This is a great video. I had no idea that even though I was harvesting from magazines, that I was overlooking so much. This morning I picked up a free nutrition magazine at my grocery store, and was amazed at how many blocks of color and designs from nature that I had previously been overlooking. I found far more words and found the small text I had been looking for elsewhere unsuccessfully. Thank you so much for this great skill builder!
Really enjoyed this video. I learnt so much about harvesting from magazines. As a newbie to this great sport.. I am so thirsty for inspiration, knowledge and great tips that this was a delight. So glad to have discovered your great channel. Thank you for sharing you thoughts, ideas and knowledge.
The best demonstration of processing magazines! Your expressed inner dialog is perfect. Each image needs to be considered based on multiple factors. Just because I like something does not mean I should harvest it! Knowing your stash is also important, too much of any one color or subject just creates indecision while I'm working and ultimately figurative compost. Trust me, I know all about too many magazine images. Thank you for such a great video!
Thank you.......I think the true secret is that after you’ve been through a magazine throw it in the recycle bin/trash, hoarding it just in case you missed something is a disastrous thing to do.
We must be kindred spirits because this is how I organize my images. I collect old floral books, design books, etc and spend my time cutting them while watching tv. Good job. Cutting out numbers is a great idea. Louise
Oh my, this was a Wonderful video ... I have learned so much about what to save and what to look for in words, pictures and textures ... Thank you so much for sharing your Gift of Art with us ❤️
I ALWAYS find many more when I go back thru so I was really cringing when I saw you crinkle up some of those pages 😂 glad to hear you say at the end that you do revisit those pages!
Love how your brain works Ceri! I’ve been harvesting from catalogues, magazines, books, etc. all my life. I remember sitting on my gramma’s couch for hours cutting out piece after piece and putting everything in a journal to collage later. Sooo much fun!
@@CeriGriffiths , do you keep the words/letters/numbers too? I do. I don’t know what it is, but I have to have a number somewhere on my page. Different languages on a page sitting altogether is also so fun to see peeking out from behind an image. I find Hebrew fascinating! Do you want to know something funny? I still have 3 of my collage books tucked away ready for collaging. Life got busy with marriage, kids, family, and my books got put away. Time to take a look at my child’s mind to see where she was at the time she harvested all her goodies that meant so much to her. Through every move, every change in life, I cherished these harvested little pieces so much that they always got neatly packed away with a lot of love so one day I could open them up and put them together. Time to take them out. What a trip I have ahead of me!
Hi Ceri, I do exactly as you. cut out all the interesting pictures in magazines and especially the wording. I am slowly but surely going to make a few items that you have shown. But I am a knitter of toys for my market, do want to start adding cards in envelopes. Idea and inspiration came from your video. Otherwise mostly my magazine pictures and wording I use to brighten up my hand written knitting books.
This is SO helpful! I was especially excited to see you select the images I would have saved. I have not done a magazine collage (yet), but you have inspired me. Now, please show a finished collage so we can see how you used your harvest. Thank you so much. ❤️ Shirley
Shirley thank you for your comments, the pieces I harvested are scattered through many of my projects from the Margarete Miller weekly challenge to the glue book pieces I create every month so unfortunately I can’t show you one specific piece.
You made this video a year ago.. but thank you…I learned a lot.. and know I’m not crazy for picking the things out of magazines that I would normally pick.. I’m a rookie at this so thank you.. you answered a lot of questions for me and filled in a lot of gaps.. thanks again.. love your channel.. from USA.. Maryland..
Thank you so much for sharing your thought process as you harvested. Magazines better look out around me now that I know how to look at them differently!
Ceri I asked my podiatrist If I may have some if he's magazine in the waiting room. They are beautiful ! So now when I have an appointment he reminds me to take some .So my hunt just ask Dr officeses. And we have a neighborhood group that I ask for magazines off at my door.Thankyou♥️
Fascinating! I loved your magazine harvesting. Very nice. Thrift shops practically give magazines away. I look for the rare periodical with heavier paper. Many thanks! ✂📄💗
I am glad I watched this. I have magazines saved but am ignoring them. I was overwhelmed by them. Now I have an idea of how to approach them. Thank you
2:13 In a pinch, you can use a pair of tweezers to easily remove the staples, too. Thanks for sharing your process, Ceri. I am learning SO much from you. I've picked up lots of books & magazines from thrift stores & haven't touched them yet. Showing me how fun & straightforward it can be to harvest the images encourages me to finally get started. Thank you!
Loved this. I normally by a magazine each month that is about the state I live in. I just went through the latest issue harvesting words. Now I’m going to go back through it with a new perspective!
That was great! I have a window I cut into cardboard that I go though magazines with that help me find interesting things that are good for making faux cigarette card size things.
This has helped me so so much. I’m really new at collage. I have a pile of magazines and had no idea what to keep. Hearing your reasons as I watched you cutting things out was so wonderful. I can take on those catalogs now. Thank you, treen 💚💚💚
Fabulous......the other trick is once you’ve gone through the magazine and taken pieces out you have to throw away the magazine, in the recycling preferably, because it’s too easy to keep the magazine just in case you missed something.
Yippee! Finally I found something that I already do! Although you have provided ways to fine tune the process. I can hardly wait for an opportunity to collage. Thanks so much! Erica❤
I look at things in a magazine very similar to what you do. My storage has been a little different but I may have to reconsider I like the way you do it and maybe that would work better for me. I do have a box where I put fussy cut things that need to be cut out and I do that while I'm watching TV at night. I have been reluctant to get rid of a magazine once I take some things out of it and I realize that's just hoarding and people are giving me so many magazines I can't possibly keep them all. I really appreciate seeing your process taking one page at a time and then throwing the rest away. You have really saved me thank you thank you
I really needed to see this video Ceri, my friend gave me tons of beautiful magazines, and I’m just starting my collage adventure…. This really helped me. 🦋. One of the pages you saved, was what you used on your blue collage. Awesome
Found that video so interesting and was not bored at all. Your voice is also very soothing and as far as I am concerned, this video could have lasted longer. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and makes me look at magazines in a whole different way.
I’m tickled that on page after page, I’m picking out the exact bits that seconds later you see and cut out. It’s like we are on the same aesthetic wavelength. 😊 But you are reinforcing my inner packrat that I’ve been trying to rein in! Oh, well… 😊
@@CeriGriffiths As you should! Maybe if I watch more of your lovely videos I’ll get better at using and /or purging my stash to better contain it, because you seem to be a master at that! Thanks.
i got half way thru then i had to pause and go tear some magazines apart :D thanks for sharing this, really boosted my collection of images and stuff for my journals
Just loving your videos. They're full of great ideas, tutorials and inspiration. I just wish I had Hermione Granger's little baubles that turns back time so I can watch all of your videos. ~Velvet
so, i took your challenge. Except i only had digital magazines. Never fear the grocery is close. Sticker shock hit me like a brick building $10-15 per mag. So I grabbed all the freebies at the front of the store. I harvested artwork, texture, shelves, birds, etc for free. Oh, and some words
I must admit it depends on how I'm going to use the glossy papers, if they're in a collage for myself then I use glue stick to adhere them to a page, if its for an art pieces I'd probably use a collage medium or matt medium the only problem is the wetter the glue the more likely it is for the glossy page to ripple, its a tricky one.
Leena I use them in a lot of my collage and in my planner, I have many videos where I use magazines images but this play list is possibly where you’ll find most of them. ua-cam.com/play/PL9jo60Ix0S8JJR_oW8AWCcn6gkSD_Rpmp.html
I use what I harvest mainly for my planner also for my collage glue book but if there was an appropriate piece for my junk journals then yes I’d use it.
Stacy there are tear rulers but I’ve used just ordinary rulers for years as well, the tear rulers will give you more of a ragged edge whereas a normal ruler will give you a smoother torn edge, if you have a metal edged ruler they are more durable for tearing.
The tearing of paper is FINE! No problem with the sound of it at all!!!!!
Thank you

This is what I’m doing tomorrow. Once a month our local library gets rid of magazines. They’ve been happy to save them for me.
Fabulous.
I would have harvested so much more from those magazines but I wouldn't know what to do with them. ;)
That’s the problem Jean, I could harvest so much more but then it just goes in a box and is forgotten about.
