  • On 4/26/2024 at approximately 2 pm, Station 45 and multiple mutual aid units were dispatched to Cemetery Street in the Borough of Jersey Shore for smoke from the rear of the structure. Chief 1-45 responded and arrived on scene within minutes of dispatch, confirming a working fire in the rear of the structure. Engine 4-45 arrived shortly after the Chief and crews began search and fire attack simultaneously. Rescue 45, Engine 5-45, and Brush 45 also responded on the alarm.
    This video was from the dash of Chief 1-45's vehicle and shows the first 10 minutes of the incident from the incident command point of view.

    This appears to be a volunteer department. A very well trained and organized volunteer department. These firefighters didn’t have to be told what to do or micromanaged. They were on the ball and as additional firefighters arrived they jumped right in. No one was running around unsafely, PPE was being worn by all officers and firefighters actively involved in firefighting.
    Command wasn’t wearing PPE but it appears he was readily recognized by all firefighters, EMS, and Law Enforcement. I’m not going to criticize anything about this response. There are always things arm chair quarterbacks can be critical about but I am a 30+ year volunteer and I think they all did a great job. Well done.

    Great work guys. As someone who is very critical about radio operations I would suggest getting a second radio so you don't have to change between dispatch and fireground possibly missing radio traffic. Another quick tip is do some radio testing and find out where your portables lack coverage. You were very static on the dispatch channel and could not make out what you are saying, use the vehicle radio for dispatch.

    I have a few questions? Why would the first line go to side C and the second line go to side A? Were these separate apartments or the same house?

    Maybe they did a 360 but it wasn't on the video. Seemed VERY short handed. One guy went in by himself to search while the other geared up..not a good practice. Never heard a primary for the duplex on the left on the one on the right. Seemed like a lot of "single person" actions.

      Appreciate the watch. A 360 was done before the video starts. You are absolutely correct that we needed more manpower. This is an unfortunate reality for most rural areas. Regardless of the manpower available, the same tasks need to be accomplished. Despite these challenges, both duplexes were searched and the bulk of the fire was knocked down within the first 15 minutes with no injuries to occupants or our members. You have to play with the hand you are dealt.

    Most Fire Departments in N.J. are VOLUNTEER!! Also, where in NJ is the Borough of the Jersey Shore?? I'm originally from Fair Haven, NJ and never heard of the Borough of the Jersey Shore before!

      We run 2 engines and a heavy rescue, so we rely on mutual aid for a truck. Unfortunately, this is usually 10 to 15 minutes behind. Truck work is mostly a state of mind, so we are able to split crews and handle it.

    Ground ladders from the engine should of been put up and one member could of taken out those front four windows while suppression crew put water on the fire just saying

    • @citizenshosecompany
      @citizenshosecompany  Місяць тому +2

      Nobody would disagree that it would have been nice to have ladders up earlier for both egress and ventilation. Unfortunately, with the limited resources available until mutual aid arrived, we needed to prioritize tasks. Aggressive search and water on the fire were attainable goals with the resources on scene within the first 10 minutes. The nozzle teams were able to take windows on both floors as fire was knocked down, more so the rear windows because that was where the fire load was. Appreciate the watch!

      This is obviously a volunteer department struggling with manpower in the middle of the day. This is not your typical city chief who sits at his office all day in a button up uniform. These are people responding from their jobs or from home at a moments notice. This guy runs a department that obviously knows how to work a fire.
