Yet another excellent, comprehensive review. I’ve worn WHOOP for over two years and have now been wearing Oura Ring 3 for about 4 months. In my experience, WHOOP is far superior at sleep staging. Oura is particularly bad at detecting SWS & REM. Here’s to hoping that the updated sleep staging algorithm is vastly improved, but I’m skeptical it’s as good as Oura claims in that one peer-reviewed journal article.
Compared to both Apple Watch and WHOOP, Oura seems to struggle with accurately detecting respiratory rate. I think that’s one of the reasons it’s so ineffective at accurately staging sleep. Hopefully, the new algorithm greatly improves this.

Great explanation and review Rob. I use my Apple Watch and an app called Training today. The app has access to my HRV and it translate that to a RTT score. I think it’s pretty accurate. When I am up I do see the last measurement was taken around 5am & around the day the app will update if I am stationary with very little movement. I also use my Garmin watch and rely on body battery as an indication of my HRV
@@TheQuantifiedScientist I think so 😉 to be fair the Apple Watch is reliable for HRV tracking and having training today work out my readiness is a plus. Hi Rob. Thanks for the video. Do you know if the oura ring released the promised features yet? I am quite excited and looking forward to a nice device with which I can track my hrv, but also o2 levels in my blood. The oura ring appeals to me, but I also feel kind of lost as to which I should go for an alternative device. Some much choice. Which would you recommend?
I hadn't realized they had finally updated the algorithm. Still far from perfect but probably at least *somewhat* useful / clearly better than chance with decent deep and awake detection. Guess I'll finally start paying attention to it again.
Do you have a video/blog/article, where you compare all the different devices side-by-side to see which on is the best for tracking sleep? Or is it just these individual reviews? Thanks!
I am looking forward to summarizing the best Smartwatch in the category of heartbeat accuracy, GPS accuracy etc. I really like your scientific tests because there is a lack of objective tests like yours.
My friend please rate and test the new Oura Gen 3 ring sleep algorithm. I think it sucks. But I'd like to see your analysis. Thanks man! I mean you are seriously promoting it in this video and yet I think it's worse than it ever was. They didn't even really change the way they perceive it I mean measure it. It just seems like they used a formula to change the math based on the HRV score. People with higher HRV scores are getting instantly more sleep and deep sleep but people that have lower HRV scores including those who are older who have normal HRV scores for their age are immediately seeing huge deficits in sleep and deep sleep. That's just total BS. They're also admitting that their former algorithm was completely wrong. And that they were basically ripping people off for the last several years if we believe that their new algorithm is true. This is why it's oh so very important for you to do another review where you test this new algorithm against other devices and your other equipment that you so well used to do so. We're really counting on you sir!
Regarding sleep stage tracking - do you believe it's only a matter of algorithms and data analysis, or is perhaps hand movement (and other sensed data by the ring) *itself* not reliable enough for sleep stage indication compared to brain activity measurements?
Did you consider swapping hands of the oura rings and do a repeated experiment? It would be really interesting to see if there are indeed differences between hands, don't you think?
Please consider to make a video for the smartwatches with smart alarm feature. Is one of the most important things that have a direct impact to your daily life. Keep it up!

Hi Rob. I’ve been watching your videos for a while, and follow your analysis with interest. The only thing holding back my decision, not just the algorithm update, is the battery longevity. How long will the battery in the ring last before it just stops holding a charge? $300 + subscription is a lot for something that may last 18-24 months maybe? What’s your opinion on the oura ring’s shall life? Thanks 🙏
What finger do you think is the best for wearing an Oura ring? I had read somewhere that pinky finger or index finger might not be as good as ring or middle finger. What do you think?
If you don’t mind me asking, are you left or right handed please? Provided you are using the same size ring on both hands, I wonder if there is any difference in data as a persons most used hand is supposed to be ever so slightly bigger than the other. Just wondered if you’ve noticed any correlations?
Hi Rob, may I ask why do you think Oura ring 3 is not better than whoop devices in Test 8 of this video? I think among the sleep tracking devices you've tested, Oura ring 3 has the best performance in terms of detecting deep sleep which I think might be the most important component of a night sleep. Thank you.
I have a question - have you since reworked the data analysis for the sleep tracking on the garmin venu 2? Because as far as I can tell, the dot in your comparison chart doesn't match any of the data given in your review of the device, and I know you changed EEG device around that time. Just, yanno, what is the method for generating the comparison chart here?
Can you do an analysis of the 'sleep as android' app? It does an estimation based on movement so probably not accurate. However you can also couple it with a HR monitor during your sleep and maybe then the accuracy is decent.
I noticed that about a month ago my REM sleep time increased significantly and has more or less stayed higher. I have been wearing an Oura ring for 3 years now and the increase REM amount was definitely a noticeable change. I was wondering if they tweaked the sleep algorithm a little bit.
Oura has a new CEO as far as I know. Could be the reason for the sudden change. Hopefully this doesn't become a new pattern. That said I have had two rings with battery issues, gotten two new rings for free with upgrades include.
Hey there, love your videos :) Just had a question : Is there a reason why the data isn't sorted by date in ascending / descending order at 15:05 ? Might have shown the nature of their algorithm (learning / static) :)

Do you have any plans for CGM testing?
Another excellent video with real numbers. I love it thanks! Which software are you using to calculate the HRV with the polar strap?
Viewing this in early September - is the new software out? And the inproved sleepmonitoring coming soon?
Looking forward to a head to head with the upcoming Circular Ring (specs seem promising and does not have a subscription model)
Which would you recommend?
love your videos have been using them to choose my tools!
Thanks!
Hi Rob, thanks for this hard work
Thanks so much Freaking Freak!
I am looking forward to summarizing the best Smartwatch in the category of heartbeat accuracy, GPS accuracy etc.
I really like your scientific tests because there is a lack of objective tests like yours.
I suggest you to retest the Huawei GT3 aganin. There were recentily a upgrade that updated the sensors. It seens to be more accurate now.
I just want to say thank you for making these videos and taking the time to promote science in this world of marketing lies.
Can't wait their new updates and of course you review for it. If they keep their promises i will definitely buy one !
As usual very nice review :)
I was pretty interested in this ring but refuse to pay for another subscription. Not truly worth it to me.
Thank you for another excellent video.
Nice Video! Looking forward to the new algorithms and your analysis :D
Hi Leo! Me too!
Excellent analysis, as always Rob! Thank you!
What smartwatch do you recommend for accurate readings of SP02 and heart rate? To be used in training!
Excellent analysis as always
Thanks Joe, these kind words always mean a lot (after a weekend of hard work on the video 😊😄 )
Keep it up!
Subscription for a consumer product? No thank you, I have commitment issues. Great analysis monsieur!
Could you do an assessment of the accuracy of the Fenix 7 for sleep tracking please?
Perfect summary, well presented to the point
Hi Rob, may I request for you to review the Xiaomi Mibro X1 smartwatch? Thank you so much! ❤️
Can you please review colorfit ultra 2 watch ?
I would like to ask if I don't pay the monthly fee, what features can't be used?
Would you recommend paying a monthly fee?
Please review ringconn smart ring if possible.
Will you ever consider measuring the same hrv data for garmin ("stress")?
Please cover the ECG features of Apple and Galaxy
Circular ring - Oura ring's rival is coming this year. Would love to hear your review about it soon :D other reviews is not as good and scientific as your
What do you think?
when is Amazfit NEO video coming out ??
Trustworthy videos. If you could suggest any budget band with high accuracy of steps and heart rate, sleep tracking is not important. Thank you. 👏
If you don’t mind me asking, are you left or right handed please?
Provided you are using the same size ring on both hands, I wonder if there is any difference in data as a persons most used hand is supposed to be ever so slightly bigger than the other. Just wondered if you’ve noticed any correlations?
Can I look at the Ring as a scale in that each one is can be different but if you use the same ring/scale then it should be consistence.
Thanks for this review, i hope to see a review of Mi band 7.
How about using both Oura rings on different fingers of the same hand? Especially if you are a side sleeper…
How about that new algorithm?
TY a lot for such a great work! I wonder why you use saint petersburg footage in your videos?:)
Eveyrthing is perfect and super interesting but on test 8 we can't see Apple Watch to compare :(
Can you do an analysis of the 'sleep as android' app? It does an estimation based on movement so probably not accurate. However you can also couple it with a HR monitor during your sleep and maybe then the accuracy is decent.
Hi Arne! That has been on my list for a long long time indeed. I need to make some time for it 😊😄
Great analysis. Great hair.
Hi Zach! Haha, thanks 💁🏼♂️
As a drummer, even though high HRV is better, I still feel shane.
Hey there, love your videos :)
Just had a question :
Is there a reason why the data isn't sorted by date in ascending / descending order at 15:05 ?
Might have shown the nature of their algorithm (learning / static) :)
Will you be testing the sleep score max? Very curious to see if it actually does what it says it does.
What about the new French company ring, the Circular ?
I got a very low HRV with the Oura 3 (I'm guessing it's correct). I only have between 13-15 ms. I work out every day, I'm 50 years old, I only have a slight overweight. This seems to be worrying?
Quiet a good looking creative thumbnail to make the rings look like spectacles
Also great informative video
Thanks Anos! Glad you enjoyed it 😊😄
please quantify blood gases devices too like capnometer, oxygen etc.. ı trust You, enjoy your channel
Was going to order one. However they have no UK supplier and it can’t be bought on Amazon. So I’d have to buy if off their international site, wait several weeks, then pay unspecified import taxes and fees. So that’s a major fail and I’ll forget the idea.
A Suunto 9 Peak review would be nice thanks:)
Bro Fitbit Inspire 3 please! 🙏🏼
Hi Rob, would you also consider testing out the step counter for the Oura Ring? Seems to always over estimate versus other trackers.
Really sad at this one - was excited to try it. The initial cost is a rip off and then you still have ongoing costs.
nice review, as always. Are there any chances that you can review Suunto7?
Hi Teo! I still need to contact Suunto to see if they will lend me some new devices they are releasing 😊😄
@@TheQuantifiedScientist thanks for the brilliant news. Keep it up, you're great
