio while fishing at Pecks Pond or Lake Nockamixon with my older brothers an my dad.
I would love to hear Whitey and Harry call this game. They must have been losing their minds. I know those of us in the stands did. Best regular season game I ever went to.
The only relief appearance of the season for the injury-plagued former A's, Steve Ontiveros (Not 3B from the mid-70's). According to the card of those days, he came back from "ligament and bone-spur surgery on his elbow," and the Phillies took chances. He almost needed additional 5 years to be a full-season player in MLB from there. What a career.
I remember Rooker making the comment listening to the game on KDKA 1020 radio in Pittsburgh way back then.

Right you are! What an episode.
Less than a week later almost the identical thing happened again at the Vet when the Mets scored 8 runs in the first inning and the Phillies scored 7. Mets ended up winning something like 15-11
Listened to this game on the radio. Also remember when Rooker made good on the walk from Phillie to Pittsburgh for charity.
I enjoyed baseball so much more in the 80s.
Loved it thanks for these Phillies Memories...
