What I really love about "It Happened One Night" is how simple the story is and yet how brilliant the makers turned it into
"Please hold this train, I have to go accept an award" is queen behavior tbh
Did we just get two BKR videos in the span of a week? We are blessed.
I couldn’t be happier!!! ❤
so true omg i just love her videos ♡
❤❤❤❤❤
You do not lie. I may need to cave and get that Nebula sub.
Fun fashion history fact: When Clark Gable took his shirt off to reveal that he wore no undershirt, undershirt sales dropped across the country.
“I have a bad boy and I’d like to spank him” is honestly the best thing I’ve learned abt Clark Gable tbh
in "The Name above the Title," Frank Capra wrote Gable showed up at his office for the first time, drunk, saying something like, "So this is Siberia." Lots more in the book, a good read.

👌
Although actually Meyer wanted to punish him because he had had tooth issues that actually nearly nearly him, and delayed production of some films. So it’s just old Hollywood being terrible is something that was seen as his fault.
Screwball comedies are so underrated. The Awful Truth is one of the best films ever made.
I'm in agreement with you regarding The Awful Truth. Irene Dunne and Cary Grant were both excellent in it.
Absolutely true. It should be better remembered--the epitome for me is the scene at the snooty gathering, when Irene Dunne tries to pass herself off as Grant’s tipsy sister. It’s hysterical and absolutely brilliant.
So excited for the topic of this video! I watched It happened One Night for the first time about a year ago and couldn't believe the level of charisma, chemistry and that one of the most successful examples of the enemy to lovers romcom trope (in my opinion) came out almost 90 years ago?
This was the blueprint ✨
I mean, Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing feels literally like the original blueprint™ of the enemies to lovers trope. and it came out 400 years ago. If you're not familiar with it, I can't recommend it enough.
It’s usually the case that the older works do better and then later iterations misinterpret what made them work. For instance, I think some of the best Manic Pixie Dream Girls were in Bringing Up Baby and My Man Godfrey because the women are still characters, whereas the ones that helped coin the term from movies that came out in the last 30 years drop everything for the male lead, even on their death bed, and the a story goes with it because she brightens up the man’s life
Ellie was sheltered more than anything. She had wit ,moxie, brains and heart .They even let her dad become someone to root for.
Frank Capra is one of my absolute favorite directors. I feel like he was an early, low-budget Steven Spielberg. He wanted to make the kind of movies that made *him* happy. There's so much heart in his films.
This was one of the first Classic Hollywood movies I watched, and it still has a place in my heart. It's a very fun and cute movie.
I feel the same way about Bringing Up Baby. That movie will always have a place in my heart
@@rebeccassweetmusic4632 Two romantic comedy classics.
I am a Bette Davis fan, but I feel Claudette did deserve her Best Actress win for her performance in It Happened One Night. Thank you for putting her performance and her win in context of time period as you do visually well.
Also, I hope you will still drop videos on UA-cam. Nebula sounds great, but I worry about affordability a lot, even though I do support content creators having a say in their creations more.
We devalue comedies. Colbert deserved her Oscar. Doing the most acting isn't the same as doing the best acting.
@TheSongwritingCat I agree that we devalue comedies and that Colbert deserved her Oscar. I disagree that Bette Davis did the most acting versus Claudette Colbert, who did the best acting. If they were both able to achieve character, then they both acted.
We think a key monologue or dialogue or great makeup and accents define a great performance. But, an accent is an actor's choice and actors can achieve character without an accent. Key monologues and dialogues are defined by screenwriters. Make up is make up. A director influences all these choices. An actor brings a performance based on tools they have to create a character.
Davis and Colbert acted their parts as best as they could. The Academy's preference was their preference.
this is one of my favorite movies so so glad you covered it! (though agree on the bette davis snub!)
Sweetie, you and me both. This was one of Grant's better movies, but Colbert WAS ALWAYS good. She was so much fun!

Road romance movies are admittedly, some of my favorites for the simple fact we get to know these two characters in all their stages and how they function together before we even get a romance. Such a backstage lends itself to sole focus on this couple and by the end, their relationship feels more than credible. Love this movie!
Hmm. Good points. Do you have any suggestions for other good road romances?
”Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” is one of my favourite movies ever. The protagonists meet while travelling trough Europe.
Haha, my example is also Indian! Jab We Met is one of me & my sister's favourite rom coms.
I can't even explain how I excited I am, one of my favorite films!
Woah new BKR so soon? What a treat!
I had this like 80% done and then Michelle Yeoh won so....Ms. Colbert took a back seat for a bit haha
@@bkrewind and now your fans get seconds. What a great week!
If you don't have it on your list, I'd love to see a video on the !994 Oscars, particularly Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin wins and the Schindler's List sweep.
What did SL sweep? It didn't win any acting awards.
@@Tolstoy111maybe they’re talking about how it won BP and Director. Just a guess
I would find it interesting to see a vid on Jane Campion herself and her work; not an actress but she’s one of the unique female visionaries working today. But yes to cover Holly and Anna win their trophies would be a good topic
I’m ashamed to say I haven’t seen this movie yet, but will watch it tonight. Claudette is one of the many actresses who are underrated today. Modern actors have noting on the people who had four weeks or six weeks and couldn’t rely on CGI to do a lot of it for them. It’s starting to see that there are scenes in some Marvel movies that look like the actors, yet are 100% CGI, not even mocap suits. Modern acting is starting to become acting in voice only, which is important, but it’s a lot faster to record a film’s worth of lines in a studio in your pajamas or sweatpants. Back in Claudette’s day, it was blood, sweat, tears, and pure talent all around.
She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in this video, only maybe with a happy ending, not the bittersweet ending of Roman Holiday. We’ll see when I watch it.
If you get around to it, I’d love a video about the friendship between Clark Gable and Myrna Loy because it’s one of the sweetest things ever. You can just tell the adoration they had for each other. Not romantic, but that soul-bond level of just pure friendship and love. And a video about the aviation films at the time (they were in some, yes, but there were more). I fly planes and the history of aviation in that era is fascinating, and a lot of it was on film. Myrna could have died in a plane fire had Clark not run in. Granted, the scene called for a rescue, but the fire actually got out of control and her rescue was literal. She reportedly didn’t know until later that the fire was actually out of control and that he wasn’t exactly acting.
My favorite parts of ‘It Happened One Night’ are when the driver keeps saying “Oh Yeah?”, when Peter teaches Ellie how to dunk a donut, and the singalong on the bus.
omg I watched 'It Happened One Night' fairly recently and wondered about a romcom taking the Oscars by storm like that. This provided such brilliant context for a lot of the questions I just told myself to 'google later tbh.' Also, lmaooo at the angry and real stan quotes from way back when as tweets plsss, not them fitting in with film twitter hee. Another really lovely and eye-opening video. Thanks for making this!
hello 👋 how are you doing today I hope all is well with you dear i have been seeing your post but I have tried sending you a friend request but not going if you don't mind can you please try sending it from your side 🙏but if you see my message embarrassing then please pardon my manners have a blessed day 😘
Who else became inspired by these wonderful videos?
They always make me want to binge all the classic movies I own
FR i wanted to start my own video essay channel lol and these videos are directly responsible for me watching every screwball comedy I could get my hands on during the pandemic
They definitely made me make my channel, even if my vibe and style is entirely the opposite.
Inspired to time travel to the 30's and pursue an acting career, with the hindsight of what's gonna sell and what's gonna flop? Yeah, me too
I do..... I DOOOOO
I've been waiting on a Claudette Colbert Oscar story, and coupling it with screwball comedy (one of my favorite genres) is golden.
You introducing Norma Shearer made me laugh. Such an iconic 1930s actress for sure
Yay! I have been waiting for a Claudette Corbert video!
It happened one night is a great movie too
"It Happened One Night" is one of my absolute favourite films :) Thank you for the wonderful video about it!
8:31 The advice to Roskin & Capra is BRILLIANT! It nailed each minus and spun a plus out of it.🙏💥 Kudos 👏 👏 👏
Claudette Colbert's films were appealing and so was she! Gorgeous and very talented actress. Love her and her films.
oh my god now I'm imagining Myrna Loy in It Happened One Night and that's just so much fun
Colbert thoroughly deserved her Oscar for IHON, but Davis should’ve at least been nominated for Of Human Bondage and Loy also should’ve been nominated for The Thin Man.
I'm so glad you covered this film! It's what really kickstarted my love of classic film as an adult.
We’re so lucky! Keep up the great work, BKR ❤
I love this movie, and Colbert's performance. I'm always extra fascinated by those "accidental" hits where the filmmakers and actors didn't even feel like they were making a great film, and it all felt like a rush job. I also love that you touched on the audience identification aspect this movie has and how it connects with the audiences particularly in the Depression. That's always been one of my favorite parts of this movie - seeing America through the lens of someone who never gets to see what it's really like. The journey is the most interesting part, not the love story (as charming as it is). Phenomenal work as always!
Even if Loy and Davis were nominated, Claudette Colbert still gave the best performance of the year. 100% deserved.
Good for you on joining the Nebula creators! Your content will fit right in. I’ve been a fan since you’re casting Scarlett O’Hara video, and it’s been wonderful to watch you grow in polish and confidence.
So relieved. It is hazardous to make these videos on YT, with bad faith copyright strikes. Nebula will make sure we can always access these wonderful videos.
I just watched the film RESPECT, with Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin.... somehow this film totally went under my radar.... I just happened to bump into it on Prime Video.... On IMDB it also just has a score of 6.6 .... unbelievable.... this film is made to perfection..... and an impressive role by Jennifer Hudson.... She wasn't even nominated for an Oscar.... the whole film wasn't nominated for whatever Academy Awards category.... how is this possible? Would be great if you would research this and make a video about it.....
One of my absolute favourite movies. #1 Claudette Colbert is fabulous. Gable is handsome. The script is fast-paced. Frank Capra deftly directs a timeless film. 🫶🏾
2 BKR videos in a week? You spoil us🙌
How am I so lucky? 3 favorite creators just dropped a video at the same time 😭💗😍
While I giggle right through It Happened ONe Night, the film On Human Bondage is just amazing… that one scene (I wipe my mouth) gives me chills, and also I’ve had a tragic crush on Leslie Howard for my entire life.
Two BKR videos in less than a week? This is such a serotonin boost, thank you for this!
Two Be Kind Rewind videos, and an indictment in one week!
Best week ever!
I love It Happened One Night, one of Frank Capra's masterpieces alongside Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, You Can't Take It With You, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Meet John Doe, It's A Wonderful Life, and State Of The Union. Frank Capra definitely deserved those 3 Best Director Oscars. So many classics. And the legendary actors and actresses he worked with like Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert, Gary Cooper, Jean Arthur, Jimmy Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Just amazing.
Thanks for covering this great classic, Be Kind Rewind!
I come from this as a film fan and animation researcher. So when I say that this is an extremely important film for cartoons, I mean it. Clark casually chewing a Carrot ended up getting parodied in A Wild Hare, the first fully formed appearance of Bugs Bunny.
As much as I love Bette, I would’ve voted for Claudette for the Best Actress Oscar because of how much I love It Happened One Night. I think Bette should’ve won for All About Eve to be honest. That was the most egregious robbery of her career.
I completely agree with you. I absolutely love "It Happened One Night." It's my favorite Gable performance. Bette Davis over-acted horribly in "Of Human Bondage." Did you know that Colbert was originally cast in "All about Eve," with Anne Baxter also cast as Eve because she resembled Claudette? Then, Colbert had to drop out due to a back injury, and Bette Davis stepped in. Bette Davis was robbed of an Oscar for "All About Eve." Almost no one remembers the winning performance in "Born Yesterday."
@@lemorab1much as I love Bette, gotta agree with you here. It was ironic how she ended up getting it as a consolation the next year for Dangerous, then lost when she really deserved it in 1950.
Another great presentation and narration by BKR.
FINALLY TORCH SINGER GETS THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES!! ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME MADE ME CRYYYY
I really loved this video. It Happened One Night was one of my favourite movies when I was a kid and I probably have watched it at least a dozen times as an adult and I find like The Lady Eve and His Girl Friday, it holds up on multiple views. Gable and Colbert had terrific chemistry and hearing how the original story was adapted to make the characters more sympathetic was interesting. Those changes really were so effective. I think Myrna Loy would have been terrific in this as she had such a gift for smart dialogue but Colbert really gift here is that you can buy her as smart but totally out of her depths at any given moment and I think Loy has competence that might not have translated.
I think the Oscars sweep for "It Happened One Night" was due to its enormous popularity with the public and its relevance to Depression era Americans--it contains some really beautiful depictions of ordinary people thrown together (like the singalong on the bus, or the ladies in the shower line at the motel) and it, like many Capra films, upheld simple American values and ideas. The chemistry between Colbert and Gable is truly magical. The other contenders for Best Actress were formidable--but Grace Moore was an opera singer, and "Of Human Bondage" and "Barretts of Wimpole Street" are films based on British source material and perhaps not as relatable for audiences of the time.
I'd love to see you do a video of Sophia Loren's Oscar win and Susan Hayward's Oscar win, if you don’t already have plans for them! Love your videos BKR!
I saw this movie the minute I finished your video. I love Clark Gable, but did not know much about Claudette Colbert. It was a great movie and I've been obsessing over it ever since. Thank you for this video! Old Hollywood movies are my favorite.
hello 👋 how are you doing today I hope all is well with you dear i have been seeing your post but I have tried sending you a friend request but not going if you don't mind can you please try sending it from your side 🙏but if you see my message embarrassing then please pardon my manners have a blessed day 😘
The comments about Bette Davis versus Claudette Colbert (presented in Twitterized format) feels almost parallel to what we saw this year with Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh, except Blanchett was actually nominated.
Keep up the amazing work, BKRW! This one finally put you over the top and I signed up for Nebula.
I'm so excited for this one!!!!! it happened one night it probably my favorite movie of all time. I'm so obsessed with claudette's performance i went on a deep dive of her other films afterwards because i had to see more, and the hailing a car scene is, i think, the funniest scene put to film ever. I'm so happy you're talking about it
I have to admit I just watched The Lady Eve a few weeks ago, and one of the first things I thought about after it ended was how much I'd love to hear BKR's thoughts on it, and on Barbara Stanwyck in general. From what I know she was a really interesting woman, and a very worthy subject for a deep dive. Jean Harrington is such a fabulous character and Stany is at peak Stanyness here. And it's always so funny to me how Henry Fonda basically cloned himself to make Jane. Watching scenes with both of them was both a treat and a trip.
Anyways, great video as ever.
“Quit bawling!” 🤣🎬
You're spoiling us ahaha - can you do maureen o'hara sometime?
You have no idea how my mood changes when I see you have posted a new video. It is a boost of good energy
I really love Claudette Colbert movies so this was a great video.
Fantastic as usual. My issue with Nebula is that I already pay for a UA-cam premium subscription for my family, as honestly UA-cam is my main source for content these days and has basically unlimited topics and content, and the fee I pay gives me ad-free access.
But I always wonder if any of it helps creators at all, or just UA-cam’s bottom line.
So I also support some channels via channel memberships or Patreon, and adding Nebula to all of that is an expense I don’t want to add because not all UA-cam creators are there.
Having said that, this channel is magnificent and an example of the high quality possible in this medium.
Good luck and I envy those with access to any extra content in Nebula from your channel, I think they will find it absolutely worth the small yearly fee.
Loved this video, Claudette Colbert is a figure I always wanted to learn about and never did. It’s so strange to think of the Oscars happening in the 1930s Depression era.
This was really the first true 'blockbuster' because people went back to see it two three times. Producers had never imagined a film that could sell three tickets to one customer.
I will always love her performance in The Two Mrs. Grenvilles where she starred with my fellow birthday compadre, Ann Margaret. April 28th! Both gave excellent performances.
Very true! I finally found the ‘Grenvilles’ dvd on Amazon.
Talented Ann-Margret really held her own alongside Colbert.
23:48 Imagine going to the Oscars in your Airport look.
I used to be on the Davis train for this year, but now feel this was Colbert’s hands down. She wasn’t the greatest or most dynamic of actresses (unlike Davis), but her laid back approach, often lackluster in dramas, provided terrific friction in her comedic roles. One never catches her trying to be funny, only playing the truth of the situation, which made her a perfect screwball star. There is a lot of subtlety and nuance to her work in IHON, which isn’t the case with Davis in Of Human Bondage. Her Mildred is a thrilling original, sure, but it’s also a caricature with Davis overreaching nearly as often as she succeeds. Dangerous may have been a repeat of OHB and the Oscar a makeup, but she’s better and more deserving there. I’d rather see someone rewarded for quality if unoriginal work than for taking a chance and not really hitting the mark.
Colbert thoroughly deserved her Oscar for IHON, but Bette Davis should've been at least nominated for Of Human Bondage, also Myrna Loy should've been nominated for The Thin Man.
21:38 BKR really knows the Twittersphere like very few do. I love the recreations because it’s truly hilarious.
Thank you for covering this movie! I've loved this movie and have had it on DVD since the mid-late 2000s when I discovered it as a teen. They were both great in it and had great chemistry on screen if not off screen.
Love your videos! In case it is not already on your list, I would love to see a video about Merle Oberon. She was mentioned a couple of times in your video about Michelle Yoeh's win this year, but up until that point I had never heard of her. Also, Rosalind Russell!
Thrilled about this one (hopefully we will get His Girl Friday).
And miss some of the older videos - especially Mommie Dearest.
In our own time, screwball comedies can seem stale and cliched. But not this one. It's still fresh even though it's the progenitor of the genre. It's just a wonderful film with never a dull moment.
I second the Loy casting in IHON
Yes. New video 😀😀😀 One of the best YT Channels in the world. Quality content about films.
The imaginary 1934 Twitter is truly clever and a hoot....
I adore this channel and the narrator's voice!
This movie has been sitting on my watchlist forever. This is the universe telling me to get to it 😂 lovely video!
I watched it last week, it’s a fun watch!
Since you mentioned Bette Davis, I hope for a video about All About Eve.
This film will never seem old.
I just love the idea of Clark Gable annoying the studio heads, like some spoiled child, and getting sent off to shoot a movie, for a smaller studio, as punishment
TWO videos this month?? We have been blessed!
Recently watched It Happened One Night and thought it was fine, but was a little underwhelmed just given its reputation. This video really helps put the film in context, allowing a better appreciation for its quality.
frank capra is THE most underrated and underappreciated filmmaker today. and, oddly enough, this used to be my least liked capra film. enjoyable but without the PUNCH of his more politically charged, social commentary films. but, now, i absolurely LOVE this wonderful, quaint and truly dynamic film. its funny and poignant.
there is no wasted scene or misused shot in "it happened one night." its just a joy to watch from beginning to end like almost all of capra's films. this and "gone with the wind" are the only two gable films i think are any good. ("run silent, run deep," 1958, is pretty good but it kinda drags.)
This video felt so timely to me, echoes of our recent Oscar season where the little movie that could--with a low budget, filmed in a hurry, led by a couple bankable stars (but neither one near the level of Clark Gable back in the day)--won everything. That was a turning point for movies, and I hope this is too.

Also, Silence of rhe Lambs for the 5 award sweep...
Great as usual, Thanx!!!
I want to see a video about Kate Winslet's Oscar for The Reader and how she defeat Meryl Streep for Doubt and herself for Revolutionary Road (I know she wasn't nominated for this last film)
That would be an interesting vid
My favourite kind of actress in the Awards Show Circuit are the ones who think they know someone else has it in the bag.
TWO IN A WEEK? we are blessed
I love Colbert in comedies: It Happened, Midnight and Palm Beach Story
i will always love 'it happened one night' for a multitude of reasons, especially on being the blueprint for almost every romcom that has ever been made since.
I've been waiting for someone to do something on this! It had referenced so much and feels so important in hollywood history
Lucky us to get two videos in such quick succession.
I loved claudette colbert in the palm beach story she was hilarious
I remember in 2016 TCM wanted to show 30s movies for a month and I think It Happened One Night was on their list, I saw the movie 2 years ago in HBO Max and I have seen it like 2 or 3 times and I must say that I liked it and I hope they upload it again, I consider it one of those fresh romantic comedies that I can watch due to its plot, directing and the energy of its leading couple, etc... It contains all the elements of a traditional romantic comedy and perhaps for this reason it is still enjoyable today, I also saw the film with a spanish dubbing made in Puerto Rico in the 60s (they had studios dubbing classic movies including Citizen Kane and Casablanca), it was perfect and even funnier I guess, the actor voicing Clark Gable really matched his voice, it seemed like the actors spoke in Spanish.
I was mostly hoping you'd mention the fact that the hitchhiking scene, when Clark Gable talks while eating a carrot, that is one of the traits that the animator Friz Freleng used for Bugs Bunny since this was one of his favorite movies, and that in the first scene of Gable he talks on the phone and invents a character called "Bugs Dooley".
Another fun fact: this was one of Hitler and Stalin's favorite movies, Hitler particularly loved Gable especially since he had german blood.
What a great topic!! I just recently finished a thesis paper on screwball comedies and their societal impact, so I can't wait to watch this :)
Never mind the impact. They are just pure pleasure. My favorite is Ball of Fire by Howard Hawks!
I would personally love if you did a video on Kay Francis. I can't believe she was never nominated.
The Twitter/acting magazine part😂😂😂 the more things change, the more they stay the same
It’s like this channel reads my mind lol I’ve been binging old school screwballs lately and then this?! Love it. Claudette is a Goddess, completely obsessed lol
i want a BKR video for every single major star and movie of old hollywood
Also, I feel because you content is so accurate will you please explain why Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Supporting Actress this year at the Oscars iyo 🙏🏾 I’ve learned so much from watching your channel like how The SAG came to be , so I feel you the perfect person to explain why Jamie won over the more popular nominee Angela Bassett !!! I love History and being a visual learner who loves to read appreciate how your content causes me to use critical thinking which I’m truly grateful 😇 !!!
That would be awesome
Maybe she’ll do that eventually. Course Angela could get her own video considering her nomination for “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” & of course her recent loss for BP: Wakanda Forever

After James Hong’s iconic SAG Awards Speech, Clark Gable reminds me of James Hong and Vice-Versa.
Near the top of my list of All Time Favorite Movie's.
I just love Capra Movies and It Happened One Night is one of favorite movies. It's just an influential movie. The chemistry between the leads is amazing.
This is fabulous, thank you! One of my all time favourite films, it's just glorious.
Love the film and your essay on it! I also really enjoyed The Bride Came C.O.D, with Bette and Cagney which has some similar elements.
In a perfect world, there would be no awards. Look at 1934, here you have three of the greatest performances, ever committed to film by three of the most talented women to grace the screen. Honestly, how can you choose between the three of them who is the best? All three of those movies are fantastic and I love them all. I watch The Thin every year at Christmas, It Happened One Night once a year too, and although I’ve only seen Of Human Bondage once it left an impression.
Always enjoy your videos .
That was so engrossing. Well done. I think it's hard to properly grasp how innovative and refreshing It Happened One Night must have been as so many of the tropes and plot devices have become so standard.
