Excellent video. I cut the stems leaving only one leaf on each stem(the bottom leaf of each stem, even if the stem has not flowered). You are the first person that I have ever seen who recommends cutting the peony stems after they finish blooming in spring. With this strategy, my plants do not become very bushy and they give fewer but stronger stems the next year which always give some very large and beautiful flowers.

Thank you for watching the video and messaging me.
Like you, I find that by cutting the flowering stems back that the plant consistently flowers year after year, and that the flowering stems are strong.
Such a great flower to look at isn’t it.

Yes.Such beautiful flowers they are that they play with my senses and I can't imagine they are so beautiful. I leave one leaf on each stem if the plant is old and if that single leaf is destroyed, for some reason, it does not harm the plant irreparably. On the plants that are new and have only two or three stems, I leave 2 leaves on each stem just in case something happens to one of the leaves on the stem. I always get flowers and the plant does not get very bushy and I also don't have to wait many years to get flowers on a new plant. I always buy potted peonies if I want to plant more in the garden and I cut each stem and leave just 1 leaf on each stem and many times I get flowers the next year. I am now an expert on peonies ...ha ha...I also cut the buds when the are just opening and put them in the fridge and when I have a good collection and a warm day in the house I arrange them in the most spectacular flower arrangement. That way the buds are better off in the fridge while the rain beats the peonies down on a rainy day. I call peonies "rain flowers " because when they start opening the rain magically beats them down to the ground...ha ha...

Great tips - what should I do with really bad powdery mildew on peony? Spray, cut back now or just wait until the autumn?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  Рік тому

Hi. Many thanks for watching and sending a message.
With regards to powdery mildew it’s something that thankfully mine don’t tend to get. The most common reason for getting the fungal disease is due to erratic watering and / or overhead watering. I always try to water to the base of my plants rather than over all the foliage. Watering in the morning will also greatly reduce the incidence as the leaves can also dry throughout the day.
Treatment wise. Cutting back the excess leaves, as per this video, will help as it allows more air circulation.
More consistent watering will also help.
Ultimately though the only real cure is through chemical spray and so that depends on how bothered you are by the white mould.
I try to boost plant health by applying seaweed extract and ensure sufficient watering, to see if the plant can growth through the fungal attack first.
All the best and enjoy your gardening 🌸

I got some peonies Rhisomes from Costco in the U.S. , I planted them and they grew some stems about 4 -6 " tall, but then they withered and died. One of the was cut off by what might be a cut worm...
    QUESTION: Will they grow back?

Hi. Thanks for watching the video and the message.
Given your description then I would say that likely the peony most likely died from Peony Wilt which is a fungal disease. As it was a newly purchased plant then I would suspect that the rhizome was already infected and only showed symptoms once it started to try to grow.
In the U.K. we have cut worms which are basically a collection of different caterpillar species, all that feed on plant stems. Unless you have lots of them in the garden already then the odd one or two wouldn’t cause sufficient damage to the plant to kill it, as they only feed on the stems and not roots.
I would suggest lifting the plant and inspecting the rhizome. If the rhizome is still firm with signs of new shoots or roots than I would suggest planting it into a pot so that it can establish itself before planting out again.
If the rhizome is showing signs of rot, has gone blackened, developed sunken areas or generally more limp then throw it away.
In either instance it’s probably worth lightly digging the area of garden in which it was planted so as to check for caterpillars and also determine if the ground drains well following watering.
I hope this helps you. All the best 🌸🌼

hi, do you know what variety are your ponies? When I bought mine online years ago, I thought it was Sarah Burnhardt but it is like yours. it is rather fuchsia, deep pink colour than pale pink.

Hi. Many thanks for watching and the question.
The peony in this video is called ‘Karl Rosenfield’. It often produces a mixture of double and semi-double flowers that start as a deep magenta pink and fade down to pale pink.
Sarah Bernhardt is more salmon pink in colour.
Peonies have such amazing flowers but I can guarantee as soon as they pop out then the rain will come to spoil the flowers!!
      Enjoy your garden colour 🌸

Did you plant them from pre pack tubers or as plants?
Plants would most likely flower next year, pre pack tubers take another couple.

The key to get them to flower quicker is to plant so that the tops of the rhizome are just beneath the soil surface, like with iris’. Plenty of feed too.

So sad about your beautiful peonies; mine were huge buds waiting to open & then it rained & rained & they developed bud blast - I think that’s what it’s called when the buds suddenly go mushy. I could have wept as the plant looks so healthy; the leaves are fresh & green with no trace of root rot, just no chance of flowers any more. 😭😭 When is the best time to repot the tubers & what do you do with yours over winter? I’ve always put the pot in a sheltered position wrapped in fleece outdoors all winter; is this wrong?

Penny, only just seen this message of yours. Sorry for not replying sooner.
If you lift and divide then you can either re plant straight away or pot into pots. In pots they are fine just to leave as they are as they are perfectly tough.

I call them "rain flowers". As soon as they open the rain beats them down to the ground. That is why it is always good to cut them and bring them indoors before the rain spoils their unbelievable beauty.

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  2 роки тому +2

@@chandnikumarov4459. Ha ha. Yes the rain certainly does cause them some issues.
If you add some sort of support to the lower section of the plant then you shouldn’t have that problem. Well, maybe not!!

    • @chandnikumarov4459

You have to cut the buds when they just start to open and bring them indoors. For some reason we always magically get pouring rain when it is a warm day and the flowers fully open outdoors.

@@chandnikumarov4459. Yea it does feel as though it rains or gets windy as soon as the flowers open. They do make an excellent cut flower though, as you say.
