I don’t bury my dry worm chow (birdseed, neem seed meal, expired grains or other dry foods, sometimes I even dry out bread and pulverize it into the worm chow) because it either gets clumpy or warms up. I feed it on top and mist it down, cover with newspaper and possibly plastic bag. I run many of my bins in a modified wedge style, so if I find full shreds of paper I put that on top and then feed on it, which ensures those things get taken care of. I think when you have a worm ball in a bin you are migrating well, then remove it to reduce the number worms in that bin. The lower population tricks the remaining worms to increase laying cocoons if the new side is moist. The worms breed a lot on the “topside”, so I have great luck with wet newspapers on top to encourage them.

I like the way you split the bin and harvest one part to let them migrate to new bedding. That's the way I like to do it as well. I do use the light harvest method to remove a part of the worms to keep them growing and producing cocoons. Thx for sharing, like your vids.

My favorite worms are the red wigglers. I found a great place to harvest new worms. Find you someone who keeps a horse and ask if you can dig in their manure pile. Down near the bottom where it really, really stinks, that's where you'll find them by the millions. I also have some nightcrawlers that are probably a foot on long, but when I find those, I toss them into my outside garden, because I think they are better out there for some reason.

@@PlantObsessed thanks! So far, I have 160 worms in a 5 gallon bucket bin. I have a couple 10 gallon Rubbermaid totes when I need to expand. Started it a week ahead of time by soaking coco coir and shredded cardboard in worm tea and added some of the steeped castings to get microbes working. I noticed a couple cocoons when fluffing the bin last week, so that’s a good sign. Definitely won’t have a system as big as yours, but the two Rubbermaids and the bucket should yield me a decent amount for my purposes. I listen to your channel a lot at work and it’s very helpful!

I have raised worms for probably 10 years just because I think it's fun but I always top feed and I always have fruit flies all over the place when I lift the lid. I'll try burying this stuff. haven't had alfalfa mold, specifically. We've had our dry feed with alfalfa (all of ours incorporates it) mold when we've overfed and/or buried it too deeply or in too thick of a layer. I don't really think it's a fault of the alfalfa.
One thing that might be an issue when using alfalfa is allowing it to heat up by feeding in too thick of a layer or buried too deeply with a lot of moisture present. (We run our trays a bit moister than do you as we are after more reproduction than castings. Your mileage may vary.) Wish I could give you a more definitive answer.

I do hope you will share your experiences as you continue experimenting with the alfalfa. Are you finding the worms eat more of the bedding when you have incorporated alfalfa in the mix?
