I have been following you for a while. I was wondering if you have any advice on how to graph standing timber that STICKS OUT above the water? My lake has this all over without any boat lanes. 1000% got it when the timber is submerged. I ask because I noticed in some of your earlier vids you had screen shots of sonar images that were in the standing timber where the timber is above the water. thank you
I was fishing yesterday and learned a lot about how my cadence affected the fish. But mostly how hard or soft to tap the 110+1. I caught 7 fish. Including 1 catfish in 1.5 hours by watching them come up to the bait as I twitched it towards them. Then wait and let them look at it for a few seconds. Then twitch and watch my bait disappear before I even felt my rod load up. It was like I was cheating. Blue bird day no wind. Water temp was 56
Wish the common weekend warrior could afford forward facing sonar. The cost of the technology would be comparable to what I bought my used boat for. Can't wait till it's the norm and made affordable to us common working folk.
Johnny will you make a video that involves a complete uncut fishing trip that utilizes your side imaging and down imaging techniques. I think it’ll be helpful to watch you idil until you find fish. An show us the steps to actually get them to eat
Exactly…that’s why I purchased a 10 year supply of everything last year. With that said I’m still waiting on my 5 new NRX+ rods I ordered on Black Friday 2021….. supposedly arriving in May 2022. We shall see.
Should’ve tried a DT 10 on them. I’ve had some awesome days catching good fish suspended in standing timber bouncing a crankbait off of them at the right depth when they won’t bite anything else. I’d like to see you do a video on that technique
I threw it for about 15 minutes, but they didn't even react to it. I tried a 5/8oz size and a 1oz size to see if a really fast fall would get them to react. I threw the kitchen sink at them haha
You didn't even mention the two Rayburn events won on essentially the same thing at both Pro Circuit and Toyota Series levels.. which just goes to show how many examples of this we are seeing in tournament results.
Funny how before we called them jerkbaits we were putting clip on bb weights ahead of the old floating rebels and using them the same way. New day. New terminology I guess.
We are now only noticing the commitment issue, because of the popularity of livescope. I am sure the the "commitment" issue is not new. In the past, if we saw fish in the trees with 2D and couldn't catch them, we would move on to finding another pattern. Continuing jerking the trees, may very well not be a viable pattern at all. We all may need to re-evaluate the phrase .... don't leave fish to find fish! I am seeing many pros going down swinging!
Thanks for the info. Noticed you have some different looking reel handles and knobs. Do you replace the stock handles and if so what do you use? I have mostly daiwa and shimano reels and have always used the stock handles
They are called Reel Grips. They are basically covers for the knobs on your reel handle. They are $4.99 per pair. Here's a link: www.tacklewarehouse.com/Reel_Grips_Pro_Series/descpage-RGPS.html
To me an especially ideal time to throw jerkbaits especially is March. March is a lot of times windy so an ideal time. It's good to always have at least a couple jerkbaits. Sadly last time I fished I lost a favorite jerkbait. Reason my favorite because the action an the color. I may have to look for good ponds that are more stocked. The river I fished during last summer the whole summer I only caught 3. That's why it's so important to do catch an release specially small fish so they can get bigger possibly breed to have more fish.
I'm going to start trying different brands in the future. It's just hard to buy so many different bait when I already invested in the Megabass jerkbaits haha
@@FishtheMoment yeah and when the jerkbaits are 24+ dollars a piece it's hard to invest so much into multiple brands.. and its not like everytime u go out your only throwing jerkbaits lol.. some ppl don't understand the money it takes to fish and buy all the tackle.. and some think just because your on youtube that every bait u use is free when thats far from the case..but good video Johnny and great info.. I just installed the Garmin 106 on my boat and haven't been able to try it out yet so that info is great to know about being more efficient with side imaging especially because I fish alot of tournaments.. keep up the good work buddy and tight lines 🤙
There's a Shimano brand jerkbait that has a mechanism which causes the jerkbait to flash in a repeating manner when still, it's really cool but they are sold out everywhere
Kind of directing the subject the other way, but I have very similar coverage in the lake i fish in Virginia. However, its a Florida strain large mouth bass dominant body of water. So my question is: it being a Florida strain bass, would they be me prone to Florida type colors and scents mostly fished in Florida, like the Okeechobee and black and blue colors? And maybe shrimp scented?
You should check out live scanner for livescope it has variable speed and will scan for you and also use foot petal to dial in on a certain spot while being independent from the trolling motor
I’m new to this fishing with jerk baits. I thought the jerk baits floated until you start to reel it in. How did you just drop the jerk bait straight down? Did you have a weight on it?
Some jerk baits suspend, some float, some sink- depends on the brand you buy. Also, you can change the hooks to add more weight- go with a larger, thicker wire hook for instance- makes it sink. Or, they make suspend strips you stick on the bait that add weight so you can make a floater suspend- but if you keep adding them, you'll make a suspending bait sink. Or, some guys like to wrap lead wire around the hook shanks to add weight. Water temp also plays a part- some baits only suspend in the right temps- if its warmer they might rise- if it's much colder they might sink. Jerk baiting is a deep rabbit hole man, lots of details and tricks.
No, I was worried about snagging it in the trees. The jerkbait has a bill, which eliminates some snags, but the spybait gets stuck on everything when not in open water.
I remove the sonar settings from the screen in the fish finder setup so I can get a fill screen shot of the fish and cover. If I have the settings on the screen, it makes it really hard to see the small dots (fish) in the screenshots
I have been seeing the same things on the jerkbait for suspending bass in timber. Really hard to get them to commit to strike it! Very frustrating, maybe the jerkbait needs pink pokadots? IDK kudos to the pros!
Do they come up and just point at it- nose up to it, but never strike? I had this same issue and if they're doing so from beneath it- like they're below the bait looking up at it- you need it to sink down to them. Weight the rear hook so that when you pause the bait it will slowly start sinking down and back- or throw a shadow rap which already sinks- when it sinks down to them, they'll hit it and commit. Now if they're coming up like even with it- not below it- and not striking- Idk. I still haven't figured out how to get these guys to hit. I usually try different colors, different retrieves but- lots of times I simply fail to get them to fire.
Good video and info. Could I please show your livescope mount and the transducer wiring setup. I’m getting livescope and I’ve seen multiple ways to route the transducer wire up the shaft with autopilot that has me totally confused.
i used to be salty about living in the north east but not anymore. its like caveman times up here. 95% of ppl don't even know what off shore fishing is lol.
I was thinking the same thing. I’ve actually tried fishing for these fish dozens of times over the years and never had much success. I would sometimes get them to bite an Alabama rig or swimbait if it was windy and cloudy, but most of the time I struck out. It’s fascinating to watch them follow that Jerkbait for 45 seconds and then finally commit, but also frustrating when 9/10 just swims away from it.
It's really hard to pick fish out from standing timber. It took me 3 years and over 50 hours of graphing timber to figure it out. Here's another video with more obvious examples: ua-cam.com/video/0PmnIPD6Oww/v-deo.html
@@FishtheMoment i should have taken pics today. My underwater camera couldn't see anything in the muddy water so I couldn't compare livescope to actual pics
In my experiences, graphing with your electronics is a great tool but it only tells half the story. You need to understand bass patterns and behaviors. Even if you give a novice angler the best electronics with livescope, an old fisherman in a cheap boat will still fish circles around him. Experience matters. If there is standing timber everywhere, you'll run yourself in circles looking for fish. Look for the timber that's unique and different. What makes it stand out? If you find that, you'll find the fish.
I completely agree that experience is more important than having the best electronics. But at the same time, having 1,000s of hours behind a fish finder like I do helps me identify key trees with electronics. I graphed over 2,000-3,000 trees over a 4 hours period and was able to pick out 20-30 that had fish because of my electronics. I didn’t catch that many fish because the conditions weren’t correct for a Jerkbait bite, but I was trying to make a specific video and stuck with it for the content. However, I gave my buddy the waypoints to those tress and he went out the next day when it was windy and cloudy and caught over 20 bass from them on a Jerkbait and had 5 bass for over 17 pounds. My point is that to be a top level angler like the pros, you need to have a lot of experience in both bass behavior and how to use electronics. That’s just the way the sport is going.
@@FishtheMoment Oh I wasn't riffing on your skills, in fact, quite the opposite. But many new anglers fall into the trap of thinking that livescope and other tools act as sort of a 'cheat code' for catching bass. The proper electronics is only part of the picture. You still have to put in time on the water and learn bass behavior.
Great info. Thanks Jonny.
Great information!
This was very interesting. It really confirms that I don't want livescope on my boat. Not saying that as an insult either. Great video 👍
Haha I feel the same way about 2/3 of the time
Truthful and helpful
Look into the lunar phase of that day. New moon - morning bite. Full moon - evening bite. The quarter phases - your guess is as good as mine.
Excellent presentation Johnny.
Just goes to show that fish can be picky even for a professional.

I personally believe electronics shouldn't be used in tournaments. Practice is ok but once it starts used what you learned over practice.

Do you still find 2d sonar effective? I’d think that it is useless now if you have live
About to go out and do just this but with out the sonar. I’ll let you know how i did I’m a few hours.
Awesome! Let me know how it goes.

Wonder if you’d have thrown the trusty FTM football head jig in there if they’d be interested?? Thanks Johnny

What rod from Denali would you suggest for 3/8 oz finesse jigs?
I throw the Kovert LT 7'2" Medium Heavy Worm/Jig Rod
