First year middle school teacher here, the thing I love most about it is that I can go from yelling at a student to laughing at them because of how fun they are. They are the most difficult students but also the most rewarding. I have seen so many changes in them in one year. I can’t wait to see they grow up into amazing humans.
When I was in 5th grade during the end of the year my class got a new student. His name was Jason and he had lived in China for most of his life, he knew little English. Then one day during lunch he was eating and choked. The lunch supervisors did’t notice until a student had told them. None of the supervisors were trained for anything like that. One of the teachers saw and went to go get the nurse. One supervisor tried, but turned out to hurt him. Then one of our janitors, Ms.Betty, noticed and came running and she stoped Jason form choking before the nurse could even get out of the office. Everyone clapped for Ms.Betty, the janitor. I couldn’t eat for the rest of lunch.
I tried middle school and it wasn’t for me. More power to all of you because middle school is not for the faint of heart.
This has to be the best panel combo yet! But yeah the number 69 needs to be abolished from textbooks. Also no cleaning the classroom? WTF??? My teachers in Middle School never used it as a punishment it was always just "Hey if you want to help you can, but if you need to say study for another class/read a book etc. it's the end of the year- absolutely okay!" If I ever got that notice, I'd immediately say "Okay, I won't ask my kids to help me clean the classroom- I'll just have my poor 75 year old Father and 70 year old mother come in and help me on the weekend."
For real. I saw some elementary kids having so much fun helping their teacher this week to move next door.
I taught in the same middle school for 42 years. Left due to administration. I have been teaching high school for the past two years. Miss some parts but not the administration.
I understand. I left my elementary school due to administration. I absolutely luv where I am now.
God bless you. At 42 years in service I’d want to retire lol. I’m a school counselor and admin makes all the difference!
I wasn't ready to retire, just ready to be away from the administration. I love my new school.
How rude! If I left due to age, why did I go to high school where it is more demanding?
25:06 I keep a “happy folder” with notes or cards from my students or their parents. When I have a bad day it’s nice to look at them & remember why I do this.
I went from being an engineer for 30 years to teaching 8th grade math and Algebra. What a blast! I've never laughed so much in my life. I will never forget pulling out the acrylic 3D shapes with the 2D nets inside. We were on the topic of cylinders so I proceeded to pull that one out of the box and deconstruct it with the included net. As I held it up I had no idea why the class was just laughing and talking about everything other than math. When I looked at the net it resembled a weiner and beans! Come to find out, the manufacturer updated the model in future versions to put the two circles on either end of the rectangle. What a nice prank for a new teacher.... give him the model with the weiner and beans!
My favorite thing is watching those kids who may struggle with self esteem, become so much more comfortable and confident with themselves by the end of the year.
Bree summed up my love for middle school so well. And, she is so right; once your students understand you and where the lines are, they self police.
Middle school is the best grade / ages to teach because you can have fun , you have best ( and crazy conversations) and you can just be real !
I decided when I was in middle school 17 years ago that I would homeschool my kids for middle school because it was so ridiculously bad… but you guys make me almost reconsider how terrible that age is 🤣
Kindergarten vs Middle school teacher rumble! Would love to see that Tik Tok!
Yes! The nasty smelling body sprays/cologne...ew. I told one of my 7th graders last week that I would rather smell their natural stank. He just looked...skeptical.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂! Yes 🙌 MS educator here, and I would much rather smell musty over musty and Axe 😭😰🤢🤮
My 4-6 graders have just as much drama. I finally accepted that some kids will like me, and others won’t. And they can be mean and honest..but yes, the ones we can make a difference with matters.
My daughter was in 6th grade this year, and the things she would tell me ! They are absolutely vicious to each other. Not ready for 7th grade😬
23:29 As someone who lives down south, i've seen too many people have the same exact reaction to buccees, and it will NEVER get old
OMG YES!!! I love them!! Please keep them on for so long!!! I LOVE THEM
As a single mom to a middle schooler, whose house is the neighborhood hang out for many middle schoolers, it made my heart happy to hear how joyful it made yall to be teachers for this age! Cuz man they are crazy!
What a fantastic podcast! I'm so excited to binge more of this!
I majored in technical theatre in college, and lighting was my emphasis. Here is my visual critique, though I fully get that none of this may matter to anyone else but me.
I'd like to be able to see Bri Richardson better. She is significantly harder to see because of the dark background coupled with her dark shirt and dark skin tone.
Everything about the audio was terrific. Specifically, the stories are interesting AND the voices themselves are also interesting.
Everyone has clear and dynamic voices, not monotone or mumbly. While still preserving each individual's personal speech style, accent, etc. No one is talking over each other, all take turns, and laugh or commiserate on the crazy similarities, etc. It is phenomenal!
If a person is only listening, it is always clear that there are 3 people and no one's voice is so similar that listener is wondering who is talking during the episode.
That is really important to me when listening without being able to watch.
This was so enjoyable and I laughed and learned so much! Thank you for providing laughs, smiles and loads of insight!
Middle schoolers! Random, impetuous and so much fun! No longer little kids and not yet inhibited. My fave, forever!
My niece just finished her 7th grade year!!!! and watching her go thru it and seeing her have so much drama and listening to it!!!! I just tell her you will make it thru
These three are my favorite! And I love that they are talking about the life that I live!
Mrs. Richardson is a whole vibe. I had a few teachers like her, and I thought they were the best.
Just wanted to thank all you teachers out there and to tell you how much I admire you. Gotta have a good sense of humor.
Art teacher. Older boys drawing special parts on their snowmen. I told them that I was glad their snowmen were happy, but maybe in a public setting we should erase that part. They literally fell out of their seats laughing so hard. I couldn't do that with elementary. This was a hard group of boys for the school. I didn't have one problem with them after that.
This was awesome!! I love Bree but was so awesome to see Gabe back again
This year will be my 45th year teaching and 40 of those have been in middle school and ILOVE IT! You guys are so spot on. I have tickets to see you in November in Peoria, IL! Can’t wait!
This is the best episode ! I’m a middle school ELA teacher for 8 years ….
Yes, Baton Rouge is French means “Red Stick”. Yall are cracking me up. I am a 7th grade US History teacher and I am saving this for my class. I always show them videos of people answering questions about our country and not knowing the answers. Hahahaha! Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana. Technically, I guess this is a spelling question , so I’ll give you this one. But my kids have to know how to spell the names. I do love your show! Thanks for always giving me a good laugh. I can always relate and then I have to send your videos to my teacher besties on our private chat!
I have been subbing for a few months now, and I always pictured myself teaching high school because of the subject I’m looking to teach (theater and/or English). I have to say though that Briana’s words about the middle school kids compared to high schoolers resonated soooo much with me. I have SO much fun subbing for middle school. At my favorite schools, they see me coming in in the morning in the halls and excitedly say “Hi Ms. Taylor!!” and ask where I’m going to be that day 😭😭 I definitely get bored with high schoolers as well because for the most part, they are quiet and do their own thing. I have to imagine it would be different if I wasn’t subbing and had the chance to build a relationship with all of them, but I’m so torn!
I teach 5th which is basically middle school, especially when they come back from Christmas break. They are awful and funny at the same time! They have unmasked my adhd! I had to learn how to let go and laugh too!
That’s what I always say. 5th is like middle school in one classroom. There is all the drama, puberty, social media obsession, etc.
This reminds me of when I teach beginning strings in middle school, and I have to teach the parts of the instrument…. And the “nut” … without fail is always funny to them.
My two youngest grandkids are in MS this year. They are so fun, so funny and still so sweet! They come up with stuff that catches me off guard with their maturity while being such young kids. Here’s to Dominick and Gabriella!!💕
SD kid here - now been driving 10 years - great benefits here & definitely makes us more responsible than you think!! Well most kids..
Blessings to y'all for teaching middle school. I teach the big middle schoolers of high school, 9th grade. But I think for the same reasons y'all give is why I like teaching freshmen. They become too cool for school after that.
As a substitute teacher I sub at 6 different school districts and 2 of them request my keys. They won't allow me a key to the classroom without me handing over my keys. I would never leave early, unless there is an emergency of course, no matter how bad the day goes. Both school districts know that about me and one forgot, several times, to take my keys until I was holding my keys out to them.
Love the podcast! Keep it up!
In middle school, we had major and minor elective classes like art, music, and physical education. Example: Mon, Wed, Fri were the major and Tues, Thurs was our minor days
I worked 27 years as a special education Para in middle school only. Loved it every day
19:50 "Condolences to your puppy" took me out! 🤣🤣🤣
I remember loving going to school and help cleaning the classroom. The teachers created a table of lost and found and sometimes they would just put items she/he didn’t want and we got to pick out what we wanted. I got some flower vases and a wooden snake 😅
This episode was my favorite so far. They are all good but this one…. These three are hilarious. Loved teaching middle school.
For our middle school science fair we do not have a project numbered as 69 since the first year we did this (like 3 years ago) this is the project that won the student votes. 🙄
One of the coolest things my school district did was to have us in the 8th grade write ourselves a letter, that then got returned to us at high school graduation. I was really surprised that the letter was taken care of all that time. I was not anticipating that letter on graduation day. I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I opened it. It was really cool to read my 8th grade self, at high school graduation
Middle School for life!
Should we tell them about pen15? Lmaooooo thats was the rage in 2009-2011
I am an elementary teacher who taught middle school for one year, 7th grade Language Arts. I had taught 6th once in an elementary school setting. It was a different world. I liked most of colleagues, but not admin( my Dept. Chair was the VP's little sister...BIG Nepo baby) and not most of the kids. They were violent.
Instructionally, I was strong coming from elementary school. The students were below grade level. Middle school teacher were used to teaching who could read to learn. They were used to having to teach phonics to adolescents. The previous year, I had taught kindergarten ( for the first time). I knew how to teach students who couldn't read yet. I knew how to conduct running records to assess them. Once my principal saw that I was making gains, my Literacy Coach and even VIPs from the district who observed me often, supported me. THEN, they left me alone the second half of the year. The next year, I taught an intermediate grade in a K-8th academy. That fit me much better.😊
oh trust me, elementary students do understand sarcasm, usually its your 4th and 5th graders that get it pretty good, they did back when i was in elementary school in the late 80s and early 90s.
I loved Teachers off Duty !!!!! My faves !!! ❤
Yup!! Middle school math teacher here, LOVE IT!!!! 😂😂😂😂
Yes, use that peer pressure
I’m a 16y high school teacher. Many of my kids act like middle schoolers, usually freshmen, some juniors, grabbing each others things and running around, like they have never been in a physical school before. Doesn’t help that this year we had freshmen who hadn’t been in a classroom since before COVID. I tell them when they tattle on that behavior that “I’m not a middle school teacher. Y’all need to grow up faster.” So done with that behavior.
“You know mutt… condolences to yo puppy.”😭
I teach middle school math (6-8). I am a teacher with high expectations for my students, but you all gave me some examples of how I can articulate them better to my middle school students. Thank you!!!
Food is a great TEACHER motivator too
Same! I was very ornery in MS and my dad was on the school board. Basketball and sports probably saved me from being a very bad kid at times! I knew I wanted to keep playing sports so that was motivational. I teach MS/HS now.😂
The “last clap game” was so fun ngl
Oh That’s why they were singing that! 😂
I never really understood why people would say "I can see that" when I tell them I teach middle school. Now I realize it after realizing how chaotic I am with them. I was also someone that only wanted to teach high school and tried middle school, now I never want to go to high school! I also hate that Uranus is also my favorite planet and the kids ROAST me for it.. Also the fear of a student reading the word "organism" out loud..
I checked, I am working August 1. I can't come and that is the ONLY one I could possibly attend! You need to book shows in states closer to MS, because that is where I live. I worked 8 years in teaching. I taught 3rd, 4th. 5th, 6th, 2nd and 1st grade. Cut a lady in bit of slack and perform somewhere I can see you! PLEASE!
Middle School math teacher here...the 69 thing...OMG!
One of the best things about teaching in my school, besides the kids, is that we are on a middle school model, not a junior high model, so we are broken down into groups of 4 teachers (major content areas) that are responsible for 70-80 kids for the whole year. We really get to know our students and can collaborate lessons and strategies to fit each group of kids, each year.
And yes, we are JUST LIKE OUR KIDS!!! :)
Thanks!
I teach art classes, all ages. All ages have their perks, but I don't think I laugh more in class than I do with my middle schoolers. All of this is so spot on! I totally agree with the recess as well, I teach in an afterschool program specifically, and most only get gym once or twice a week and it breaks my heart that they are stuck in a studio after 8 hours of school. They are such good sports about it all and really want to be in art class so that makes it better but it's really a bummer when they need that movement and we can't truly accommodate because of the safety issues in art studios (too many sharp objects, things on the floor, and delicate artworks).
Dating myself here. When I was in middle school, the big things were Bruce Lee, The Jackson Five snd The Osmonds. Little girls were either team Michael or team Donny.
Short out to baton rouge louisiana
I come from a family line of military and teachers. I worked warehousing management and logistics for 14 years and when my youngest started school, I thought about teaching-for a year, it took me over a year to jump in. It was a hard sign bc my mom taught Special Ed for 30 years and retired early bc her admin sucked. Anyway, I committed to subbing in February bc I have commitment issues. I picked up a long term 6th grade ELA right after Spring Break...🤣🤣🤣😅. I am their 5th teacher this year if that tells you anything about this group. Admin is casually dropping the licensing route since I have a bachelors but I'm not ready for that commitment but I would love to teach this class in this school next year. The kids are crazy, everyday my teachers in the hall are like wtf, there's something wrong with them. I agree but those teachers are so amazing, we are all on the same page and THEY are why I'd come back!
I’m so scared about my son going to middle school. I’ve considered homeschooling or private school just because of how traumatized I was from middle school. It all snow balled and almost ruined my life (literally) so now I’m terrified of letting the same happen to my kid. Idk if this is tmi but since there are lots of teachers here I’d love advice from yall specifically. He’s about to start fifth grade, he’s very sweet but spacey and is way too interested in girls. Idek what to do yall lol he’s my only baby and I’m definitely over thinking this but I can’t stop.
I was scared too when my middle child went to middle school bc he's my sensitive one. Very sensitive and ....... Fast forward, he's a rising 9th grader and everything is fine. Give it a chance. Your feelings are valid. I started teaching 6th grade long term at his school after Spring Break and there are a lot of sensitive students but they find people like them and it's good for them. Trust me, my friend group and I make jokes about what we will do if someone bullies our kids. Thus far we ain't set nobody's block ablaze!
I always laminate their notes. I also let them sign my yearbook.
THEY ARE hilarious
I’m in 7th grade and I friend has made multiple websites with games that the school blocked and every time they block the website he finds a new way to do it
1st year teaching middle school, I love my 8th graders they have a laugh when I clap back on their attempts to make fun of something I did or wear. I truly gave them their thanks when due, cause they knew when admin were around, they had to keep it cool. We also had our days of being just silly. And when we had to be serious, and get work done. The kids were the ones that made my first year enjoyable. the one thing I do not enjoy when it came to the kids, having to walk them to everything, bathroom, lunch, connections, like everything, then having to rush in a bathroom break before having to sit in a meeting or something. to at on top of that. It's the adults that just have me not enjoy middle school at all. Don't get me wrong there are the few that welcomed me with open arms and been an extreme help to me in my first year. Others, just ..... ugh. Right now I am ready to go back to High School! but 2 more years to do middle school, who knows something may change.
I just graduated high school this past school year, and middle school was awful. To what Gabe was saying about recognizing when a kid was actually mean, I was the kid who was the target of most of those comments. I had a suicide plan in 7th grade and was seriously going to follow through. I was
12. I’m 18 now, but man do those words really hurt. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me is a lie. Words hurt worse.
So true.
I’m cracking up because I teach 5th and they do ALL those tik tok references and act just like you guys were describing. 😂😂😂
Having worked as a secretary and paraprofessional in PreK, elementary, middle and high schools, I find that teachers are definitely cut out to teach at whichever level they are at. Move a middle school teacher to elementary and they are not happy! Middle school was my least favorite!!BTW, Baton Rouge literally means red stick in French!!
Y'all are my tribe. Middle school is absolutely my jam (8th grade spec ed science). I love the bonds you build with your kids, the random comments that you can't help but laugh at, that one student who will jump from the floor to the top of the science table in one jump and then serenade the class with the latest song complete with improvised microphone, but most of all I love the growth, and that I get to be a part of it.
I'm so glad i work with middle schoolers. I swear they're all friends now because of stuff like HSM, and I love them for it. They really are awesome. Some of the best people i've met.
They just played HSM late night on cable last night and I was wondering the whole time if kids still resonate with it.
@@hayleyhellbound9513 I know an elementary class who watched it the other day so I think so. It definitely helped my generation break the group mentality.
I’m starting college in the fall to be a preschool teacher but might end up switching to middle school
I have been teaching pre-K for 20ish years and one of my teacher besties is a middle school ELA/Guidance teacher. I’ve subbed in all grades up through middle school and I have to tell you- middle school students and pre-K students are basically the same! 😆
Very similar behavioral issues, random noises, spilling tea, being brutally honestly (your hair looks weird like that, I don’t like it that short and why did you make it “red”!?), fighting over dumb things (“yes, tornados are real” “no they aren’t!” Or “that’s my seat! I was sitting there yesterday!”, “bribing” with special snacks 😆
I never thought I would ever be willing to teach middle school but between subbing and having a 14-year-old, I might be able to do it. Honestly, I think it’s the parents that would kill me though 🤦♀️
Wish me luck as I start my journey with 8th Grade English Language Arts in the fall...
The 7th grade classroom is like a bag trail mix. Some are sweet, some are salty, and they're all a bit nutty!
As a 7th grader going to 8th this year I would love to have y'all as my teachers
Taught middle school ( highschool Australia) for 15 years.
My worst advice I ever received;
I've got to rule the kid's before they tear me apart!🥺
Fact is after laying down the rules for my class, the incredible students know what to do and they did it, and there's always time for question time, there was moments!!!!
That's the grade I wanted to teach English and history middle school but epilepsy stopped that
Bri, do you have a twin sister that's also a teacher or was a teacher? I've been watching your videos forever, as a fellow teacher & love every single one!
21:06 are you kidding?? in my high school we'd always cut up with the teachers and staff, they'd cut up with us during breaks, before or after school, a lot of them were fun, you know, if everybody finished up most or all their work, and there's a few minutes left before bell, or class change -, yeah they shoot the breeze with us, wed joke and roast in high school.
I brought the windex from home to clean the white board on the last day of school.
Minnesota woooo!
My twins are going into 6th grade next year. 😬🤣 They dont even know why 69 is funny yet! They just think its funny.
My favorite thing about middle schoolers is sometimes they do stuff that doesn't make sense, but it's funny. Like "you poor thing".
As a gal who's going into 7th grade next schoolyear, i am honestly baffled tbh that the teachers put up with us kids. I'm not suprised that they seem to have 3 cups of coffee a day, we're probably energy-draining asf.
I have taught for the last 8 years 2 year in sped (11 to 22 year olds moderate to severe autism )and 6 In preschool (2 in infants and Todd’s and 4 in 2s plus) but the hardest children o have taught are my threenagers. And terrible twos but at I love them. How ever I worry for some of their parents when they become actual teenagers.
Yall just have to be in MT during the ND state fair… 😭
Hello guys, this happened to be the first episode I watch of your show.
I am a new teacher and I was looking for videos/ shows on UA-cam of teachers talking about their teaching stories and experiences, thank you so much for the entertainment.
I have a question to ask you:
- Will In-class teaching experience be the same as online teaching? [because I only teach online and I want to try in-class but I'm afraid I may hate it.] Do you think I won't regret giving it a shot?
I haaaaaaattttttttteeeeeeeeeddddddd the lebron james/sunshine thing!!!!!
I teach 5th Grade and our students only have PE once a week😭
Are class pet is a hair tie on the ceiling on the tech ed room the teacher told us that a girl flung it up there and it got stuck up there
Teaching middle school robotics, trying to talk about drive shafts and screws causes mass chaos. The boys can't stop laughing/giggling and the girls are embarrased.
lmao im 43 and im still chuckling a little :-)
