  • SCUBA diving is easily one of the most amazing experiences that life can offer. Here, Cathy Church inspires non water people to explore their own limits and discover a whole new world underwater.
A former school teacher with a Master's in Marine Biology, Cathy Church decided to pursue underwater photography full time. She has since been inducted into most halls of fame, written many magazine articles and offered seminars across the US as well as in the UK and France.
She has taught thousands of divers how to better enjoy underwater photography, written several books, sold thousands of prints, and yet feels as though every day she is just getting started.
Cathy carries her camera out to a reef and shoots as though it were all new. Each student is a new challenge, and every photo she takes is a new joy. Every time she meets someone who is not diving with their family because they are “not a water person” Cathy feels so sorry for their not being able to experience being underwater that she immediately start asking questions and start them on their new journey.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Learning SCUBA diving helped me overcome many fears. I would always say that I am still afraid of water (they are different every the time, even in same places), but I have a way of understanding my fear, thus I am able to conquer it. It's a big plus that I see amazing things underwater, too!

I used to have really bad social anxiety (I still have mild-to-moderate cases of various forms of anxiety). Although unrelated to being social (at least, sort of), Scuba Diving is one of the things that helped me overcome all of this because I had to face some very intense fears, and how I felt once I overcame those fears is indescribable

This is a fantastic video. Almost anyone can learn to scuba dive! As scuba instructors we deal with student anxiety on a regular basis. Cathy Church got it right: baby steps, trust and repetition are the keys to conquering any fear! There are two ways to get started in scuba diving - try a Discover Scuba Diving experience or diving in with an Open Water Diver certification course.

    Many thanks Cathy
Your video was very helpful in preparing me for my first dive in lake in England where there was nothing to see and visibility of 1meter
Only support was, I could see my instructor

I used to love scuba diving. One of my dive buddys had a heart attack and stopped diving. The other stopped diving after he got married. I can't find anyone that is willing to dive with an old fart like me. I gave it up and kept snorkeling. I have a hard time finding anyone to go snorkeling with. I could keep snorkeling if I wanted to snorkel by myself. I get alot of flack from t he family when I do. I'm 66 years old and don't live near the ocean. I guess thats it.

I did really good my first two confined water dives. The third one I was overcome by anxiety. Had to pull weights out of bcd and could not get them back in. I got frustrated and breathing sped up. Anyways I'm going to try the open water but any anxiety and I'm done with scuba for good

Slow down, back up and repeat your skills in a pool. Close your eyes and repeat the skills, Give yourself a chance to develop confidence in yourself. You are being rushed. Go back to the pool and repeat the problem of putting the weights in the pockets. IT IS NOT EASY and require practice. Don't put yourself in any situation where you feel anxiety. As soon as you feel anxiety approaching, back up a bit, even if it means returning to the pool to practice some more. Stay in open, warm, clear water like the Caribbean, or whatever environment you like a lot. Write to me for my 5-page handout.

Yeah, no you should not be "petting" or touching any sea life.

Of course, and Cathy never said that you should. She's strongly against touching of marine life.
