  • We take you behind the scenes on a closer look inside the recent makeover of my Art Deco apartment. You might remember this rad looking pad that we featured earlier this year and it was also one of the first homes to feature in our Let Us In Home Tour series. I have been lucky to call this place home for the last 10 years, but recently I’ve moved into new and bigger digs which sadly means that it’s time to put this old dame on the market. And I do mean old guys, she was built in 1940. The building itself is Art Deco and was designed by architect Stuart Hall and is now protected by a Heritage overlay. Recently we finished giving the exterior of the building a facelift with a new paint job and brand new Palm Springs inspired garden. So now that the outside looks rad, it’s time to give the inside a modern makeover!
This old gal has great bones and luckily I don’t have to change much structurally. Instead I’m going to be focusing on highlighting the apartment’s best features and enhancing the overall feeling of scale in this small pad.
First, we’re going to lighten up the entire apartment with paint, because there ain’t nothing a fresh coat of paint can’t fix. We’ll be painting all the walls in every room including the kitchen cabinets which need some serious repair. The bathroom is a bit of a disaster I’ll be honest. It’s not very functional, it’s very pokey and so we’ll be stripping that out and replacing the cabinetry, adding more storage, plus a couple of cosmetic fixes to make everything look ten times better…
The windows are easily this apartment’s best asset … it has got the sexiest curved window ever so I need to make sure I highlight. Currently, the window furnishings are either broken, tired or ugly. So they need just need to disappear and be replaced with something far superior. Then I just need to find the perfect furniture and decor to style up the space. I’m wanting to create a modern coastal vibe inside which will really suit the Palm Spring style outside. Hopefully, when I’m finished, this empty and tired old pad will magically transform (after lots of hard work!) into a super chill, yet sophisticated paradise!

I like the apartment make over but disappointed as not Art Deco. Loved the plantation blinds. Beautiful Art Deco apartment from the outside. Beautiful curved window. Sure you’ll sell it in no time. X

We renovated a 1945 home - it had all its art deco features removed, so we spent 15 years renovating and in the end rescuing this stunning suburban home. Runded outside walls, 1760' decor and wallpaper and illegal plumbing and electrical wiring and salt damp to waist height made it a love of tie and money. However, spending time sifting thru salvage yards, a sympathetic extension and kitchen and beautiful original features put back in - has made it an art deco haven. I wish you had kept more art deco theme in the house - it so deserved it!

Very hard to find untouched Art Deco apartments these days. Many themselves were renovated in the 1950s-1980s to add contemporary features & styling like built in kitchen cabinets & countertops, bathtubs, sinks, toilets, and space for a modern refrigerator.

Let's make everything white and call it "interior design"... This is minimalist, and far from art deco

Yeah exactly, "Interior design" aka repainting the place exactly as it was just with a fresh coat of paint and filling it with cheap MCM knock off furnishings. LOL

You obviously worked very hard on this, and I understand that you're selling, so you want everything to be palatable to the average buyer. Gotta be honest though, I reckon the 'paint everything white' trend is well and truly on the way out.

Why is everyone complaining about the fact that the decor is not Art Deco? She did say in the video and the description that she was going for '’a modern coastal vibe inside'. The Art Deco is on the outside. Also, she mentioned that she was thinking of selling the place, so I understand she kept it white and clean and minimal. Overall, well done :)

I came here for Art Deco and was disappointed by the fact that only the building is art deco on the outside. Call it modern or minimalist apartment makeover. The makeover isn't art deco. The building is. The apartment is just inside the building but the apartment isn't really... sigh.. you get it.

@@Huntingforgeorge I agree with nikitesh kadu above. While the outside of the building is beautiful Art Deco design, the inside decoration and style is more of a white minimalist style, I don't really recognise anything I would describe as definite Art Deco style.

My not needed opinion: Everything is cold and bland...
The curtains would have been better higher. It would enlarge the vision and more light would come into the living room.
Why a grey couch ? If you want to do an art deco style, velvet and touch of colors are needed.
The choice of paintings / art is kind of basic, every student that move to their first apartment have that kind of painting, arts... lack of sophistication and maturity
The master bedroom is boring... the color scheme, the accents...
    The kitchen is really simple

Do you even know what ART DECO means?

    • @Huntingforgeorge
      @Huntingforgeorge  4 роки тому +5

      We do indeed.
This particular building is a slice of Australian Architectural History. The land where the building now stands on Lalbert Crescent was once part of the extensive grounds of a mansion of the same name, that was built in 1880 for C.J. Ham. Following his death in 1909 the estate was progressively subdivided into suburban allotments. As the demand for housing became greater, the development of flats increased which was a huge shift from the large stately homes that predominantly occupied the areas of Armadale and Toorak at that time. The local residents were fearful that these residential flats were going to ruin the character of their tree-lined suburbs. So to counter the criticism, leading architects were employed to design these apartment blocks so as not to upset the local residents or ruin the charm of the area. Stuart Hall was employed to design this building which was completed in 1940. Stuart Hall designed quite a number of flat developments in St Kilda, South Yarra and Armadale during the inter-war period and is known for his designs are in the Moderne style, with either Jazz or Art Deco detailing.
