I don’t think the emperor was stupid enough to believe 4th prince and punish 5th prince for being sad over his Aunt’s tragedy. He knew 4th prince framed 5th prince, and like Li Yu said, the emperor didn’t punish 4th prince but will shun him more. The emperor recognized 5th prince’s sincerity and innocence, but he also knows that such kindness will be taken advantage of by other ppl. So, he said it’s wrong of 5th prince to share his thoughts n feelings. The emperor was historically known to be a stern and tough parent to the princes, so the way he showed his love to his sons had to be very subtle to avoid causing jealousy among them. So punishing 5th prince and letting 4th prince think the emperor dislikes 5th prince is a way to protect and show his love for 5th prince. I just thought the TV series emperor deserves some justification
Yongqi would have been a great emperor. He loved his mothers, father, grandmother, country, etc etc. But he loved a witch too much and that was his downfall.
