    This was a game that came on the exact same disk as John Romero's "Dangerous Dave", and as you might expect, this game was made by John Carmack, both of whom eventually left Softdisk to form Id Software.
    Like the Dangerous Dave games, the original Catacomb games are now maintained and sold by Flat Rock Software. This one's always been freeware, though the pseudo-sequel "The Catacomb", the one that comes with a level editor, is not. :P
    ------------------------------------------
    Additional Information and Corrections:
    * The Catacomb games are now available on GOG! For $6 you get literally ALL of them: Both 2D games, the original 3D game, and the trilogy! www.gog.com/ga...
    * Here's a quick link for anyone who wants to grab a free copy of this game specifically: www.classicdosg...
    * Yeah, I know the Goblins and Orgers are more red than purple. TBH, it's hard to tell when you're racing along in this game because all you see are purple walls contrasted by green floors the entire game. x_x;
    * One interesting thing I found out about while researching this game is that Adrian Carmack, who helped with a lot of graphics in Id Software's games, isn't actually related to John Carmack, despite sharing the same last name. :o

    The sequel to this game, called "The Catacomb" (not confusing at all!) is actually included in the 3D Realms anthology! It has some nifty puzzles and the action gets far more intense. I consider myself a DOS whiz, but I still can't make it all the way through the last ten levels.

    "Strafing" was something the NES port of Smash TV had to do to be playable with a single controller (although I think that would date to a year after this game), though it offered a "Double Fisted Action" two-controller mode.
    Also, I think this could well be the first PC game I had ever seen as a kid. I didn't know what it was, I just remember the green floors and pink walls.

      It reads, doesn't it?
      Doesn't look pretty but no mistaking what's floor and what's wall

    Not even close to the first pc game where you can strafe. Im pretty Sure the original wolfenstein had twin stick keyboard distribution. With a serie of keys for moving, and a series for shooting in different directions

    The version of this game which is contained within GOG's Catacombs Pack, features 30 levels.
    It is the version i am currently paying, but i am stuck at level 10.
    Has anyone got past this level?

    "Orgers"? Are you sure you didn't mean "ogres"?

      English is hard, even when it's your primary language. :P

      They are LITERALLY called "Orgers" in the text file. So Kris is absolutely correct with his pronunciation.
