Hi thanks for the vid it was very useful.I have successfully changed my core plugs after the second attempt. There are a couple of things I would add in case this helps the next person. I hit the original core plugs on the side lip with a flat head screw driver and they easily spun round and I pulled them out with pliers. Didn't have to do any of that "punch a hole" business thankfully. I cleaned the holes thoroughly and used sealant but they leaked almost immediately. In attempting to take the second plugs out they fell into the engine, but it wasn't a big deal, I grabbed them with long nose pliers, spun them round and pulled them out with grips. cleaned the hole again and smoothed it with the finest wet and dry paper I had & let it all dry. Next time I used loctite 638 retaining compound (which was recommended by the ebay seller I bought the plugs from). I used it on the holes and on the plugs themselves generously. Banged them in and left for 24 hours. This time no leaks. Also I found my 18mm socket was too big to sit inside the plug when banging it in, so i used a spark plug socket and it was perfect. That's great -if it works- but has a risk of a gouge/ scratch in the bore which could cause the new plug to not properly seal off > new leak.
What size are the core plugs you replaced?
Hello, I’ve been getting large amounts of water into the spark plug well as well as having a coolant leak which I’m unable to find. I’m wondering wether it’s possible for coolant to travel into this area some how at all?

garage just charged me £350 for a full service and core plugs changed on a 2006 Ford Fiesta 1.25 Petrol, defo gonna be looking into doing this type of stuff myself.

All Things Jim, what a great Video my friend,i'm having the same problem at the moment, Ford Focus 1.6 petrol, I have already change gasket, plugs, leads, & coil pack, to find it still misfiring, had know idea where the water / damp was coming from ! had no idea it could be core plugs, it seems to be more 3 - 4 chambers than 1 - 2 they seem pretty dry, I've also noticed a big increase in petrol usage, would the water case this?? thanks again for a great Video !
Thankyou! Yeah sometimes one can leak and not the other, and as far as petrol usage it may well increase with your misfire due to the ecu probably over fueling it to try compensate for the rough running , thanks for watching and commenting👍

Just a quick update to my previous comment below. I've just done this job again on a new fiesta i bought.
When draining the coolant...( I'm a senior guy and getting underneath cars is not something i can do these days).
For easier access you can remove the Off Side head lamp (It's only 3 screws !) and gain access to the bottom expansion tank hose. Unclip it and drain the coolant from there.
Use some kitchen foil to make a ramp... Square piece about 10 inches each side then folded in two for strength.
Place underneath the expansion tank bottom outlet and place a plastic jug in the space below, where the headlamp was...and slowly undo the hose. Once the jug is full, empty it into a container and repeat. (You can re-use the coolant, if it's in okay condition.)
Drain the expansion tank and then tip the connecting hose downwards to drain any that is left in the pipe.
I found this to be way easier than getting underneath the car.
Once you gain access to the Core Plugs, use a screwdriver and hammer and gently tap a hole into the core plug. Then try and remove as much of the 'Inner' core plug as possible (long nose plyres work great here ). leaving the 'Ring' of the core plug intact.
Then get an old rag and with a screwdriver, push the rag through the core plug ring as much as you can.
You can then tap the 'Ring' on one side until it is free and with the rag in place, it wont drop into the engine.!
Gently pull the rag away... and with it, the old core plug.
Then follow Jims excellent guide here to finish.
Could this cause white smoke from exhaust? Haven't noticed any coolant loss but car isn't driven

@Adam Clarke if you go to fords they will only sell it you with the cover itself however any good car parts shop should sell it, if not type " ford focus 1.6 zetec rocker cover gasket "into ebay and they are around £17
@Adam Clarke oh and if the oil is on the outside of the spark plugs then yes this gasket is probably your problem

Men my truck 2010 expedition 5.4 3v froze this winter seals from behind timing cover blow out I order a Freeze plug kit installed the blown seals but now I have BLOWN SEALS IN CYLINDER HEAD THEY ARE OUTSIDE ON TOP NEXT TO MANIFOLD STUDS ANY IDEA WHATS THE MM ON THEM I CANT FIND ANY INFO ON IT OR EVEN THE PLUGS ANYONE PLS HELP THEY ARE NOT THE 14mm that comes in the package those are for the oil Gallys

Thanks! No your not going to send debris into anywhere important unless you literally smash pieces off them!, ive done this repair hundreds of times this way without any problems 👍

No, if you try as soon as you knock it out your coolant will pour out the hole into the spark plug wells 👍

could u advise me. my car has the same problem brought it to a garage, and they didn't change the core plugs they put a bolt screw in the hole near the spark plug. now my system engine lights on. what is that hole for? and has this cause more problem if I remove it?
Hi Jim, I ran a test on my Ford Fiesta 1.4 Duratec and It told me that P0304 misfiring, the car idle roughly and whenever I come across a steep, the engine light pops up. What could be the cause of the misfiring?
Hi there , the fault code p0304 if I remember correctly relates to a cylinder 4 misfire , when have you last had spark plugs? First id probably remove the spark plugs and see what condition they are in, if the porcelyn is cracked etc , if they all end up being fine you need to start looking at the ht leads, coil pack etc to see if its getting a strong enough spark before going further. Hi Jim! I would like to ask what is that hole between the 2-nd and third spark plugs at 4:15 min. I think on my engine the water comes from that? Can i replace it? Is it like a plug as well like other core plugs but smaller. Thank you in advance

Can anyone tell me whats the threaded hole which is not covered with nothing, there are 4 for spark plugs, and 2 core plugs, but there is one more which is left untouched

Thats not a silly question aha, the head is used on a few different models of ford and some have a knock sensor which would be fitted there 👍

Because its not the highest point of the engine and water likes to find the easy way out, ive seen someone fill that area with antifreeze before because they didnt drain first so ive always drained it to save a headache aha, and sorry I cant remember the exact size. @@ALLTHINGSJIM Thanks for the reply Jim. Iv'e just done this job, Your bang right about having to fully drain the coolant, i only partially drained it and after a slight tap with a hammer and screwdriver on the core plug i ended up with the spark plug wells filled with coolant. Ahh !!...
I managed to undo the Cam Belt cover screws without having to remove the expansion tank.! Nimble fingers and a small ratchet i guess.!
The old core plugs had worn almost all the way round the bottom rim, one small tap and the bottom of the core plug almost fell away and into the engine!!... It's a 14 year old car so i guess they have lasted long enough.(I got my new ones on eBay from 'Engine Core Plugs' and they were a perfect fit.)

(Edited to add...I have read on the Ford forums that the Washer Jets on some models actually leak rain water into the engine bay and down into the spark plug wells.!! Might be worth checking that this isn't the problem before suspecting the Core Plugs.!)

Thanks, what model car? Normally they are around near the inlet manifold area, I havent done one in years though so cant say 100%....
on the 1.8 focus I think the PCV valve is hidden behind the oil separator at the lower left corner of the engine, behind the inlet manifold which involves removing the inlet manifold which can be a pain in the backside if I remember right...

I done Head gasket and engine plugs 20k miles ago so touch wood it hasn't leaked oil again.

Core plugs themselves wont but the effect of them leaking will, the water damages the sparkplugs, ht leads and coil pack if left long enough 👍

I can now tell you that a 25mm welch plug is a very very tight fit so probably the next size down whether metric or imperial size. Hope that helps everyone..

One question: have you used any silicone or some glue before instaling new core plugs?
I do yes, you can get away sometimes without using some (the ford procedure doesnt tell you to use some) but 50/50 chance of it leaking again if the first ones were bad so I just use silicone on them everytime now and havent had any problems with leaks etc..

The stuff I use is a red sort I get when building engines - like atv sealent but its 147 quid a tube!!! Normal high temp / oil resistant gasket silicon would work fine though 👍

Thanks, I think the only video that truely helped me. Im in the process of doing my rocker cover gasket and plugs. What would you say is the best way to clean the rust and corrosion by the core plugs?
Herman Roos thanks, if your not changing them then i would leave the rust alone, sometimes cleaning them when they're not leaking can make them leak, if your changing them thou i would do it with a wire wheel on a drill and do it before removing them 👍
thanks, i got them removed and replaced them also replaced rocker cover gasket, spark plugs, engine oil and oil filter. how ever i noticed that the core plug on the right is leaking ever so slightly. so if i where to take off rocker cover now would i need to get a new gasket? I've driven about 10 miles.
Herman Roos no youll be fine to reuse the rocker gasket, if its been replaced and still leaking ever so slightly try remove it (without damaging it) and put some sealent around the core plug and put it back in 👍

Herman Roos bump from suspension area? Youd need to give it a look to tell where thats from, a good place to start though is your front anti-roll bar link arms, give the roll bar a tug each side up and down and see if it bangs if it does replace the side where the bars knocking. Worth a look sorry i cant help much further (without physically looking)
I'm struggling to remove the core plugs. Punched a hole into one but trying to get the plug free/out is become an absolute nightmare. Any tips to get the thing removed would be a great help
Try to Get a punch or flathead screwdriver and hit one of the edges down so the plug will go down abit and then you can spin them and pull them out with some grips
ALL THINGS JIM I've tried that but it just keeps making its way down further.. if the worst was to happen and the plug drops, what kind of job is it to remove from there.

James Mills ive never had one actually fall in, and i expect it would be a head removal if that happens, when i say edge i mean the very edge/ ridge as in not the dipped un part of the plug, if that makes sense it will drop abit but then should spin
ALL THINGS JIM finally got the plug out. Obviously I'm changing sparks, coil pack and ignition leads for new ones, if the misfire problem dosent clear are they any other parts to change to clear it or could it be more of a problem than just water getting into the spark chamber

James Mills i couldnt say without looking at it to be honest, obviously youd need to check the basics. Is it getting a spark, fuel supply and air suppy etc sorry i cant be more help
why would you want to drain the coolant? If I may ask? Is it because it stays in the spark plug galley?
zerglin87 - because if you dont your sparkplug galleys will fill up with the coolant in your system as they are at a lower point than your expansion tank !
true that, im going through the same issue, but my friend washed my motor and i think its from that. I have the 2.0L SVT motor
zerglin87 ah ok, i see what your saying but from experience unless hes pulled up a ht lead or just poured bucket after bucket of water on your rocker cover ive never seen it fill from washing the motor, there was an old recall donkeys years ago where the windscreen washer jets leaked and filled up the rocker cover recess apparently but again ive never came across that being the actual reason. Plus look around your core plugs if they are rusty you can bet its them leaking , also if you want to be super sure use an antifreeze tester and suck some up into it (they cost about a fiver) if its not antifreeze all the floats will read zero!

You have Skype or something so I can conteact you, seems the galley closest to the timing belt has water but the one furthest doesn't except piston 4
