I love the waistcoat! Our local faire in Southern California knows there’s enough pirate fans that they explicitly have a pirate day. I wore an 18th century bodice with a linen shift and linen skirt to the Faire with no concern for anachronism because the corsets they sell are…definitely not historically accurate. I love the creative anarchy of Faire dress.

Confusing term, Renaissance fair, when it's so much more than that.
Here in the Netherlands we call them fantasy fairs. It's like a convention of everything fantasy and scifi (book signings, lectures, medieval folk bands, tabletop games, jousting, storytellers, jesters, artisam, crafts, plus most guests are in costume) and it's usually held at real castle grounds (lucky to live in Europe, yes😊)

Is there one, you would particularly recommend? I've actually never been to one (or at least not to a big one) and it sounds like something, I would enjoy.
I live in Cologne, so not far at all from the Netherlands.

@@raraavis7782 my absolute favourite is Castlefest in Lisse. it's one of the biggest ones and the atmosphere is just top notch! lots of cool costumes historical, fantasy, everything. The original Renaissance Faire in Southern California was set in the English Renaissance as other faires came along they got more fantasy oriented, for example, the San Jose Renfaire and San Jose Fantasy Faire are now combined.

Thanks! I will check that out for sure.
It must be very popular - camping is already sold out 😅.
But maybe 3 days would have been a bit much anyway, so I shall get a day ticket and then seek accomodations elsewhere.
I went to Amsterdam and then spent a week in Leiden with extended family before Corona hit, so I have fond memories of the region.

I have one pirate shirt with way too thick linen from years ago. And a drag king/stage style frock coat that is crazy shiny that again was made like 5 years ago (my skills and knowledge has skyrocketed since then) and not very historical looking. Now I'm so heavily debating making myself better piraty garb. My budget is low but I have a lot of thick drapery type brocade looking fabric that would be pretty for frocks. And till I can afford linen. Thrifted soft cotton or linen sheets from my local shop make lovely shirts and chemise for casual wear.

As soon as you started talking about not wanting to carry bags I was thinking about that harness because I've seen a number of professional photographers using them at shoots and then you brought out yours which is leather and brass and beautiful. Much nicer than the nylon straps and plastic buckles of the ones I've seen. The whole outfit is awesome.

MN Ren Fest is for some reason at the end of the summer/early fall. The weather could be cool in the morning and scorching by noon. If it's rained, the entire place is mud and puddles. If it's been dry, expect to my covered in in a fine powder of dirt by the end of the day.
I've loom knitted a few shawls and use them on the morning to keep warm and then tie them around my waist when it gets warm. I don't like to carry stuff (and as an overly prepared person and mother) I tend to bring many things for which I have pouches hanging on a belt along with my corked ceramic mug and a water skin. My daughter has her own belt and pouches so she can carry her own stuff.

I love how the whole ensemble came together. Every year I say that I am going to make us waist coats etc to wear to the Vallejo Pirate Fair but every year we just throw on renowned stuff in a "piratey" fashion with tricorn hats and lots of jewelry.

my parents met at ren faire! around 30 years ago, at least at the ones my parents went to, they were still historically adequate and fantasy wasn’t really a part of it. when i was a baby my parents used to bring me along, so yes i had a very tiny elizabethan outfit. funny enough, there were actually people who took the historical accuracy TOO far and would get mad at other for not hand sewing their entire gown. they stopped going in the 2000s when it started to incorporate fantasy and got away from historical plausibility

Looks like fun! You were definitely in good company. The Renaissance Pleasure Faire in California has been going on since the 1960s, and is quite an experience. There are also Highland Games, Society for Creative Anachronism tournaments and 'wars', and other such opportunities. One of my favorites was a summer pirate-themed scavenger hunt at the beach, with history based trivia and riddles written in calligraphy. Costuming for 'all day' outdoor events requires a different level of planning...can you camp, haul water, cook, etc. in your clothing? Hats are also vital here. Isn't it amazing how heavy something can feel when you must carry it all day? That harness was a great solution. I enjoy your videos very much.

My absolute favorite place in Minnesota is our Ren Fest grounds! It’s a permanent structure that feels like a fantasy town. I’m planning on going this year, but I don’t think I’ll be in costume, which is typically pirate-esque in my case. I did learn the hard way about the importance of shoe choice a few years back when I wore a pair of boots for the first time. The sole was practically nonexistent and our faire grounds are covered in mulch! By the end of the day I had managed to completely bruise the bottoms of both feet. Lesson learned: comfort over aesthetics!!

i haven't been to a ren faire in a long long time, but they hold a special place in my heart. i tried drop spindling for the first time at a renaissance faire, going to them inspired me to make elizabethan(ish) stays for my senior project in high school, and it was my entré into sewing full garments. i hope you had an amazing time!!

I did have a great time though and was able to buy a handmade lamp and a hand framed mirror which I still use to this day. I was there in the late 70s, early 80s. It was held in a real forest, thusly the mud. I'm glad you didn't have to go through that, but it did look like you had to suffer via alot of sun on asphalt or cement? I've only been to events at castles or battlefields where one has to be authenticly dressed as a re enactor or be just a visitor. Great fun to be had helping a friend with her stall in her double Bergundian tent and seeing stalls and costumes from all over Europe at Tewksbury one year. Beautifull Polish amber and great German band. That was some years ago and everyone dressed as pirates after the event closed to the public at night because even serious living history people like to play .

Wow - amazing work as always. Hoping you (or all three of you) get to experience the NY Renaissance Faire at some point. It's quite a magical environment and a separate "world" (once you enter the gates) and feels super immersive. I think you three would love it.

You are so gifted Nicole. I just found you and I'm so impressed with your skills. You have a great voice for narration. You and your friends need to come to Michigan for our Renaissance fair in September in the shire of Holly. It's amazing! Enjoying your channel and your talent, loved the shoes, that's how you hooked me🤩👍🪡

Going to renfaires is such a magical experience!! If you're ever interested in other faires, I can't reccommend enough that you check out the Bristol renfaire in Kenosha sometime if you're able to, it's absolutely massive and a lovely experience in or out of costume. I'm glad you got to attend and have a fun time in costume, your whole squad looked excellent 🥰

I have those boots too (and in the same color), they take forever to lace up but are so comfortable!
Also love the scale of pointy ears from lil' point, medium point, to Abby's MEGA POINTY ears.

As usual Nicole "nailed it" (or maybe, trying for a sewing pun here, so be kind: "backstitched it') with the cosplay. That shoulder brace for carrying objects is perfect (I also have a delicate back in search of a kindly carrying method.)! I wonder could this brace be dup'd with other materials (thick gold or whatever fabric) so that it could be worn with other cosplay or everyday attire? Fun seeing Abby and Morgan also. I always say, you can never go wrong with pointed ears in cosplay. To badly misquote Tim Gunn: they (pointed ears) always make an outfit work.

Maryland renaissance fair comes complete with King and queen which if you keep up with the gossip they fight every year lol. It’s so fun it also happens with it’s not so hot.

I want to thank you for working with the birch mattress sponsor! I've wanted a natural bed for a long time and and a Japanese joinery bed but Thuma is too expensive, I would have never found them myself !! I'm shocked you've never gone to Ren Fair but in love with your outfit!

Lovely! Rewatching now that I have had some basic tailoring. Between you and Sewstine I’m going to have to get a pattern for both a waistcoat and a court coat. I already have a Vogue pattern to make a replacement for my “Jack Sparrow” jacket.

Waistcoat is a thing of beauty. But do you think Stede
would havev buttons in back opening area? I've seen or at least think I've seen some like that. Or am I thinking of the jacket?

We live very near the Texas Renaissance Festival and normally go two or three times a season. It's fun but expensive and the Texas heat can be brutal, even in October so i tend to wear a lot of belly dancing or fairy garb. My renfaire style is liken to Stevie Nicks meets Coachella 🤣
