EUROPEAN ELECTIONS 2024: Divided Germany! Why the East is voting for the AfD

In the European elections, the AfD performed particularly well in eastern Germany and virtually dominated the ballot papers. It was the strongest force in all eastern states, while the Union triumphed in the west. This result underlines the growing social divide between eastern and western Germany. Politicians from both parts of the country are now calling for dialogue to be sought in order to overcome this divide.
Germany has been reunited for over 30 years, but the European elections show once again that an invisible border runs through the country. The CDU/CSU is winning in the west, while the AfD dominates in the east. Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow warns against prematurely judging East Germans and stresses that it is frivolous to describe East Germans as "stupid". Even if 30% of voters in the east voted for the AfD, this is only 30% of those who took part in the election. The remaining 70% who did not vote for the AfD must not be overlooked.
In the West, the AfD's success in East Germany is causing people to shake their heads. Even decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many West Germans still feel alienated from their fellow citizens in the East. In the East, many people feel disadvantaged and not sufficiently recognized. These feelings of being left behind and of the East's needs not being taken into account enough during the fall of the Berlin Wall are contributing to the AfD's popularity here.
North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst is calling for more exchange between citizens in the west and east. He points out that some West Germans know Mallorca better than the new federal states. It is time to visit each other and get to know each other better in order to really fulfil the social task of unification. 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is important to accept these challenges and promote a new friendship between East and West.
