in 1986 I rented a huge studio apartment in Pacific Beach just a couple blocks from the water on Felspar for only $300. In '85 I rented a 2 bedroom house in La Mesa with a huge yard and garage for $600. So many memories in PB. I wrote my name in fresh cement on Mission Blvd in 1986 and it's still there! I go see it every time a visit, I still love PB and visit often , I live in LA now, I have a fantastic place in Santa Monica, which to me is PB 100 years in the future.
I lived at 842 Felspar 1990.
@@greasesicle I lived at 847 Felspar. Great one bedroom. It was $350! Loved it. That was 38 years ago. I still miss it so much. Shoulda stayed. Talk about lotsa fun.
I've been living in San Diego since the mid 1980s.
It's not even close to being as nice to what it used to be.
Just a mini Los Angeles now.
What's changed in your opinion?
You forgot some things:
Termites. Termites LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the weather in the beach communities. Both the flying ones and the underground ones. My house is a mile from Moonlight Beach. I had it inspected last week and yup, they found termites in the rafters. Now I have to pay $1000 for a spot treatment of a 18" piece of wood.
Homeless. If you are homeless mental case with addiction issues, then they head to the beach and live there. Perhaps it is the weather. Perhaps it is the saps that give them money.
RV urban campers. A notch above street homeless at RV homeless. They have old beater RV's that they park in front of your house for days on end. They dump their sewage on the streets. They tend to move around town, when they can afford a gallon a gas, and when the motor starts. They are usually pretty easy to notice because they have expired license plates, stuff hanging all over the RV, and spider webs on the wheels because they don't move. These people feel entitled to live at the beach for free. That $2M+ price tag for a home doesn't bother them. They have their home, and they are going to make the tax payers fund their oceanfront life. They tend to get violent and threaten any homeowner who reports them or asks them to leave or clean up their mess.
All your points have validity, but they are not just in the beach areas.
San Diego most every house has termites, and most neighborhoods have homeless and people living out of their vehicles.
@@Rambleon444 Yes. But termites and bums are more common near the beach.
Thanks so much! Very nice and informative video! Have a great day, Dan!
Glad it was helpful!
You're definitely right, the prices of the beach homes are ridiculously expensive. It's insane!! And I remember it was nice and sunny in San Diego and when I went to the beach it was cloudy.
I grew up in Encinitas. My parents were hippies. Beautiful memories.
I was there last year for about a month. Stayed at the Embassy Suites in La Jolla. Worked over off Balboa and Ruffin. I spend everyday after work and all day on weekends exploring the area. The weather was great and it was a fun place to visit, but I would not even consider living there. It took too much time to get anywhere and I have been in very few cities where the traffic was that bad every where. I live in the middle of the DFW metro plex and our traffic pales in comparison to the traffic there.
If you have the ability, try out the area you are looking to move to prior to actually moving there.
Yeah traffic is bad but not as bad as LA. It's a rat race in LA. I mean in San Diego you get traffic M-F but in LA you get bad traffic on every day and even on the weekends. It's ridiculous!
There's no other place I'd want to live more than by the beach in San Diego 🌊😎❤️
Great video I wish you great success!
One to add, I don't know the numbers but from my experience theft is high near almost any beach.
Good point. I guess it really depends what beach and where specifically. There are a lot of very nice areas with low crime as well. But in general you are probably correct.
It’s was my dream “to live close to ocean”, after this video and some comments here.. 😐😐I don’t have this dream anymore…
Living on the beach is free, but you have to walk too far to get to the soap kitchen.
Been there done that!! Lasted 2 months at the beach then moved to a downtown Penthouse!
What did you dislike most about living by the beach?
Hahh, rookie!
@@DanPBestLifeSD probably the traffic and parking
I was offered a job here 20 years ago and I turned it down the traffic was the saying and I used to pick up cars for Adesa in Oceanside the car dealership was all the way in Imperial Beach I actually had to drive down the beach and Skip I-5 and that can take you 3 hours so I figured look I'll meet you guys at the bar after work that's how bad the traffic was and I asked for a carry permit and they already had a bad attitude I told the cop I carry and drove more value today than you make in a year officer yeah he did not appreciate that comment very much so I went back to Vermont on unemployment but was a cheaper and a very equality life
Bs 😂😂😂 delusional
@@smanzo2850 if you live in San Diego long enough you will be coming to lose you know
Everyone parking in front of my house would drive me nuts. That said, best option to living by the beach would be getting one of them $10 million plus homes with a large plot. Unfortunately, that's only for a select few. Good for them though.
You definitely have to be OK with people parking in front of your house
Luckily San Diego’s so-called “marine layer” is nothing compared to San Francisco’s.
Yeah, but why would anybody live East of the I5? I have talked to people from out there East San Diego and they tell me insane things like it is 105 outside. Is the lower prices really worth a life of misery out in El Cajon, or whatever it is that is on the other side of the I5? It scares me to go East of the I5. I hear it is dangerous over there, it's hot, they have few bike paths. You really just about have to own a car if you are going to get around out there in the East. All seriousness, before buying near the beach you should definitely rent. Me I like the fog so that is a bonus. I do not own a car, and seldom rent a car so traffic is not an issue for me. Near the beach a car is really not a necessity, but an extravagant luxury. I never go to Costco, Walmart, Target, or to a mall to go shopping, so I don't understand the desire to be near one of those type of stores. I guess, I am seduced by the beach life and all of that hustle bustle that the rest of the world seems intent on wasting their lives pursuing seems really strange. I did it myself for a while, I bought a house in Mira Mesa, and had the whole yard and suburb thing going on, but what a waste of time. Back then we had a garage and it just collected junk. It does not make sense to spend all of your life working hard just to buy a bunch of junk that you are going to have to later haul to the landfill. Better to live in a tiny apartment in a place that is fun to live.
Fog!!!!!! VERY few sunny days!!
That's right!
Itd be nive if it was as pristine calm & beautiful like that pictute shows! Its not!
First 😀
Boom! 👏
Bill Gates or Alicia Keyes? That's an interesting duo.
Check out my video on celebrities that live in San Diego for context
I sublet a two bedroom in the same building in La Jolla where they both owned condominiums. Their section had a private elevator and black suv security 24-7. I paid $40,000 a month to live there in the less affluent section of the building. Beautiful!
You forgot to put in the people
Burn!
Do you believe your statements in this vid? I couldn’t believe what I was hearing given the locations
Yes, I'd say I believe my statements lol. What specifically are you questioning?
@@DanPBestLifeSDthe train noise and fog as reasons to not live near beach. Also, Lack of chain stores. If someone had money to afford beach areas , would they move away for those other reasons ?
Vendors vendors vendors. The City kicked the ball to the Coastal Commission. Dumb.
Another agent?
Poor baby.
Lol. Let's be honest, there is way more to love about living by the beach than hate 😎. But it's still good to know what you are in for.
