  • A short video to capture the Swiss Paddle Steamer Neuchâtel. The video includes many shots of internal areas of the steamer giving a sense of her character.
Neuchâtel was withdrawn from service in 1969 and her engine was removed in 1972. After many years of use as a floating restaurant Neuchâtel underwent an extensive restoration programme lasting several years.
During her restoration she was fitted with a new engine and steamed for the first time since her withdrawal back in the late 60s on 27th November 2013. She re-entered passenger service in 2014.
Built by Escher-Wyss, Neuchâtel was launched on 9th May 1912. She is the last half-saloon river-type steam boat in Switzerland. She measures 48.5m by 11m, and her passenger capacity was 550 as built (now 300). She was originally powered by a two-cylinder 350hp compound steam engine, but in 1954 was converted to oil-burning instead of coal.

Thanks for the film, PSPS . My most amusing memory from the 60s is standing on a pier in Lac de Neuchâtel, with my brother, and giving a friendly wave to the PS Neuchâtel. It was in the middle of the lake cruising along, and to my horror, turned towards the pier where we were, to pick us up. Much as I would have loved it, we were just hitch hiking through and had very little money as students. I even remembered the name of the lake. I’m a member and have sailed on both the Waverley and the Maid of the Loch in the 1960s - still unfinished business.

Glad to see a ship *back* in service Rather than being in the scrapper!
