I don’t bury my dry worm chow (birdseed, neem seed meal, expired grains or other dry foods, sometimes I even dry out bread and pulverize it into the worm chow) because it either gets clumpy or warms up. I feed it on top and mist it down, cover with newspaper and possibly plastic bag. I run many of my bins in a modified wedge style, so if I find full shreds of paper I put that on top and then feed on it, which ensures those things get taken care of. I think when you have a worm ball in a bin you are migrating well, then remove it to reduce the number worms in that bin. The lower population tricks the remaining worms to increase laying cocoons if the new side is moist. The worms breed a lot on the “topside”, so I have great luck with wet newspapers on top to encourage them.
That is true I find cocoons on the top all the time.
The mixed worm bin is my favorite. 🙂
Yes, your diversity and inclusion bin. It is awesome
I like the way you split the bin and harvest one part to let them migrate to new bedding. That's the way I like to do it as well. I do use the light harvest method to remove a part of the worms to keep them growing and producing cocoons. Thx for sharing, like your vids.
Thank you 😊🪱👍🏼
My favorite worms are the red wigglers. I found a great place to harvest new worms. Find you someone who keeps a horse and ask if you can dig in their manure pile. Down near the bottom where it really, really stinks, that's where you'll find them by the millions. I also have some nightcrawlers that are probably a foot on long, but when I find those, I toss them into my outside garden, because I think they are better out there for some reason.
Yes that is an a fun conversation to start. Can I rob your horse poo?
Beginning European nightcrawler farmer here. 2 weeks so far from some Walmart rescues.
Good luck. Feel free to ask questions any time. I have a whole play list about my ENC.
@@PlantObsessed thanks! So far, I have 160 worms in a 5 gallon bucket bin. I have a couple 10 gallon Rubbermaid totes when I need to expand. Started it a week ahead of time by soaking coco coir and shredded cardboard in worm tea and added some of the steeped castings to get microbes working. I noticed a couple cocoons when fluffing the bin last week, so that’s a good sign. Definitely won’t have a system as big as yours, but the two Rubbermaids and the bucket should yield me a decent amount for my purposes. I listen to your channel a lot at work and it’s very helpful!
Mould is good for worms, helps break down food to manageable chuncks for them. As long as it doesn't matt together you are good.
Thank you. I am still learning. 😁
Ain't we all, you on the right path though so all good 🖖
This just goes to show you that worms bins have distinct personalities. Lol, i’m going to have to remember that “future Ann“ trick!
~ Sandra
Lol, I was integrating the casting to help them out and thought I should film this.
" . . Cover that up, so it doesn't attract any flying insects" . . . I feel so stupid. I have raised worms for probably 10 years just because I think it's fun but I always top feed and I always have fruit flies all over the place when I lift the lid. I'll try burying this stuff. I have an extremely high IQ and am autistic and sometimes I think that means I miss the obvious. Duh! New sub.
Lol I also seem to miss the obvious sometimes. I am always learning.
LOVED that screaming outtake! Made me laugh.
Yes it is how I feel when I loose footage.
Hi Ann, Greetings from Windermere,
Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
My Can-O-Worms is filled with Red Wigglers since 2007. The small bins and Oblong Planters I started had Volunteers from the Can-O-Worms.
Worms DO do what they want 🤣
I think the alfalfa is the reason for mold since that's the only food I'm not using and I don't have mold.
BTW...have you tried using your Avocado seeds to make a delicious tea first? Cut in quarters, boil in water for a few minutes, remove pits and add a little sweetener. It's tasty and healthy and you can still give the pieces to the Worms 🪱
Wow no I have not tried avocado seed tea. I'll have to try that next time.
@@PlantObsessed It has a nutty taste 😋
I’m new with worms and have red wigglers. I started in February and have learned much. Each month I add another bin sin the population is growing.
You will be like me and have a house of wigglers ok n a year lol worm farming is addicting
Alfalfa will mold if consistently wet, so do most bedding materials.
Thank you!
I only add oatmeal /corn meal one time last year and I got a lot of mold in one of my containers, few days later y worms start dying, showing signs of the casting went acid...after that I don't feed them nothing but fruits, carboards, coffee, eggs shelves and some vegetables.
Yikes. That is terrible. For most of my bins I use my left overs but lately I am low on veg scraps. I will be careful not to overdo the chow.
Red wigglers, new to worms, doing great thanks to your channel!
Welcome to my worm family 😁
Great discussion on the migration efforts! Uuuugggg, I hate when the camera does that! Hilarious transition though!! Back to the future🤣Red wigglers are my favorite as well!! I haven't had too much mold on my worm chow but I do tend to see it in there longer if I clump it up too much. Yay worm ball!! Great video!!🪱🪱🪱
Thank you. I need to switch over to new batteries I think. The old ones overheat more. Thank you for watching 😃
In bin #3, that was a nice evacuation of the castings 👍🏻 too bad the camera pooped out
In bin #2, I get peeved too when I let paper shreds get mixed in with my nice finished castings.. hehe!
In bin #1, I have a feeling you'll see fewer wormies in the finished castings next time you check in on them
I hope so, it's bad enough I screwed up the first migration.
I have red wigglers -my first bin 🙂 it is 5 weeks old today - still learning ALOT - I tried making a nursery bin - Dont know what went wrong 🙄 but the 40 wigglers I put in was all dead the next morning 😞
Sooooooo SAD!!!! Went back to drawing board and ordered stuff from your bedding video.
Love your videos
I would say start over but don't try to do a nursery bin for 6 months. The ecosystem needs to build up. Then in the future when you split the bin take some of the old casting with you to the next bin. Good luck 🤞
I have redwigglers, recently bought Anc's not much about 50 just to see how they work, and basicly for curiosity
The ANC like it warm and lots of bedding. Good luck worm farming😃
Ive heard that i have them currently with my redwigglers in a small room in my back yard, currently having cold temperetures, but gradually warming up as we approach spring
I don’t know what I’m doing so I should watch your videos more often. I thought my castings were just too wet.
I make mistakes all the time. That is how I gain experience to get these ideas on how to fix. Them
I believe most of the mold your seeing is from the grain more than alfalfa however alfalfa does mold but not that extensively.
Good I have a big bag I'd hate to think it is causing a problem. Thanks for letting me know.
I’ve had mold when I added alfalfa pellets to my prepared bedding. It makes sense alfalfa meal would mold too.
Some of the people said maybe i didnt have enough moisture in the bin for the worms to use up the alfalfa. I need to get a new sprayer.
I keep my alfalfa cubes outside in a covered area but it’s very humid here zone 10b. The alfalfa has some mold on top but I just crush it and feed it to the wee uns.
The stuff I bought was kinda old. Maybe it came with some of its own?
Perfect timing! I have a sticky bin because I left it too long.
it is hard to fix for sure. I have an old video where i gave up trying to dry it and rinsed all the casting off the worms. that was a mess
I've had oatmeal mold if the bin is moist. I think any grain can do that.
True, you are totally right.
Only RW. First 300 came from then discovered i should buy from WM. Turned out all were RW
That is good. 👍🏼🪱😁
I feed the worms when they have consumed all the previous feeding. But they have not consumed the bedding. Why do we keep adding bedding at each feeding? I'm a newby and having lots of fun.
I add more bedding to help bulk up the bin volume. The bedding wont be able to be eaten right away. I think it helps to let the bin critters work on it first then the worms can slurp it up when it is broken down enough.
@@PlantObsessed Thanks.
Mold is good. Perhaps the other worm chow you had was made with grain that was treated with some sort of anti fungal agent. Like the white bread that doesnt mold after 6 months at the camp... the mice don't even eat it so it cant be good for us or the worms.
Yikes, treated bread? I hope that is on the label.
@@PlantObsessed The flour is treated. Ever wonder why white bread doen't mold?
@@tonygrant5745 lol I haven't eaten white bread since I was a kid. Now that you mention it they do say it's bleached.
Any way to entice a pig or steer into the back yard … we need freezer meat… lol
No
I havent collected castings before but this is the first time i heard of clumpy castings! The castings I see in my mature bin look like theyve eaten peat or cardboard and have fluffy poo..anyone else see that? Im disabled so I tend to overfeed and be moist or underfeed and dry out..its also super dry here..ive used AVs techniques mostly but kinda let the bins be. I need to clean yhru them one day and try to be more prodictive about it. 👍
Everybody has their own issues with their environment. If you live someplace dry that is likely helping you keep them loose. My basement is always between 40-75% moisture. Brick floor 200 year old house. So my castings become overly moist. You are lucky to have fluffy worm poo. Don't fix what is not broken. I watched all the worm people I could find when I started. I find a use for their experience every day. Thank you for watching 😃🪱🪱
@@PlantObsessed oh certainly. I watch a lot of gardener info but not for 18% RH through winter lol i garden and listen and appreciate finding you today! Thanks for reassurimg me the worms arent broken he he I guess they get a lot of fiber 😘 Im just used to whats bought in a bag. Happy easter!
I am a noob, only 1 red wiggler bin and 1 euro night crawler bin, both from Jim's and thats where the BSF came from, with my European's. I like both a lot, but the red worms are chow hounds for sure.
you got BSF in a compost worm mix? wow. I get them seasonally in my outside compost. I wish it was warm enough here to run a full time BSW year round.
@@PlantObsessed I live in southeastern Louisiana and it is warm enough here and I have looked into it. Think I could even get food waste from the diner I used to cook at.
@@NewbCoinNerd that would be awesome. People sell frozen BSW larvae for really good money for treats for birds.
@@PlantObsessed I know, also the oven dried larvae, $50 for 10lbs is nice
I have been looking at the pritapod, it’s a big BSF compost er that can produce enough live larvae for 25-35 chickens a day and I have a large empty shed in my back yard that could fit 6-8 of those in it and be kept warm enough in winter with a space heater
I've seen a little bit of molding on alfalfa when there is less moisture.
It's a new thing for me so you think I should add extra water when I feed it to prevent thi
@@PlantObsessed only if you don't cover the new bedding. I would spot cover the bedding with bubble wrap
@@ontherocksinthesoilmichael6739 I swear the moisture issue drive me nuts. One minute too wet the next too dry.
@@PlantObsessed well a month of forced as AV says foraging can unbalance moisture more than some think.
Hi
I am new in this.
Kindly share how many days take such compost prepare.
To make finished casting it takes about 8 months. It takes 2 weeks to make the prepared bedding that I use.
haven't had alfalfa mold, specifically. We've had our dry feed with alfalfa (all of ours incorporates it) mold when we've overfed and/or buried it too deeply or in too thick of a layer. I don't really think it's a fault of the alfalfa.
One thing that might be an issue when using alfalfa is allowing it to heat up by feeding in too thick of a layer or buried too deeply with a lot of moisture present. (We run our trays a bit moister than do you as we are after more reproduction than castings. Your mileage may vary.) Wish I could give you a more definitive answer.
Excellent video, as per usual - camera glitches notwithstanding.
I do hope you will share your experiences as you continue experimenting with the alfalfa. Are you finding the worms eat more of the bedding when you have incorporated alfalfa in the mix? I think the higher nitrogen content stimulates this, meaning you may need to cut back on the dry food a little bit. We're still learning on this, too.
I bought a big bag of it as it was on sale so I imagine I have enough for a year. That should be enough to test pretty thoroughly. I am going to get a good sprayer for the basement so I can add moisture when I add the chow. Thank you for the help.
What kind of shredder do you use to shred the cardboard? Where can I get one ? What specifics do I need to know before buying one?
I do have an Amazon link in the description. I find the 18 sheet ones work best. The biggest thing to remember is to clean out the top with a vacuum every few months. I didn't do that with my first one and I fried the circuit board. Too much dust
Hiya Ann. I hv red wigglers...doing quite a job but now hv pill bugs in the bin..I know they r composters....but are way too much in my bin. What do u suppose is the reason? N how do I rid them off my bin.....?
Pill bugs are shredders. There might be too much food in there for the worms. When I see a population increase of the other bugs it is usually because I have over fed.
P.S. that would be for Duroc pig and a red angus if possible👍🍺
Still no
